Put several independent WordPress installations on one VPS when the sites are smaller, predictable and operated by the same team; keep their databases, database users and backups separate. Choose WordPress Multisite only when the sites are deliberately governed as one network and can share core files, plugins, themes and release decisions.

Consolidation reduces infrastructure cost and administration, but it increases the number of sites affected by a server failure or a bad change. The right design is the one whose failure domain, compatibility and recovery process match the sites’ value and growth—not a universal “sites per VPS” formula.

Start with the three WordPress hosting patterns
WordPress supports three broad ways to run multiple sites. The choice is architectural, not merely a hosting-plan setting.
One Multisite network
A Multisite network uses one WordPress installation and one network-level set of core files. WordPress describes it as “a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files” (WordPress Developer Resources). Network administrators can manage plugins and themes centrally, while individual sites retain their own media directories and content tables.

This model is intended for sites with common governance: for example, a game publisher’s regional sites, a school’s department sites, or a community whose subsites follow one release policy. It is not simply a cheaper name for independent hosting.
Several independent installations sharing one database
WordPress documents a pattern in which multiple installations have separate files but use one database (Installing Multiple WordPress Instances). It can simplify some infrastructure arrangements, but a shared database creates a larger administrative and security boundary than separate databases. Use distinct database users with only the permissions each installation needs.

Several independent installations with separate databases
Each site has its own WordPress files, database and database credentials. The sites can still share the same VPS operating system, web server and PHP runtime, but a site’s content and configuration are separated from its neighbors. WordPress’s hardening guidance recommends separate databases and users when hosting multiple blogs on one server (Hardening WordPress).
Compare the choices against the risks you actually have

When one VPS per site is the safer design
Unrelated owners or contractual boundaries
Client sites, separate business units and projects with different administrators should not be forced into one trust domain. A dedicated VPS lets you give each owner independent credentials, logs, maintenance windows and billing. A compromised plugin on one site is less likely to become a direct path into another site’s files or database.
Different software stacks
One site may require a newer PHP release, a custom web-server module or a plugin that conflicts with another site’s cache, image-processing or checkout code. Separate VPS environments allow those choices to coexist without holding every site to the same runtime.

High-value transactions or strict uptime objectives
Stores selling game keys, membership sites collecting payments and communities with contractual availability targets merit a smaller failure domain. A kernel update, exhausted disk or runaway import on another project should not take the high-value site offline.
Independent release and recovery schedules
Teams that deploy at different times need freedom to test and roll back without coordinating a network-wide change. A dedicated VPS also makes recovery-point and recovery-time objectives easier to define per site. The trade-off is operational overhead: every VPS needs its own patching, monitoring, firewall policy and tested backups.
When several separate installations on one VPS make sense
Use a common, predictable stack
Consolidation works best when the sites use the same operating-system family, web server, PHP branch and database engine, and when traffic is steady enough to plan capacity. Examples include several small gaming blogs, documentation sites or low-volume community pages managed by one team.
Keep the installations independent
Create a separate Unix user, document root, database and database user for every site. Give each database account access only to its own database, use unique table prefixes, and prevent one site’s writable directories from being executable by another site. Separate credentials do not make the VPS an impenetrable boundary, but they reduce accidental cross-site access and limit damage from routine mistakes.
Plan for noisy neighbors
A traffic spike, search-index rebuild, backup job or malicious request burst can consume CPU, memory, disk I/O or database connections for the whole VPS. Set per-site PHP worker and process limits, monitor database load and disk latency, and schedule heavy jobs outside peak periods. If one site repeatedly starves the others, moving that site to its own VPS is usually safer than endlessly tuning shared limits.

Back up each site separately
A single VPS snapshot is useful for disaster recovery, but it is not a substitute for per-site backups. Retain copies of each site’s files and database so you can restore one gaming community or campaign site without overwriting its neighbors. WordPress recommends regularly timed snapshots of files and databases as part of hardening practice (WordPress hardening guidance). Test restoration on an isolated location; an untested backup is only an assumption.
When WordPress Multisite is the right tool
Choose shared governance deliberately
Multisite is appropriate when one organization controls the network, users, themes and plugin policy. It can make a fleet of closely related sites easier to administer because core files and network-managed extensions are maintained centrally. Each site still has its own media directory and content tables, so content remains logically separated inside the network.
Understand what you give up
A network administrator’s decision can affect every site. A plugin update, theme change or core upgrade must be acceptable across the network, and a vulnerability in a network-enabled component can have network-wide consequences. Site owners generally cannot choose arbitrary versions independently.
Check the network prerequisites
WordPress lists additional requirements and cautions that Multisite may not fit sites needing strong interconnection, shared data or shared users (Before You Create A Network). Confirm that your hosting setup supports the required domain or subdomain arrangement, URL structure, rewrite rules, wildcard DNS where applicable, and administrative access before converting a live site.
Avoid Multisite for incompatible or separately owned sites
If one site needs a plugin that cannot run with the network’s PHP version, if owners require independent administrator access, or if each business has a different release and compliance policy, independent installations are a better fit. You can still host those installations on one VPS if the shared failure domain is acceptable.

How many WordPress sites can one VPS handle?
There is no universal sites-per-VPS number, minimum VPS size or traffic break-even published by the cited WordPress and AWS guidance. A site count without workload information is misleading: a lightweight brochure site and a busy WooCommerce catalog consume radically different resources.
AWS describes a single-server installation as “the simplest option for low traffic websites” and presents more advanced architectures as incremental availability and scalability improvements (Best Practices for WordPress on AWS). Treat that as an architectural starting point, not a capacity guarantee.
Measure the resources that determine capacity
- CPU: Watch sustained utilization and load during publishing, cron jobs, search indexing and traffic peaks.
- Memory: Include PHP workers, the database buffer pool, object caching and the operating system; swapping is a warning that the VPS is undersized.
- Storage and I/O: Track free space, write latency, media growth, temporary files and backup workloads.
- Database connections: Check connection counts and slow queries rather than assuming every site has the same query profile.
- Network and request rate: Observe concurrent requests, bandwidth and cache-hit ratios for each site.
- Recovery capacity: Ensure the VPS can create and restore backups without exhausting its disk or taking production services offline.
Leave headroom for bursts and maintenance. Add another site only after observing the existing workload under realistic peak conditions. If you cannot identify which site consumed the resources, your monitoring is not granular enough for safe consolidation.

Separate databases and credentials
For independent installations, separate databases and database users are the baseline containment measure. Use unique, long credentials; restrict each account to its own database; and store secrets outside publicly served directories where your deployment model permits. This follows WordPress’s recommendation for multiple blogs on one server.
Limit writable surfaces
WordPress needs writable locations for uploads and selected caches, not for every application file. Keep core and plugin files owned and writable only by the deployment process, restrict upload execution according to your web-server configuration, and remove abandoned plugins and themes.

Model the failure you are accepting
One VPS means one shared kernel, storage system and network path. A host outage, filesystem failure, exposed management interface or incorrect firewall rule can affect all sites. Separate VPSs reduce that blast radius but do not remove the need for backups and patching; a provider outage, stolen credential or vulnerable application can still affect an individual site.

Define recovery targets per site
Write down how much recent content each site can lose and how quickly it must return. A daily snapshot may be adequate for a low-traffic archive but not for a store or active gaming forum. Keep at least one backup copy outside the VPS and protect backup credentials separately from production credentials.
Test the complete restore path
- Provision an isolated restore target with a compatible PHP and database version.
- Restore the site’s database and files, then verify uploads, scheduled jobs, permalinks and administrator access.
- Run representative actions such as publishing a post, submitting a form or completing a test checkout.
- Record the elapsed time, missing dependencies and corrective steps.
- Repeat after major WordPress, plugin, PHP or operating-system changes.
Coordinate patching without creating downtime surprises
With one VPS per site, patch and reboot according to that site’s window. With consolidated independent installs, patch shared components in a staging environment and schedule a coordinated maintenance period. With Multisite, test every network site before changing shared core, themes or plugins.
A practical selection process
- List ownership and governance: If owners, administrators or release policies differ materially, start with separate installations; use separate VPSs when the trust boundary must be stronger.
- Inventory compatibility: Record each site’s PHP, database, plugin, theme, web-server and scheduled-job requirements. Any hard incompatibility rules out a single Multisite network.
- Classify business impact: Isolate payment, membership, contractual or high-reputation sites from low-risk projects when their recovery objectives differ.
- Estimate and measure load: Use observed CPU, memory, I/O, database and request metrics. Do not select a site count from a generic hosting chart.
- Design backups before migration: Create per-site exports, an off-server copy and a tested restoration procedure.
- Set a split trigger: Decide in advance that a site moves to its own VPS when it exhausts headroom, needs incompatible software, suffers repeated noisy-neighbor incidents or requires a different recovery target.
Patterns for common gaming-site portfolios
Several small editorial sites run by one team
Independent installations on one VPS are usually the balanced choice. They keep databases and content separate while allowing one operations team to patch the common stack. Add monitoring that identifies which site generated each process and query.
A network of regional or community subsites
Multisite can reduce repetitive administration when branding, plugins, themes and governance are intentionally shared. Establish a network-wide staging and rollback process before onboarding production sites.

A storefront, a high-traffic forum and experimental projects
Use separate VPSs for the storefront and forum if their uptime, security or scaling requirements differ. Place experiments together only when their failure cannot harm the revenue sites and they have independent backups.
Bottom line for your architecture
Choose separate VPSs for independence, incompatible stacks, high-value workloads and small failure domains. Choose multiple independent installations on one VPS for related, lower-risk sites managed by one team, with separate databases, users and tested per-site backups. Choose Multisite only when shared governance and shared code are intentional and acceptable to every site owner. Reassess as traffic, plugins, ownership and recovery requirements change; architecture should follow those facts rather than a fixed site-count rule.
