The Switch edition bundles previously released DLC and adds portable play, but its familiar level design and modest extras make it a less compelling return purchase for people who already played the Wii U or 3DS version.
What kind of game is Unlimited World Red?
Bandai Namco describes Unlimited World Red as an action-adventure built around an original “Island of Promises” story, with the Straw Hat crew and new characters Pato and the Red Count, designed by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. Luffy explores the Forgotten Island, takes quests from its residents and fights through missions while trying to rescue kidnapped crewmates. The adventure also includes bosses such as Rob Lucci and Caesar Clown.
A central town provides a hub between missions. That setup gives the game room for quests and character-driven scenes, but the main attraction is fast, colorful combat rather than a complex exploration system.
What does the Deluxe Edition include?
The Switch Deluxe Edition includes more than 40 pieces of previously released downloadable content, according to Bandai Namco’s September 29, 2017 launch announcement. Nintendo Life describes the paid add-ons as costumes and extra quests. The publisher also says the Switch remaster has higher HD screen resolution and a higher frame rate.

#1 Best Overall
- Original Story: New scenario designed by Eiichiro Oda.
- Co-Op: Fishing, bug catching, battling, cooking, mining, battling, exploring.
- Epic Fights: Latest episodes + famous boss battles.
- Playable Characters: 9 from the Straw hat crew.
- New Characters: Pato and big boss "Red" designed by Eiichiro Oda.
For returning players, the additions are mostly a collection of extras rather than a substantially different campaign. Nintendo Life’s review singled out the 15th anniversary costume collection as a notable costume set, but judged the DLC unlikely to convince most people who had already played an earlier version to return.
How does the Switch version play?
Nintendo Life reviewed the European Switch version on September 27, 2017, awarding it 7/10. Reviewer Morgan Sleeper praised its vibrant presentation, enjoyable beat-’em-up combat, and bosses. The playable characters have distinct fighting styles, helping combat feel varied even when the mission structure is familiar.

Combat, levels, and pacing
The main drawback is repetition: routes through levels are straightforward, and backtracking can make missions feel like corridors to clear rather than places to explore. The review also found that the game offers limited onboarding for people unfamiliar with One Piece, so newcomers may miss context that fans already know.
Frame rate and handheld play
Sleeper reported that the Switch game runs at 60 frames per second outside cutscenes, which run at a lower rate. That is the review’s assessment, not a result from independent technical testing. The reviewer found the Switch’s handheld and home-console formats a good match for the game’s short levels and quick action.
One Switch-specific inconvenience is that it lacks the 3DS version’s second screen: checking the mini-map means opening the menu more often. Whether that matters depends on how often you consult the map while playing.
Does the Switch edition have local co-op?
Yes. The publisher says local co-op is available for story missions and side quests, as well as cooperative boss battles in Battle Coliseum. Nintendo Life’s review describes drop-in, two-player local co-op and says each player can use one Joy-Con. This is local play; the cited sources do not establish online co-op.
Rank #4
- The adventure will come loaded with incredible content thanks to the inclusion of more than 40 DLC's.
- Re-discover the original adventure of Luffy and his pirate crew that encounter and befriends a cheerful yet mysterious raccoon named Pato- who possesses a shadowy power to create anything drawn onto a leaf.
- All of the Straw-Hat crew playable.
How does it compare with the Wii U and 3DS versions?
The Switch edition’s clearest differences are its bundled DLC, remastered presentation, and ability to play on a television or in handheld and tabletop modes. Nintendo Life’s review found little in the core game to distinguish it from the earlier Wii U and 3DS releases. Its comparison suggests weighing what you would actually use rather than treating “Deluxe” as a new campaign:
| What matters to you | What the evidence indicates |
|---|---|
| You already played the original | The core experience adds little beyond the earlier Wii U and 3DS versions, according to Nintendo Life’s review. |
| You want local co-op or portable play | The Switch supports local two-player play and TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, according to the review and Nintendo’s store listing. |
| You missed the add-on content | The Deluxe Edition bundles more than 40 pieces of DLC; the review describes costumes and extra quests, but considers the overall additions modest for many returning players. |
| You dislike repetitive routes | The review notes straightforward level paths and backtracking, which may be a poor fit if you want varied exploration. |
Is it good for someone new to One Piece?
It can work as a self-contained action-adventure, but it is not the strongest choice if your main goal is an introduction to the franchise. Bandai Namco presents it as an original story, yet Nintendo Life’s reviewer noted that newcomers receive limited onboarding. Fans are more likely to appreciate the crew and character moments without needing the game to explain the series from scratch.

What should Switch owners know before buying?
Nintendo’s US store lists this as a digital Switch edition, with TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and single-system play for one or two players. Its listed languages are Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and American English. The store gives September 29, 2017 as the release date and lists a 10.5 GB file size; storefront details can change, so check the listing before downloading. See the Nintendo Switch store page for current listing information.
Bandai Namco’s official game page says the game has sold over 1 million units worldwide. That figure is undated and does not indicate current sales or critical consensus. The publisher’s launch announcement also included a statement from Randy Le, Associate Brand Manager at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc., emphasizing handheld and tabletop play; that is the company’s promotional view, not independent review evidence.
Verdict: Is Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition worth it?
For One Piece fans who want an original side story, energetic combat, and local co-op, the Switch Deluxe Edition offers a straightforward way to play with the DLC included. It is a harder recommendation for newcomers looking for a franchise primer or for Wii U and 3DS owners hoping for enough new content to justify buying the game again. Nintendo Life’s 7/10 rating applies specifically to its review of the European Switch version in 2017; it is not a current aggregate score or a comparison of every platform.
