For a first playthrough, choose Manibus (Novice), follow the opening quests until you unlock the Territory Terminal, then build a small, practical base and learn how Sanity, crafting, and Deviations fit into your routine. Once Human is a free-to-play multiplayer open-world survival game; its scenarios change the rules and experience, and a scenario transition does not mean either a total wipe or unrestricted carryover.
What kind of game is Once Human?
Once Human combines open-world exploration, survival, base building, collectible anomalies called Deviations, and dungeon challenges. Scenarios provide distinct settings, stories, rules, environmental mechanics, and PvE or PvP experiences. That means your first important choice is not a weapon build: it is which scenario and server experience you want to join. The official game FAQ describes Once Human as a “multiplayer open-world survival game” and says paid offerings include cosmetics, a Battle Pass, and other content that does not affect gameplay or fairness. Once Human Development Team, Console Launch FAQ, published August 27, 2026.
Which scenario should you choose?
For a first playthrough: Manibus (Novice)
The developer recommends Manibus (Novice) for beginners. Treat it as an orientation route for learning the game’s systems and scenario rules before committing to a more specialized experience. The official FAQ explains that scenarios can differ in their mechanics and PvE/PvP experience; the live scenario picker is the place to check what is currently available and what each option requires. - Group expectations: Check whether the scenario’s activities and rules suit solo play, coordinated groups, or warband-style participation.

Scenario examples and balance can be patch-sensitive. For current descriptions, consult the Once Human Game Wiki’s scenarios guide and verify the live details in the game.
Playing with friends or across devices
Agree on the scenario and server before starting so you can play together. The official FAQ lists PS5 and PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and cross-play with the existing PC and mobile versions. If you are linking accounts across devices, read the account-linking instructions first: the FAQ warns that linking two accounts that both contain characters can result in one set of characters being discarded. What should you do first?
- Choose a scenario and server. For a first run, start with Manibus (Novice). If you are joining friends, confirm the same scenario and server with them first.
- Follow the opening questline. Use the main quests to learn the basic controls, objectives, and systems. Continue until you unlock the Territory Terminal.
- Place a practical first base. A beginner walkthrough recommends looking for a location near water and useful ore. Favor a convenient, functional site over a large showcase build while you are still learning where you will spend time. Once Human Wiki beginner’s guide, updated July 28, 2026.
- Unlock useful Memetics. Memetics are the game’s technology and crafting unlocks. Prioritize the crafting and survival functions you need for your next tasks instead of spreading your early progress across cosmetic or nonessential projects. Check the current in-game options as you unlock them.
- Keep questing while maintaining your base. Use nearby exploration and quest objectives to gather what you need, then return to craft, restock, and improve the base as your immediate needs change.
The opening route and early priorities are also covered in the Once Human Game Wiki getting-started guide, updated September 6, 2026.
How do you stay alive and ready to fight?
Watch Sanity
Sanity matters because low Sanity can reduce your maximum HP. Treat it as part of combat readiness, not a meter to ignore until a fight goes badly. Use food and other available recovery options when you need them, and check the item descriptions and current in-game guidance for their effects. The exact best item or routine is not universal across every situation.

Manage food, water, and hazards
Cooking and keeping water available are part of the survival loop. Pay attention to contaminated areas and any scenario-specific conditions before entering or settling nearby. The details can vary by scenario: temperature is a relevant concern in Way of Winter, for example, so check that scenario’s current guidance rather than carrying over assumptions from another one. The beginner’s guide and getting-started guide cover early survival priorities.
Prepare before an expedition
- Check your current HP and Sanity before a difficult activity.
- Bring food, water, and supplies appropriate to the area and objective.
- Use the map and scenario guidance to account for hazards you may not have encountered in a different region.
- Return to your base when you need to craft or restock rather than treating every outing as a one-way push.
How should you use Deviations?
Deviations are collectible anomalies that can support different jobs, including combat and territory work. Think of them as tools for the problem you are solving: one may suit an expedition while another helps with base tasks. Early capture suggestions in beginner guides are starting points, not a permanent ranking of the best Deviations; availability, balance, and your needs can change. Check a Deviation’s current in-game description and try options that support your routine rather than chasing a universal “best” choice. The beginner’s guide and getting-started guide discuss early priorities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a sensible early-game routine?
Once the introduction is complete, use a repeatable loop that advances quests without letting basic needs pile up:
- Pick a nearby objective. Continue a main quest or explore an area that supports your current goals.
- Gather with a purpose. Collect useful materials and supplies as you travel instead of roaming without a plan.
- Handle survival needs. Keep Sanity, food, water, and local hazards in view, especially before combat or deeper exploration.
- Return and craft. Use your base to make what you need and unlock relevant Memetics.
- Adjust your tools. Choose Deviations and equipment for the next activity based on their current descriptions and your needs.
- Join group activities when ready. Coordinate with other players when an activity or scenario suits it; you do not need to master every system before trying cooperative play.
There is no need to treat a particular weapon or build as mandatory. Build balance and scenario details are patch-sensitive, so use current in-game information rather than relying on a supposedly permanent ranking.

What happens when a scenario ends?
The official FAQ describes three choices when a scenario ends: remain on the current server, sign up for a new scenario/server, or return to Eternaland. A transition is managed by the game’s transfer rules; it is not a guarantee that everything follows you directly into the next scenario.
Items that move to Eternaland
The FAQ lists weapons, armor, materials, medicine, Deviations, and calibration blueprints among the items transferred to Eternaland. Official scenario-transition FAQ.
Taking selected items into a new scenario
Some selected items can be brought into a new scenario using Resource Inheritance Points. Point costs differ by item, and the transfer rules determine what is eligible. Before leaving or enrolling in another scenario, review the available transfer options and decide which items matter most to your next start; do not assume you can carry everything without limits.
How can you check what is current?
Scenario availability, enrollment, phases, event schedules, and build balance may change. Check the in-game scenario/server interface and the official Once Human news page before making a time-sensitive decision. A dated official notice about a final test is evidence of a test announcement, not by itself proof that the scenario is available as a full playable release.
