For an open-world RPG built around a character-focused story, start with Dragon Age: Inquisition. If your priority is companions with clearly documented personal stories and reactions to your choices—and you are open to a party-based rather than explicitly open-world game—consider Baldur’s Gate 3. These are different kinds of recommendations, not proof that either companion system is objectively better than Skyrim’s.
Which game should you choose?
- Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want an expansive open-world structure alongside a story focused on complex characters and consequential decisions. BioWare’s official game page describes it in those terms.
- Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if companion backstories, motivations, and responses to your choices matter more than having an explicitly open-world format. The distinction matters: the available publisher descriptions support an open-world recommendation for Inquisition and a party-based, companion-reactivity recommendation for Baldur’s Gate 3. They do not establish a head-to-head verdict against Skyrim.
Dragon Age: Inquisition: open-world exploration with a character-centered story
Inquisition is the closer fit if “open-world RPG” is the deciding part of the request. BioWare describes it as an expansive, story-driven open-world game, highlighting complex characters and difficult decisions. That makes it a defensible pick for players who want exploration and a broad narrative in the same game.
The cited official description does not establish specific companion mechanics such as approval systems, personal quests, recruitment breadth, or party banter. So this recommendation is about the game’s stated world structure and character-focused framing, not a claim that its companions outperform Skyrim’s in any particular system.

Baldur’s Gate 3: a party-based choice for companion reactivity
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the stronger fit when the companion part of the request is paramount. Larian says players can recruit Origin characters to fight alongside them, and that each has a moral compass and reacts to player choices. Its Origin Characters support page further describes their personal backstories, quests, and motivations, and explains that their experiences and attitudes shape their opinions of the player’s decisions.
This is a party-based RPG recommendation, not an open-world label: Larian’s cited description calls it party-based, while the available source does not call it open-world. Pick it if you are willing to trade the specific open-world framing for an official emphasis on companion histories and reactions.

How to decide if you want companions you can choose
Players asking for RPGs with companions they can choose to bring along, or companions with distinct abilities and skills, may be looking for different things. The official descriptions cited here directly support a choice between Inquisition’s open-world story framing and Baldur’s Gate 3’s party structure and reactive Origin characters. They do not provide a like-for-like account of companion abilities, combat control, romance, or banter across these games and Skyrim, so those are not reliable grounds for ranking them here.
In short, begin with Dragon Age: Inquisition when the open-world structure is non-negotiable; consider Baldur’s Gate 3 when your main goal is a party whose members bring personal stories and react to your decisions.
