“oledb32x.dll is missing.” If Windows reports that oledb32x.dll was not found, cannot be loaded, or contains an error, repair the old application that requested it before replacing any DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what happened:
- The error appeared after installing, uninstalling, or updating an old program: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The program is a Visual Basic 6 or legacy database application: install its documented prerequisite or compatibility update from the application vendor.
- Windows Security shows the file was quarantined: inspect Protection history and restore it only when its origin is trusted.
- Several Windows components or applications are failing: run DISM and SFC.
- The file exists but the program still will not start: check whether the error names a different DLL, such as
oledb32.dll, or indicates a dependency or architecture problem. - You are considering a DLL download or
regsvr32: stop and identify the original installer first. Neither is a reliable general repair.
What oledb32x.dll is
oledb32x.dll is a genuine Microsoft legacy data-access component. Microsoft identifies it in its Visual Basic 6 support documentation as a runtime file that is no longer supported as-is, while compatible updates or upgrades may be available. The VB6 IDE itself was 32-bit and was never provided as a native 64-bit IDE. See Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 support policy.

Historical Microsoft Data Access Components, or MDAC, manifests describe the file as the OLE DB Extensions Library. OLE DB is a COM-based architecture that lets applications access databases and other data sources through providers and services. That means an older accounting package, inventory tool, reporting utility, or Visual Basic 6 application may load this file as part of its database startup sequence.
This does not mean that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain oledb32x.dll. It is normally supplied by the legacy application’s installer or by an old, application-specific data-access prerequisite.

Installing a modern SQL Server provider may be correct for a database connection problem, but it does not automatically replace an old application’s required oledb32x.dll.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely and safest solution because the program may need several matching DLLs, registry entries, providers, and private runtime files.
If the program has a repair option
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, or select the program and choose Modify.
- Choose Repair, if available.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
- Start the application again.
If the application has its own launcher, open it and look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Check installation. This is preferable to changing files manually.

- Locate the application’s original installer, installation media, or the vendor’s current installer.
- Back up the application’s data before removing anything.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the trusted installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the vendor-documented database component or runtime if the setup program offers one.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the program to reach its sign-in screen, main window, or database connection screen. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may not include the required legacy prerequisite, or security software may be removing it again.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless the application vendor explicitly supplied that exact signed file and documented its destination.
Fix 2: Install the vendor’s legacy prerequisite
Older VB6 and database programs may depend on a particular MDAC-era component. Microsoft’s older MDAC and newer Windows Data Access Components are not interchangeable repair packages.

Microsoft states that MDAC 2.8 was included with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, while Windows Data Access Components became the built-in data-access layer beginning with Windows Vista. The separately redistributable MDAC 2.8 SP1 package was intended for Windows 2000, not as a general missing-DLL solution for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows DAC and MDAC FAQ explains this distinction.
To find the correct prerequisite:
- Identify the exact application shown in the error or its title bar.
- Visit that application vendor’s official support or download page.
- Search for the application name plus system requirements, runtime, database engine, or compatibility update.
- Confirm that the package supports your Windows version and the application’s architecture.
- Install it with the application closed.
- Restart Windows and test the original program.
Do not treat Microsoft’s MDAC 2.8 SDK as a missing-DLL repair download. It is a developer SDK, not a universal runtime installer.
If the vendor has discontinued the software, use the original installation media and documentation. A current replacement application may be safer than trying to reconstruct an unsupported database stack.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old application file, especially after an update or a change in detection rules.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that names
oledb32x.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from trusted original installation media or the verified application installer.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward.
- Start the program and confirm that the error is gone.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again until the user explicitly allows it.
Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to make the error disappear. If the file was downloaded from an unknown source, leave it quarantined, remove it, and obtain a clean copy through the application vendor.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when other Windows features are also malfunctioning, or when the problem began after disk damage, malware, or a failed update. It may not restore oledb32x.dll if that file belongs only to an application.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Microsoft documents this process in its Windows image repair guidance.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the application installation is healthy. It may simply mean oledb32x.dll is not part of the protected Windows image. Return to the application repair step.
Recommended Free Tools
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, restart the computer, install pending Windows updates, and run the commands again from an elevated Command Prompt. Persistent component errors may require System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual problem remains inside the legacy application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Many applications that use this file are old 32-bit programs. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows needs compatible 32-bit components and providers. Installing a 64-bit database provider does not necessarily satisfy it.
Check the application before installing anything:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit.
- Check the application vendor’s documentation for the program’s architecture.
- Reinstall the application using its normal installer rather than manually placing files.
- Install the provider or runtime in the architecture required by the application.
- Test the program again.
Windows separates native and 32-bit system components through WOW64 redirection. Microsoft describes the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation. Do not assume that System32 is the correct destination for this file, and do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder.

If the application is too old for current Windows, use the vendor’s compatibility guidance or a supported replacement. Restoring one DLL may not resolve deeper incompatibilities in the program or its database provider.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to them
A missing oledb32x.dll is usually an application installation problem, not a graphics or chipset driver problem. Driver work is appropriate when the application also reports device failures, display problems, storage errors, or connection hardware issues.
For a manual driver check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the symptom.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the application.
For a known driver package, download it only from the device manufacturer or computer manufacturer, then follow its installer instructions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns this DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a guess
regsvr32 registers compatible COM DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes its use in the regsvr32 command documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no reliable Microsoft instruction saying that a missing oledb32x.dll should be registered independently. Running:
regsvr32 oledb32x.dll
may produce a registration error, or it may appear to succeed without restoring the application’s other dependencies. Registration should be performed by the original installer or by explicit vendor instructions.
If the file exists but still will not load
Check the exact filename and location shown by the error. The application may actually require oledb32.dll, msado15.dll, msdasc.dll, or a database-provider DLL.

Other possibilities include:
- The DLL exists but another dependency is missing.
- The file is the wrong architecture.
- The application’s registry entries are damaged.
- A provider required by the application was removed.
- The file is present but incompatible with the remaining MDAC-era files.
If reinstalling does not help, identify the executable that loads the DLL, review the application’s installation log, and contact the vendor. A dependency or process monitor can show which module fails next. This is more useful than installing unrelated .NET, Visual C++ Redistributable, SQL Server, or Windows Features packages at random.

Prevention
- Keep the original installer and vendor prerequisite files with the application’s data backup.
- Use the application’s repair or verification function after major Windows updates.
- Do not delete legacy Common Files or application folders during disk cleanup unless you know which programs use them.
- Review antivirus quarantine after every update or reinstall.
- Keep the application and its database provider at compatible versions.
- Avoid DLL download sites and unverified copies.
- Record whether the application is 32-bit before replacing a provider or runtime.
FAQ
Is oledb32x.dll a Windows file?
It is a genuine Microsoft legacy OLE DB file, but it is not a file that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation must contain. It is commonly delivered with an older application or prerequisite.
Is it part of Visual Basic 6?
It is listed by Microsoft among legacy VB6-related runtime files. That does not mean installing the VB6 development environment is required or appropriate. The application vendor should provide the compatible runtime and data-access prerequisites.
Is it part of Office?
There is no basis to assume that repairing or reinstalling Office will restore this file. Start with the program named in the error.
Should I install SQL Server OLE DB Driver?
Only if the application’s vendor specifically requires it. Microsoft treats the modern OLE DB Driver for SQL Server separately from the old MDAC extension library.
Can I download oledb32x.dll separately?
Do not use a random DLL download. The copy may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the application. Use the original installer or a file supplied by the application vendor.
Why did SFC find nothing?
SFC repairs protected Windows files, not every file installed by third-party applications. A clean SFC result is consistent with an application-private oledb32x.dll being missing.
