Exploring early is not automatically a mistake—but in ELDEN RING, open-world access does not mean every region is equally safe. Bandai Namco says players can travel anywhere while warning that some zones contain much deadlier enemies. The useful question is not whether to explore, but when to push forward, retreat, or return stronger.
ELDEN RING: You can go anywhere, but not everywhere is equally safe
Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview describes the tension directly: “While the game is open world, and you certainly can go anywhere, you’ll quickly discover enemies in some zones are much deadlier than others.” That makes early exploration a choice with consequences, rather than a locked route or a promise that every destination is balanced for a new character. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview presents Limgrave, Liurnia of the Lakes, and Caelid as a general early-game progression. Treat that as a suggested route, not a mandatory sequence.
When to press on—and when to leave
If an enemy or boss overwhelms you, you do not have to turn the encounter into a repeated attempt loop. The publisher says it is acceptable to run away from a boss that is too difficult and return later, or to move through an area without fighting. Those options make exploration useful even when combat is not yet manageable: you can learn the layout, find a route, or decide the risk is not worth taking right now.
How to make a return trip easier
Bandai Namco Europe’s early-game tips recommend finding map fragments, placing markers to remember monsters that are too powerful for now, and spending runes to level up at a Site of Grace. Together, these tools turn retreat into a plan: mark a threat, continue somewhere more manageable, and revisit it after you have made progress.

The Elder Scrolls Online: broad zone access without the same under-leveling concern
Not every open-world game uses dangerous regions to create the same early-game pressure. ZeniMax Online Studios’ new-player guide for The Elder Scrolls Online says its zones have no level caps and that players can travel among them without worrying about being under-powered for an area. That is a contrasting approach to the zone danger described for ELDEN RING: exploration can be less about judging whether your character is ready for a region and more about choosing where you want to go.
Skyrim: adjust difficulty if combat is the obstacle
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers a different kind of flexibility. Bethesda Support explains that the difficulty setting changes the damage the player deals and takes. If an early encounter is making exploration feel like a grind, changing that setting is an option; it alters combat difficulty rather than requiring you to follow a particular route. See Bethesda’s Skyrim difficulty guidance for the setting’s stated effect.

Which approach suits you?
| Game | What the official guidance says about early exploration | Ways to handle difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| ELDEN RING | Players can go anywhere, but enemies in some zones are much deadlier; Limgrave → Liurnia of the Lakes → Caelid is a general suggested route, not a required order. Bandai Namco | Run from a difficult boss, bypass fights, use markers for threats, find map fragments, and spend runes to level up at a Site of Grace. Bandai Namco Europe |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | Zones have no level caps; the guide says players can travel among them without worrying about being under-powered for an area. ZeniMax Online Studios | The cited guide establishes broad zone access; it does not state a separate difficulty-setting option. |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | The cited support article does not characterize zone-by-zone level scaling or a recommended early route. | Difficulty changes how much damage the player deals and takes. Bethesda Support |
If you enjoy risk, exploration, and deciding when to disengage, ELDEN RING makes early travel a meaningful judgment call. If you would rather move among zones without worrying that you are under-powered for one, The Elder Scrolls Online is the clearer fit according to its new-player guide. If you want a direct combat adjustment, Skyrim provides one through its difficulty setting.
