filecryptik.dll is an application DLL associated by public file inventories with GlobalSCAPE/Fortra CuteFTP, especially CuteFTP 9. If CuteFTP will not start because the file is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the matching CuteFTP installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
filecryptik.dll is not a Windows system component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or standard Visual C++ redistributable. The strongest available evidence associates it with the CuteFTP application directory, where it sits beside the program executable and other private product files.

Public evidence does not establish the DLL’s exact function, exported functions, cryptographic role, or official version history. The name alone is not enough to prove that it performs encryption or authentication.
Some third-party catalogs describe a 32-bit file with version 0.0.0.0 and a size of approximately 0.52 MB. Treat those details as catalog metadata, not as an authoritative CuteFTP release specification. Do not use a reported size or version to select a replacement file.

Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s executable directory for private DLLs before searching system locations. That means the correct copy normally belongs in the CuteFTP installation folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The exact wording varies. These messages are commonly reported variants, not confirmed wording from an official CuteFTP troubleshooting article.
Fix 1: Repair CuteFTP with the matching installer
This is the safest and most likely fix because the installer restores the DLL together with its correct neighboring files and dependencies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Close the error dialog and any remaining CuteFTP process.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Search for CuteFTP.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall or Modify, depending on what the installed build provides.
- If a maintenance wizard appears, select Repair or Update.
- If Windows only offers Uninstall, obtain the installer for the exact CuteFTP product and version from the official GlobalSCAPE/Fortra CuteFTP download channel.
- Run the installer. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if Windows blocks it.
- Select the installed product and version that matches your license.
- Choose Update or Repair when the installer offers that choice.
- Restart Windows and launch CuteFTP from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair should allow CuteFTP to start without the filecryptik.dll message. It should also restore the file beside the CuteFTP executable rather than placing it in a Windows system folder.
If the installer reports that the product is not installed, or repair completes without changing the error, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall CuteFTP completely
Use this when the installation is badly damaged, the installer cannot find the existing product, or the DLL was manually deleted.
Before removing CuteFTP, back up any settings, site definitions, certificates, and saved credentials that you still need. Do not assume uninstalling preserves every setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find CuteFTP, select its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the matching installer only from the official GlobalSCAPE/Fortra CuteFTP source or your organization’s verified software portal.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Install the same CuteFTP product and version family that your license supports.
- Launch CuteFTP before restoring old settings.
- Restore settings selectively if the clean installation works.
If CuteFTP starts after the clean installation, the original problem was probably an incomplete update, damaged application files, or an incorrect copied installation. If the same error returns immediately, check Windows Security before repeatedly reinstalling.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Do not restore the file automatically. First establish that the CuteFTP installer and installation directory are genuine.
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries recorded around the time CuteFTP stopped starting.
- Look for an action involving
FileCryptIK.dll,filecryptik.dll, or the CuteFTP installation directory. - Check the detected path and the action taken.
- If the file belongs to a verified CuteFTP installation and the installer came from the official vendor, review the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Restart CuteFTP and test it.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. If you cannot verify the installer or the file path, do not restore the quarantined DLL. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall CuteFTP from the official source instead.
If another security product is installed, inspect its quarantine or detection history as well. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to make the error disappear.

Fix 4: Reinstall the complete application, not one DLL
A copied DLL is rarely the whole repair. CuteFTP may require adjacent product libraries, configuration files, manifests, and dependencies that are missing from a partial installation.
Check the path shown in the error, or locate the application manually:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the CuteFTP installation directory for
cuteftp.exe,cuteftppro.exe, andFileCryptIK.dll. - Confirm that the error is being generated by the CuteFTP executable you actually use.
- If
FileCryptIK.dllis missing, do not copy a file from another computer or another CuteFTP release. - Run the official installer and repair the complete installation.
Do not place the file in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or every application folder. That can create version conflicts and DLL hijacking opportunities. Application-private DLLs normally stay with the executable that loads them.
Do not use regsvr32 for this problem. Ordinary application libraries are not necessarily COM or ActiveX servers, and they may not export DllRegisterServer. Running a command such as regsvr32 FileCryptIK.dll will not recreate a missing dependency and may produce an expected “entry point was not found” error. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when that command applies.
Fix 5: Check for a dependent DLL
The message “The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may have found filecryptik.dll but failed to load a different library that it depends on.

To investigate:
- Confirm that
FileCryptIK.dllexists in the CuteFTP installation directory. - Launch CuteFTP and note the exact error text.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Windows + X, selecting Event Viewer, then opening Windows Logs → Application. - Look for an error recorded at the time CuteFTP failed.
- Note the failing executable and any named module.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool or contact GlobalSCAPE/Fortra support with the CuteFTP version and full error text.
Do not download whichever dependency name appears first in a search result. A dependency problem is safest to solve by repairing the complete CuteFTP package.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are failing too
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate a private CuteFTP DLL. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged and several unrelated programs show missing-component or startup errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press the Start button.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test CuteFTP again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. You can follow Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance if either command reports an error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When you are manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies; its full version performs repairs. It is optional, and reinstalling CuteFTP remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but CuteFTP still fails, that result does not prove filecryptik.dll was repaired. Return to the CuteFTP installer steps.
Fix 7: Check architecture, drivers, and Windows features
Available catalog metadata describes filecryptik.dll as 32-bit, but that information is not independently confirmed by the vendor. Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL or a file from another application version. Install the CuteFTP build intended for your system and license instead.
Windows Features are not normally relevant to this private CuteFTP DLL. You can still check whether a broader Windows component is disabled:
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review enabled features without changing them randomly.
- If the error names a specific Windows feature, enable that feature, select OK, and restart.
Device Manager is also not a primary fix for filecryptik.dll. Use it only when the computer has wider driver problems:
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons under Display adapters, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click a clearly affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a verified driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not update unrelated drivers simply because CuteFTP reports a missing application DLL. If you are hunting through many device vendors and repeating manual driver checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version performs driver installation. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling CuteFTP remains the correct fix for filecryptik.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Avoid websites offering standalone copies of filecryptik.dll. A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different CuteFTP build, or omit the dependency that caused the failure. It can also make future updates and security investigations harder.

There is no verified standalone Microsoft or GlobalSCAPE download for this DLL. Use the official CuteFTP installer to restore the complete application package.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Check these points in order:
- Confirm that the error comes from CuteFTP, not another program with a similarly named file.
- Check the exact installation path and filename.
- Inspect Windows Security and third-party antivirus quarantine history.
- Test CuteFTP from a clean Windows user profile.
- Temporarily investigate third-party security software interference without leaving the computer unprotected.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application.
- Contact GlobalSCAPE/Fortra support with the CuteFTP version, full path, and complete error text.
System Restore is a fallback only when the failure began after a known system change and no clean installer is available. It is not a replacement for repairing the application from a verified source.
FAQ
Is filecryptik.dll a Windows file?
No. Public file inventories associate it with CuteFTP, not with Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it through the CuteFTP installer so it returns to the application directory with the correct surrounding files.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not based on this filename alone. Install or repair a runtime only when the error separately names a component such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does the 32-bit listing mean my Windows installation is wrong?
No. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows. The available catalog metadata is not a reliable substitute for the correct CuteFTP installer.
Is the missing DLL proof of malware?
No. Incomplete updates, quarantine, corruption, and partial file copies are more practical explanations. A copy found outside the expected CuteFTP directory deserves additional scrutiny.
What is the correct first step?
Use the matching official CuteFTP installer and select Update or Repair. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the complete application.
