It removes much of the initial setup, but it does not turn the VPS into a fully managed service: you still secure it, configure domains and secrets, choose persistent storage, schedule backups and maintain the operating system and applications.

For most projects, the choice is about layers. Docker gives you a general container runtime. Coolify adds a web control plane for deploying and operating several applications. An n8n image gives you a ready-to-run workflow automation application. The right option depends on whether you want one application, a reusable container host or a multi-service platform.

What a one-click VPS image actually is
Cloud providers package a one-click application as a reusable server image. DigitalOcean defines its 1-Click applications as pre-built Droplet images or Kubernetes applications with software, features and configuration details already set up. When you select one, the provider creates a normal VPS from that prepared state instead of giving you an empty operating-system installation.
The image is a starting configuration, not a permanent appliance. You receive a server with the selected software installed, but you remain responsible for administration: firewall policy, operating-system updates, application updates, credentials, DNS, storage, backups, monitoring and recovery. A one-click deployment can save installation time while leaving the important operational decisions to you.

What is inside the image
- An operating system and the provider’s image-level configuration.
- The selected software, such as Docker Engine and Docker Compose, a Coolify control plane or an n8n installation.
- Defaults that allow the software to start on the new VPS.
- Provider metadata so the image can be selected in a control panel or through an API image slug.
Exact packages and defaults can change as a provider publishes a newer image. Check the image description and release notes at creation time, then treat the machine as your own server after it launches.
Docker, Coolify and n8n are different layers
These options overlap, but they are not interchangeable products. Docker is infrastructure software, Coolify is a management layer that runs on Docker, and n8n is an application. Understanding that hierarchy prevents a common mistake: choosing an application image when you really need a host for several services, or choosing a general runtime when you want a guided control panel.

Docker 1-Click: the flexible foundation
The Docker 1-Click App creates a DigitalOcean Droplet with Docker Engine and Docker Compose already installed. That removes the engine installation and initial package work, but Docker does not select your applications or design your production setup.
What Docker lets you control
You choose which container images to run, how services communicate, which ports are exposed, where volumes live and how updates are performed. A Compose-based project can describe several related containers, such as an application, a database and a cache, in one repeatable configuration. This is useful when you want a game-related service, a dashboard, a database or a private utility on the same host and are comfortable maintaining each component.
Where Docker requires more expertise
You must understand image tags, Compose configuration, environment variables, bind mounts or named volumes, networks and restart behavior. You also need a plan for database backups and for replacing containers without deleting persistent data. Docker gives control and portability, but it does not provide a built-in deployment dashboard, automatic domain management or a complete backup policy.
Coolify: a web control plane for several services
DigitalOcean describes Coolify as an open-source, self-hostable alternative to platforms such as Heroku, Netlify and Vercel. It runs as Docker containers and provides a web interface for deploying applications, databases and other services. Coolify’s own description says it can deploy websites, databases and web applications with more than 280 one-click services on supported servers.

- Domain assignment and automatic TLS certificate handling.
- Environment-variable and secret configuration.
- Deployment logs, runtime logs and monitoring views.
- Backups and service-management workflows.
- One-click templates for services including WordPress, Ghost, Plausible, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, MinIO, Uptime Kuma and n8n.
Coolify itself uses Docker containers. It therefore does not replace Docker; it organizes Docker-based deployments and adds a higher-level operating interface. You still need to understand what data must persist, how much CPU and memory the workloads consume and how to recover the server.
n8n 1-Click: an application-first deployment
n8n is a workflow-automation tool that connects tasks between applications, services and APIs. DigitalOcean’s n8n 1-Click App is a preconfigured deployment intended to reduce the installation work required to start an n8n instance on a secure, scalable Droplet.
This option is appropriate when your immediate goal is an n8n installation rather than a general platform. It gives you a faster path to the application, but you still have to create an administrator account, protect credentials, set a public URL, configure HTTPS, preserve workflow and execution data, and keep n8n and the underlying server current.
Can Coolify run n8n and other applications on one VPS?
Yes. Coolify can deploy n8n as one service while hosting other applications and databases as separate Docker-managed services. The services can share a server while retaining separate configuration, logs and persistent-storage definitions.

- You have several small or moderate workloads and want one administration interface.
- You need n8n alongside a website, database, cache or monitoring service.
- You are prepared to size the VPS for the combined peak load rather than for n8n alone.
- You can isolate credentials, volumes and network exposure for each service.
When to separate servers
Use separate VPS instances when one workload has unpredictable CPU or memory spikes, requires strict isolation, handles sensitive data with different access rules or must remain available while another service is being upgraded. A single server is simpler and may cost less, but a host failure affects every service on it. Multiple servers increase administration and backup scope while reducing that shared failure domain.

Think of Docker as the lower-level runtime, Coolify as an operations layer and n8n as an application. Coolify can deploy n8n, while a Docker host can run either of them if you configure the containers yourself.

Resource planning for Coolify
DigitalOcean publishes the following Coolify sizing guidance. The figures are workload guidance, not guarantees; databases, build jobs, concurrent requests and background tasks can require more capacity.

Storage must cover the operating system, container layers, logs, databases, uploads, backups and temporary build files. A large disk does not compensate for insufficient memory, and a fast CPU does not protect you from a full volume. Monitor real usage after launch and resize before the server begins swapping or rejecting writes.

Use this sequence whether you start with Docker, Coolify or n8n. The exact control-panel labels vary by provider, but the responsibilities are the same.
- Record the initial state. Note the image name and version, public IP address, operating-system release and installed application versions. Keep this information with your recovery notes.
- Secure administrative access. Use key-based SSH where available, remove or disable unused accounts, choose a strong administrator credential and restrict remote access to the users and networks that need it.
- Review the firewall. Expose only required ports. DigitalOcean’s default Coolify instructions document ports 22, 80, 443, 8000, 6001 and 6002; verify which of these your deployment actually needs before opening them broadly.
- Assign a domain. Create DNS records pointing the chosen hostname to the VPS address. Use a stable hostname for the control panel or application rather than relying on a temporary IP-based URL.
- Set the instance URL and HTTPS. Coolify can request certificates through Let’s Encrypt after the domain is configured. Confirm DNS resolution first, then verify certificate issuance and automatic renewal.
- Create the first application account. For Coolify or n8n, complete the initial administrator setup immediately and store the credentials in a password manager. Do not leave a setup page publicly reachable.
- Define environment variables and secrets. Add API keys, database passwords, webhook secrets and encryption keys through the platform’s secret mechanism or protected configuration. Never place credentials in a public Compose file or source repository.
- Choose persistent storage. Identify every directory containing workflow data, database files, uploads or game-world data. Map those paths to durable volumes before deploying production workloads.
- Configure backups. Back up databases and application data separately from the server image. Test restoring a representative backup; an untested copy is not a recovery plan.
- Deploy a small test service. Confirm DNS, HTTPS, logs, restart behavior and persistence before adding more applications. A test deployment reveals firewall or volume mistakes while the stack is still simple.
- Set an update routine. Keep the operating system, Docker components, Coolify and application images current. Read release notes, back up first and update one service at a time when several services share the host.
Ports, domains and TLS: the networking details
One-click images often work immediately on an internal address, but public access requires deliberate networking. Port 22 is commonly used for SSH administration; ports 80 and 443 are standard web entry points. Coolify’s documented setup also references 8000, 6001 and 6002 for its platform components. Open only the ports required by your selected version and deployment.
Point DNS to the VPS before requesting a certificate. If a hostname resolves to an old address, certificate issuance can fail or traffic can reach the wrong server. After HTTPS works, test redirects, renewal status and any webhook URLs used by n8n. For game services, expose only the specific gameplay or query ports required by the server and keep administration interfaces off the public internet where possible.
Persistent data and backups
Containers are replaceable; their writable layers should not be your only copy of important data. Store databases, n8n configuration, uploaded files and game-world saves in named volumes or deliberate host paths. Document the path, owner, permissions and backup method for each volume.

Use provider snapshots or backups for convenient server recovery, and use application-aware exports for databases and workflow data. DigitalOcean documents image classes, Droplet snapshots and volume backups. A snapshot can restore a machine state, but it does not remove the need to test a recent application-data restore or to keep credentials and DNS information outside the VPS.

The control panel opens locally but not from the internet
Check DNS, the VPS firewall, the provider firewall and whether the service is listening on the expected interface and port. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the current IP address and that no second service is already bound to the same port.
HTTPS certificate issuance fails
Verify that the domain’s DNS record has propagated to the VPS, ports 80 and 443 are reachable and no proxy or stale record is intercepting the request. Correct the DNS or firewall issue, then retry certificate issuance rather than repeatedly changing application settings.

A container restarts and loses data
Inspect logs for the immediate error, then check whether the data directory is mounted to persistent storage. Recreating a container should not remove a correctly configured volume; if it does, stop and identify the storage mapping before deploying again.
The server becomes slow after adding services
Compare memory, CPU, disk and log growth against the published sizing guidance. Reduce concurrent workloads, cap noisy services, rotate logs, move a database or split workloads across servers. Do not assume that a successful initial deployment means the VPS has capacity for future applications.
An update breaks a service
Use the last known-good image or snapshot, restore application data if necessary and read the release notes for configuration changes. Pinning a tested image version can make rollbacks predictable; update deliberately instead of pulling every latest tag at once.

Using one-click images for game-related projects
A gaming site or community may use a VPS for a website, status page, moderation workflow, analytics service, map-rendering utility or a dedicated game server. The same principles apply: separate public gameplay traffic from administration, preserve world and configuration files, monitor CPU and memory during peak sessions and back up before changing mods or server versions.
Docker is useful when you need to define the exact container stack for a game service and its supporting database. Coolify is useful when the gaming project also includes several web applications, dashboards or databases. An n8n deployment is relevant for automating notifications, form processing or integrations around the community, but it should be treated as an application with its own secrets and persistent data rather than as a substitute for the game server itself.
Provider options and portability
DigitalOcean exposes Droplet one-click applications in its control panel and through API image slugs. Hetzner documents a Coolify cloud app or image containing Docker and the listed applications as Docker containers, with setup available through the Hetzner Cloud API. Because Coolify and Docker use container definitions, you can generally move application configuration between providers, but portability still depends on exported volumes, database dumps, DNS changes, secrets and provider-specific networking.
Keep Compose files, Coolify configuration notes, environment-variable names and backup instructions in version control or another protected location. That documentation is what lets you recreate a service on a new VPS if an image is retired or a provider becomes unsuitable.
The practical decision
Select Docker when you want the lowest-level, most portable container host and are prepared to operate the stack yourself. Select the n8n image when one workflow-automation instance is the immediate requirement and you value a prepared installation. Select Coolify when several applications, databases or services must share a server and you want domains, TLS, deployments, logs and backups presented through one control plane.

Whichever image you choose, plan the post-deployment work before clicking create: secure access, verify firewall ports, connect DNS, enable HTTPS, protect secrets, mount persistent storage, test backups and monitor capacity. That preparation is what turns a one-click starting state into a dependable VPS.
