opencv_core320.dll is an OpenCV 3.2.0 application library, not a normal Windows component. When opencv_core320.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the program that installed it and repair that program.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, record:

  • The program or game named in the error-window title
  • The full path shown in the error
  • Whether the problem occurs at Windows sign-in, when launching one app, or after an update
  • Whether the app is from the Microsoft Store, a game launcher, a conventional desktop installer, or your own Visual Studio build
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Any recent antivirus quarantine, cleanup utility, Windows update, application update, or file move

Typical messages include:

The program can't start because opencv_core320.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

You may also see:

The code execution cannot proceed because opencv_core320.dll was not found.

A file that exists but is damaged or built for the wrong architecture can instead produce a “Bad Image” message. That usually means the DLL is corrupt, incompatible with the executable, or missing one of its own dependencies.

The executable path matters more than the DLL filename. Several unrelated products can privately ship OpenCV files, including photo software, mapping tools, packaged applications, games, and custom OpenCV programs.

The file is normally installed with the application that needs it. Windows does not provide one universal copy for every program, and there is no single replacement DLL that is guaranteed to work with all applications.

A program may also require companion files such as:

  • opencv_imgproc320.dll
  • opencv_imgcodecs320.dll
  • opencv_highgui320.dll
  • opencv_world320.dll

The exact files depend on how the application was built. Windows normally searches the application or package location before general system locations, so the matching private copy belongs with the application.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the application

This is the fastest and most likely solution because it restores the complete set of files the application was designed to use.

For a game launcher

  1. Open the launcher that installed the game.
  2. Open your library.
  3. Select the affected game.
  4. Open its settings, properties, or manage menu.
  5. Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
  6. Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
  7. Start the game again from the launcher.

If the launcher reports that files were replaced, the missing DLL was probably deleted or damaged. If the error remains, restart Windows and run the verification again. An antivirus program may be removing the file immediately after repair.

For a conventional desktop program

  1. Press Windows and type Control Panel.
  2. Open Programs and Features.
  3. Select the program named by the error.
  4. Choose Repair if that option is available.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.
  6. Restart the program.

If Repair is not offered, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Use the same product edition and architecture where the installer provides a choice.

Do not install a newer OpenCV DLL under the old filename. A newer library can have different interfaces, dependencies, or build settings and may cause another startup error.

Fix 2: Repair a Microsoft Store application

If the executable is inside a protected WindowsApps folder, do not take ownership of that folder or replace files manually. Repair the package through Windows.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Resetting can remove the app’s local settings or stored data, so use it after Repair and back up anything the application stores locally.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Apps → Apps & features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair, then test the app.
  6. Use Reset only if Repair fails.

You can also uninstall and reinstall the application through Microsoft Store. This is preferable to copying a DLL into a protected package directory.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an OpenCV DLL after an update, cleanup, or changed detection rule. A detection does not automatically prove that the file is safe or malicious, so check its origin first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security → Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review entries related to the affected application or opencv_core320.dll.
  6. Confirm that the application came from its official installer or a trusted store.
  7. Restore or allow the file only when its provenance is clear.
  8. Repair or verify the application again.

If Defender or another security product removes the file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Update the application, check the vendor’s security guidance, and contact the vendor if a legitimate installation is being detected. Add an exclusion only when the application publisher recommends it and you understand the risk.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and build compatibility

A DLL can be present and still fail to load.

The application and OpenCV binaries must use compatible architectures:

  • A 32-bit application needs 32-bit OpenCV binaries.
  • A 64-bit application needs 64-bit OpenCV binaries.
  • A Release build normally uses the non-debug filename.
  • A Debug build may require a d-suffixed file such as opencv_core320d.dll.

The filename alone does not prove whether a particular copy is 32-bit or 64-bit. The standard OpenCV 3.2 Windows package and custom application builds may differ.

If this is a developer-built program:

  1. Check the project’s Configuration Manager in Visual Studio.
  2. Note whether the active target is x86, x64, or another configuration.
  3. Use the matching OpenCV build.
  4. Place the required DLLs beside the program’s .exe during development, or configure the documented DLL search path.
  5. Confirm that all required companion OpenCV files are present.
  6. Rebuild the application and test it outside Visual Studio if appropriate.

Do not substitute opencv_world320.dll for opencv_core320.dll unless the application was specifically built to use that file. Do not use a debug DLL in a Release installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair a missing Microsoft Visual C++ dependency

Sometimes the visible error names opencv_core320.dll, but the underlying failure is a dependency used by that DLL. Common examples include:

  • MSVCP140.dll
  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • api-ms-win-crt-*.dll

In that situation, install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable required by the application. Match its architecture to the application. On 64-bit Windows, both x86 and x64 redistributables may be needed for different programs.

After installing the runtime:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the application’s repair or file verification process.
  3. Launch the application again.

The Visual C++ package repairs a separate runtime dependency. It does not recreate an application-owned opencv_core320.dll.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when several Windows components or unrelated programs are failing, not as the first response to one missing third-party DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command normally restores a private OpenCV DLL installed by an application. If the commands report repairs, test other Windows functions as well as the original program.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, while reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates

Windows updates can resolve operating-system compatibility and runtime problems, although they will not normally supply opencv_core320.dll.

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Test the application again.

If only one program fails, return to that program’s installer or launcher after updating Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall relevant drivers

Drivers are not a normal source for opencv_core320.dll, but camera, graphics, capture, and imaging applications can also fail when their hardware drivers are damaged or incompatible.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Display adapters, or Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

For a clean driver repair, download the driver from the computer, GPU, camera, or capture-device manufacturer. Avoid replacing OpenCV files as a substitute for a driver update.

When hunting through multiple hardware pages and comparing driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but it is not a replacement for repairing the application that owns opencv_core320.dll.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an installation, cleanup operation, driver change, or update and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. It cannot help if no restore point predates the problem, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application.

Do not download the DLL from a random site

Avoid DLL download sites websites, generic driver-updater advertisements, and instructions telling you to copy this file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

That approach can provide:

  • The wrong OpenCV version
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A debug build instead of a Release build
  • A corrupt or modified file
  • Malware
  • A file that still lacks its companion DLLs or runtime dependencies

Use the affected application’s official installer, launcher, Microsoft Store package, or the official OpenCV developer release when building your own program. The DLL search path is part of the application’s deployment design, so putting a private library in a global Windows folder can create conflicts and still fail to solve the original problem.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

regsvr32 is intended for registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point. opencv_core320.dll is a runtime library, not normally a registration DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running:

regsvr32 opencv_core320.dll

will commonly produce an error that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. It does not repair a missing, corrupt, or incompatible OpenCV installation.

If the error remains

Collect these details before contacting the application developer:

  • Application and publisher name
  • Executable name and full path
  • Full error text and any status code
  • Path of the opencv_core320.dll being loaded
  • Whether the application is x86 or x64
  • Whether the file is missing, quarantined, or present
  • Recent updates, cleanup operations, or driver changes
  • File properties and digital-signature information
  • Whether repair or reinstall restores the file temporarily

If reinstalling restores the DLL and it disappears again, investigate antivirus actions, disk errors, installer permissions, and the Windows user profile. Testing the application from a new Windows profile can reveal profile-specific corruption. For developer builds, a dependency-analysis tool can identify whether a Visual C++ runtime or another OpenCV companion library is the actual missing dependency.

FAQ

Is opencv_core320.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an OpenCV 3.2 application DLL normally supplied by the program that needs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download one copy that works for every program?

No. Applications can use different OpenCV builds, architectures, companion files, and runtime dependencies. Repair the calling application instead.

Is the file always 32-bit or always 64-bit?

No. The filename does not establish bitness. Match the DLL to the application and its build configuration.

Will installing Visual C++ fix it?

Only if the reported missing file is a Visual C++ dependency. It does not restore opencv_core320.dll itself.

Should I run SFC first?

Not usually. For a single application error, verify or reinstall that application first. Use DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is suspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the correct first step?

Read the error title and executable path, identify the parent application, then use its launcher verification, Repair option, or official reinstall.
