Open-World RPGs With Deep Character Builds: What the Evidence Supports

Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 have documented build systems suited to different play styles. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers extensive class options, but is a separate open-world comparison.

The strongest verified matches here are Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077: both offer build choices that can change how you approach play, and both have official sources documenting those systems. Baldur’s Gate 3 has especially broad class and multiclass options, but it is better treated as a separate comparison: its official description does not establish it as an open-world game. There is no consistent published measure that can rank these games’ build depth, so the useful question is what you can combine, how choices alter play, and what kind of world and combat you want.

How to judge build depth in an open-world RPG

“Deepest” is a judgment, not a standardized score. A large skill tree can offer breadth without changing moment-to-moment play; a smaller set of choices can be meaningful if it changes combat range, stealth, defenses, or how you explore. Compare games across these practical dimensions:

  • Build ingredients: attributes, skills, perks, classes, equipment, weapons, magic, and cyberware.
  • Impact on play: whether choices enable a different approach—such as close combat, ranged attacks, stealth, or hacking—or mainly adjust numerical output.
  • Flexibility: how readily you can revise a build and experiment. Respec rules and costs vary, so check current game-specific documentation before relying on them.
  • How options are discovered: through exploration, leveling, quests, or equipment.
  • World structure and combat: a seamless open world is not the same as large connected regions; action, first-person, and turn-based combat also ask different things of the player.

These are comparison criteria, not a published scoring system. Recommendation lists can help surface candidates, but they do not establish that one game has deeper builds than another.

Open-world RPGs with directly documented build systems

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is the clearest match to the open-world part of this topic among the games documented here. Bandai Namco describes it as an open-world action RPG and points to weapons, magical abilities, and skills found in the world as ways to define a playstyle. That ties build-making to exploration as well as equipment and combat choices.

  • DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.

It is a strong fit if you want an action RPG where your loadout and abilities shape how you tackle encounters. The official description establishes variety in weapons, magic, and skills; it does not provide a comparable score or prove that its system is deeper than the alternatives below.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0 announcement documents redesigned skill trees and perks, new skills, and changes to cyberware progression. The publisher also offers an official Cyberpunk 2077 Build Planner for planning and theorycrafting builds.

Pericle Gathering Darkness (Core Game) Tabletop Roleplaying App-Assisted Game Master, Open Hero Creation System with 100+ Hours of Adventure, 1 to 4 Players, for Ages 13 and Up
  • No Game Master Required: Play solo or with friends, perfect for when your full gaming group isn't available.
  • Loremaster Software Engine: Experience the world of Pericle through Loremaster, which presents the Gathering Darkness campaign through rich narratives, animated cutscenes, breathtaking art, and an original soundtrack.
  • Choose Your Path: The world is rich with history, culture, factions, politics, religions, and NPCs. Most importantly, Loremaster’s branching storylines change according to player choice - your decisions shape the world of Pericle!
  • Hero Creation: Classless creation system allows you to build unique characters. Change heroes or builds mid-campaign. 5 pre-generated heroes available for beginners.
  • Tabletop Combat: Strategic mechanics for tactical combat with enemies controlled by Loremaster. Easy setup and takedown.

The publisher says the new abilities open approaches to “combat, stealth, hacking, and more.” That makes the game a promising choice if you want build planning to support different ways of handling situations, rather than only changing damage numbers. The cited Update 2.0 announcement establishes what that update changed; it should not be mistaken for a complete account of every later balance or content change.

A build-rich RPG that is not established here as open-world

Baldur’s Gate 3

Larian Studios’ Community Update #21 lists 12 classes, 46 subclasses, and multiclassing. Those are substantial ingredients for character experimentation, but the class and subclass counts do not measure depth in a way that can be compared directly with another game’s perks or abilities.

Keep the world-structure distinction in view: the official description calls Baldur’s Gate 3 an RPG set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, while the cited material does not establish it as an open-world game. It is useful as a build-focused alternative if that distinction is acceptable, not as a verified entry in an open-world ranking.

Choosing the right fit

  • Choose Elden Ring if you want an explicitly open-world action RPG and build choices around weapons, magic, and skills.
  • Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you are drawn to a documented combination of redesigned skill trees, perks, cyberware progression, and a build planner.
  • Consider Baldur’s Gate 3 separately if class combinations are a priority and a region-based or otherwise non-open-world structure is not a deal-breaker.

A reader looking for “good role-playing, combat, an open world, and character creation/customization” is asking for several things at once. Decide which matters most—world structure, combat style, or the freedom to test different builds—before treating any single game as the universal winner. A longer list of nine would require equally concrete, title-specific evidence for each game’s world structure and build mechanics; recommendation roundups alone are not enough to support that ranking.
