Once Human combines survival, monster combat, crafting and territory building in a free-to-play online game. Here’s what to know about purchases, seasons, platforms and PC requirements.

Once Human is a free-to-play online survival game that brings together resource management, monster combat, weapon crafting, base building and PvE or PvP play. Its appeal depends on whether that mix—and its scenario-based online progression—fits what you want from a survival game. Steam also lists in-app and chance-based in-game purchases, so the game is free to start, but not free of monetization.

What kind of game is Once Human?

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Once Human blends survival systems with shooting, crafting, exploration and online play. Steam describes a world where food and water matter, pollution can affect sanity and maximum health, and players explore while fighting monsters and bosses. You can craft and customize weapons, build a territory, and play in PvE or PvP settings. Steam lists online co-op and MMO features as well.

That mix is the clearest way to judge the game’s fit: it is not only a shooter, a base-building game or a traditional survival sandbox. Players looking for a world that connects those activities may find the premise appealing; anyone who dislikes managing survival needs alongside combat may find the combination less attractive. The official listing establishes these systems, but does not by itself establish how satisfying their balance or moment-to-moment execution feels.

How is the monetization?

The base game is free to play. Steam labels it as containing in-app purchases and chance-based in-game purchases, and its store page discloses interactive elements including chat and online interaction. That is the important qualification for a prospective player: optional purchases exist, including mechanics Steam identifies as chance-based.

A dated example is the official July 2025 update, which described a Lightforge Loot Crate and a Reward Covenant gift pack. The crate’s stated availability was July 2 through August 13, 2025, and the gift pack was tied to an event running July 2 through July 28, 2025. Those windows have passed; they do not establish what the shop sells now or at what price. The available evidence also does not support calling the game pay-to-win or saying purchases are cosmetic-only.

How do seasons and servers affect progression?

Once Human uses a season system, so players should distinguish scenario-based progression from the idea of one unchanging world. The official release FAQ describes the season system, while a December 2025 developer update outlined rules for permanent servers and resource supply points. In that update, the developer said permanent-server supply points reset monthly to a maximum of 20,000 and introduced server preselection intended to help players and Hives remain together during server merges.

The same December 2025 update announced that Evolution’s Call and Prismverse’s Clash PvP permanent servers would close in January 2026. The developer said those specific servers usually had fewer than 50 active players. That statement applies to those server types in the context of the closure announcement—not to every server, and not as a current population estimate. Server policies can change, so check the latest in-game or official notices before making plans around transfers, merges or long-term character continuity.

Can you play with friends on other platforms?

Platform and account setup matter. NetEase announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched on August 25, 2026, with cross-play and cross-progression planned from launch. However, the official release FAQ says some account types, including Steam accounts, have cross-platform limitations. Taken together, those statements do not promise that every account combination can play or progress together. Confirm compatibility for the specific platforms and account types your group will use before choosing where to start.

Steam PC system requirements

These are the requirements listed on Steam, not independent performance tests or a guarantee of a particular frame rate. The store lists 100 GB of available storage for both tiers and highly recommends an SSD.

Console graphics claims

NetEase announced Quality Mode at 4K/60 FPS and Performance Mode at 120 FPS for the console build. These are publisher-announced specifications, not independently verified benchmarks.

What do player reviews say?

On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 80% positive English user reviews out of 92,983 total English reviews, and 89% positive recent reviews out of 4,344 reviews in the preceding 30 days. These are dated, changeable user-review aggregates—not critic scores or a substitute for deciding whether the game’s survival, shooting and online progression systems suit you.

Verdict: who should try Once Human?

Once Human is worth considering if you want a free-to-start online game that combines survival pressures, combat, crafting, territory building and PvE or PvP play. Before investing time, check that your PC meets Steam’s listed requirements or that your preferred console is supported, and confirm cross-platform compatibility with friends. Treat its seasonal and server structure as part of the experience, and go in knowing that Steam discloses chance-based purchases. Whether it is worth sticking with depends on your own experience of the loop; the available official and storefront information does not establish combat quality, grind, balance or technical performance.
