A realistic 2026 budget starts at about $201–$207 for a Home Assistant Green running all year without a cloud subscription. Add the optional Home Assistant Link annual plan and the first-year total is roughly $266–$272, before tax. Electricity is only a few dollars per year; hardware and the optional subscription determine almost all of the cost.

What you are paying for
Running Home Assistant yourself has four possible cost categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Controller hardware: the computer that runs Home Assistant, such as Home Assistant Green or a Raspberry Pi.
- Storage, case and power supply: these may be included in an appliance or must be purchased separately for a DIY build.
- Electricity: a small 24/7 computer uses little power, so this is usually the smallest expense.
- Optional cloud services and radio hardware: Home Assistant Link adds remote access and integrations, while Zigbee or Thread devices require a separate USB radio on a Green.
The Home Assistant software itself does not add a recurring license line to the documented totals. You can operate a local installation without buying Home Assistant Link; the subscription is for convenience and cloud features, not for basic local automation.
Home Assistant Green price in 2026
Home Assistant Green is the simplest purpose-built hardware option. Nabu Casa’s 2026 suggested retail price is $199 USD or €179. The price was raised from $99 at the device’s 2023 launch. Nabu Casa attributed the change to component costs, stating that “the component price of building a Home Assistant Green has nearly doubled since we started making the device.”
#1 Best Overall
- EASIEST WAY TO GET STARTED WITH HOME ASSISTANT: With Home Assistant already installed, it only requires plugging the included power supply and Ethernet cable to get started
- DESIGNED FOR THE HOME: The small, fanless, and silent design packs a quad-core processor, 32GB of storage, and 4GB of RAM
- ONE HUB TO CONTROL YOUR WHOLE HOME: Simplify your smart home with HA70. Built with official Home Assistant OS and a professional Zigbee coordinator, it brings local control, powerful automation, and seamless device management into one compact hub
- AUTOMATE EVERYTHING: Make all the devices in your home work in harmony - have your lights dim when you start watching a movie, or turn off your heat when you're away from home
- YOUR HOME, YOUR DATA: Your home's data will be kept in the home on your HomeAssistant. You can easily view, share, and export that data anywhere you want
The $199 USD suggestion excludes sales tax. The €179 figure includes applicable taxes under Nabu Casa’s stated pricing convention. A retailer can charge more or less than either suggested price, and European listings have shown substantial variation. Treat those numbers as a reference point rather than a guaranteed checkout total.
Green is an appliance: storage, enclosure and power hardware are integrated, so you do not need to price those parts individually. It does not include a built-in Zigbee or Thread radio. If your sensors, lights or plugs use either protocol, budget separately for a compatible USB coordinator; no verified universal retail price is established here, and prices vary by model and region.

Electricity: the small annual cost
Third-party measurements for Home Assistant Green report approximately 1.7 watts at idle and 3 watts under load. A Raspberry Pi 5 guide estimates about 2.7–3.0 watts at idle. Your result can change with USB devices, Ethernet activity, storage, cooling and (for a Pi) attached HDMI equipment.

The annual calculation is straightforward: 24 hours × 365 days equals 8,760 hours. Multiply the device’s wattage by those hours and divide by 1,000 to obtain kilowatt-hours (kWh).
| Device and measured point | Annual energy at 8,760 hours | Cost at $0.15/kWh | Cost at $0.30/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green, 1.7 W idle | 14.9 kWh | About $2.24 | About $4.47 |
| Green, 3 W load | 26.3 kWh | About $3.95 | About $7.89 |
| Raspberry Pi 5, 2.7 W idle | 23.7 kWh | About $3.55 | About $7.11 |
| Raspberry Pi 5, 3.0 W idle | 26.3 kWh | About $3.95 | About $7.89 |
The tariff range in the table is an assumption, not a universal rate. Replace it with the energy price on your bill, and use your device’s measured draw if you want a precise estimate. Even at the higher assumption, electricity remains a minor part of ownership cost.
DIY Raspberry Pi versus Green
A Raspberry Pi can run Home Assistant, but the complete cost is more than the board alone. A 2026 third-party comparison cited a ready-to-run Pi 4 setup at about €140, compared with €179 for Green. That is an indicative market figure, not an official price and not a guarantee for every country.

A Pi 5 build also needs an NVMe solid-state drive, a case and a 27-watt power supply. Once those parts are included, the guide concludes that the total is roughly comparable to a Green. Local component prices, availability and whether you already own any parts can move the result in either direction.
| Cost and capability | Home Assistant Green | DIY Raspberry Pi 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Indicative hardware position in 2026 | $199 suggested retail or €179 suggested retail | Roughly comparable after NVMe SSD, case and 27 W power supply; exact total depends on local prices |
| Storage and enclosure | Included in the appliance | Purchased separately |
| Power supply | Included with the appliance | 27 W supply required in the cited Pi 5 build |
| Typical idle draw cited | About 1.7 W | About 2.7–3.0 W |
| Zigbee/Thread radio | Not built in; USB radio is extra | Not built in; USB radio is extra |
Green’s financial advantage is therefore less about electricity and more about avoiding a parts hunt. A Pi can still make sense if you already own suitable storage, a case and a reliable power supply, or if you specifically want the flexibility of assembling and maintaining the system yourself.
Home Assistant Link: the optional recurring charge
Home Assistant Link (the service formerly called Home Assistant Cloud) costs $6.50 per month or $65 per year, before tax, with a 31-day free trial. The annual option is approximately two months cheaper than paying twelve monthly charges. Nabu Casa says the subscription name is scheduled to change from Cloud to Link on December 2, 2026; the company describes it as the same service.

Pricing depends on location, currency and billing period. The amounts above are US prices before tax. A community-reported European example was €7.50 per month or €75 per year including VAT, but your checkout price may differ. Check the local pricing page before subscribing. Listings that quote approximately $8 per month are not confirmed by the primary pricing information and may be outdated.
Link is not required for local automations or for operating Home Assistant on your home network. If you do not subscribe, remote access is still possible through a self-managed VPN, port forwarding combined with dynamic DNS, Cloudflare Tunnel or Tailscale. Those approaches require your own setup and maintenance; no comparative prices are established here.

The following totals combine the 2026 Green suggested price, the electricity assumptions above and, where selected, the annual Link plan. They exclude sales tax on the US figures, shipping, retailer markups and any radio or other accessories.
Best Value
- Only mount plastic mount is included. Home assistant device is not included.
- Made In USA from High Quality Materials.
- Secure Mounting — Uses #6 flat head screws (Not Included) for a stable, reliable installation.
- Easy Access Ports: Design ensures all bottom ports are fully accessible for power, network, and peripheral connections.
- Cooling-Friendly Design: Open structure allows airflow around cooling fins to help maintain optimal operating temperature.
| Scenario | Hardware | Subscription in year one | Estimated electricity | First-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green, local-only operation | $199 | $0 | About $2–$8 | About $201–$207 |
| Green with Link annual plan | $199 | $65 before tax | About $2–$8 | About $266–$272 before tax |
| Pi 5 DIY | Depends on Pi, NVMe SSD, case and 27 W supply; cited guidance puts it roughly near Green once complete | $0 or $65 before tax, if Link is chosen | About $4–$8 under the cited idle assumptions | Not a fixed figure; local component prices determine it |
For a multi-year view, the Green hardware is largely a one-time purchase. Electricity adds only a few dollars annually, while Link continues to add its selected monthly or annual fee. A radio, replacement storage or other accessory is a separate one-time expense.
How to build an accurate personal budget
- Choose the host. Start with the Green suggested price in your currency, or list every Pi component rather than pricing only the board.
- Check tax and delivery. The US Green figure excludes tax, the euro suggestion includes applicable taxes, and retailers may apply their own markup or shipping.
- List protocol hardware. Add a USB Zigbee or Thread coordinator if your devices need one. Green has no radio integrated into the appliance.
- Decide on remote access. Add $65 per year before tax for Link, or choose a self-managed method and account for your own time and maintenance.
- Calculate electricity from your tariff. Multiply watts by 8,760 and divide by 1,000, then multiply by your price per kWh. Use measured watts when peripherals are connected.
- Separate first-year and renewal costs. Hardware and accessories are generally upfront; Link and electricity recur each year.
Which option fits which priority?
Choose Green for predictable setup
Green minimizes component decisions and provides a clear appliance price. It is the straightforward choice when you want to install Home Assistant without sourcing an SSD, case and power supply separately. Remember to reserve a separate budget for a Zigbee or Thread USB radio if required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a Pi when you already own parts or want control
A DIY Pi can be economical when compatible hardware is already on hand. Buying every required part at 2026 prices, however, removes most of the historical savings. Storage quality, cooling and power reliability also become your responsibility.
Add Link when convenience is worth the renewal fee
Link is aimed at users who value a supported remote connection, off-site backups, voice-assistant integration and cloud speech processing. If you are comfortable maintaining your own secure remote-access path and backups, local-only operation avoids that recurring charge.
Important qualifications before you buy
- Prices are time-sensitive. The Green price changed in January 2026, and the announcement was updated April 24, 2026. Recheck the seller before ordering.
- Currency treatment differs. The suggested US price excludes tax, while the euro suggestion includes applicable taxes. Your region’s final amount can therefore look different even before shipping.
- Retail prices are not uniform. Community reports document wide European spreads, so compare several legitimate sellers.
- Power measurements are estimates. Idle and load figures come from third-party measurements; USB accessories, Ethernet, HDMI and storage activity alter consumption.
- No average-household statistic is available. There is no independent published survey establishing a typical household’s total Home Assistant cost, so the scenarios above are component-based estimates rather than an industry average.
Bottom line for 2026
Budget about two hundred dollars for a Green-based local installation in its first year, with only a few dollars of that amount going to electricity. The optional Link plan is the main recurring expense at $65 per year before tax. A DIY Raspberry Pi remains viable, but after adding NVMe storage, a case and a 27 W power supply, it generally costs about the same as Green unless you already own some of those parts.
