The sample is a routed TUN VPN that listens on UDP 1194 and allocates tunnel addresses from 10.8.0.0/24. A complete deployment has two matching parts: a server configuration that creates the tunnel and advertises routes, and a client profile that names the public endpoint and authenticates with that server.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This guide gives a working configuration shape, explains what each directive does, and shows how to route a home LAN or a network behind a client. Replace every example hostname, certificate path and subnet with values that fit your host operating system and topology.

What the sample configuration creates
OpenVPN’s official guide calls its sample server file “an ideal starting point for an OpenVPN server configuration.” It uses a routed Layer-3 TUN interface rather than an Ethernet bridge. The server helper then expands into TLS server mode, tunnel addressing, an address-allocation pool and routes for the VPN network.
- Transport: UDP on port 1194 by default.
- VPN network:
10.8.0.0/24, providing tunnel addresses such as10.8.0.1for the server and addresses from the remaining pool for clients. - Interface:
dev tun, which routes IP traffic rather than bridging broadcasts. - Authentication: a certificate authority (CA), a server certificate and key, a client certificate and key, plus a shared
tls-cryptkey in this example.
The sample does not automatically make your physical LAN reachable. IP forwarding, firewall rules and (where required) NAT are host- and network-specific tasks that you must implement outside the OpenVPN directives.

Prepare the networks and prerequisites
Choose non-overlapping address ranges
Keep the VPN pool separate from every physical LAN and from every network located behind a client. For example, if the server’s home LAN is 192.168.1.0/24, using 10.8.0.0/24 for the VPN is clear. A client site must not also use 10.8.0.0/24 or the same subnet as the server LAN; overlapping ranges make route selection ambiguous and can send packets to the wrong interface.
Collect the files and access details
- A CA certificate (
ca.crt). - A server certificate and private key (
server.crtandserver.key). - One certificate and private key per client, such as
client1.crtandclient1.key. - A matching
tls-crypt.keyfile if you use the directive shown below. - The server’s public DNS name or public IP address.
- The UDP port forwarded from an upstream NAT gateway to the OpenVPN host, if the server is not directly on the Internet.
Store private keys with permissions that prevent ordinary users from reading them. The exact package names, certificate-generation commands, service unit and firewall syntax differ by operating system, so adapt those portions to your distribution rather than copying a Linux-specific command into another platform.

Client profile example
Each client needs a profile that points to the server’s public endpoint and contains credentials issued by the same CA. The remote hostname must resolve from the client’s network, and the port must be reachable through any intervening NAT or firewall.

What to change before importing
- Replace
vpn.example.comwith your public DNS name or address. If your public address changes, use a DNS name that you keep updated. - Use the externally forwarded port, not merely the port number on the server’s private interface.
- Place the CA certificate, this client’s certificate and private key, and the matching
tls-cryptkey where the profile can read them. Some clients support embedding these files in the profile; follow that client’s documented syntax if you choose to embed them. - Import the profile into the OpenVPN client and connect. A successful session should create a TUN interface and assign an address from the VPN pool.
resolv-retry infinite keeps retrying name resolution, while nobind allows the client to choose its local source port. remote-cert-tls server makes the client require a certificate with the server identity usage, helping prevent an accidental connection to a peer certificate intended for a client.
Route a LAN behind the OpenVPN server
For a LAN physically attached to the VPN server, advertise the LAN route to clients and ensure the server can forward packets between the TUN interface and the LAN interface.

- Replace the example push directive with the real LAN network and mask, such as
push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0". - Enable IPv4 forwarding in the server operating system.
- Permit forwarding in the host firewall from the VPN interface to the LAN interface and allow return traffic.
- Choose a return-path design. Add a route on the LAN’s router back to
10.8.0.0/24through the VPN server, or apply source NAT on the VPN server if you cannot change that router. NAT is a policy choice: it simplifies return routing but hides the original VPN-client address from LAN hosts. - Restart or reload OpenVPN using the service mechanism for your OS, reconnect a client and test a known LAN address.
The push "route ..." line affects client route tables only; it does not enable kernel forwarding or open a firewall. Those three layers—client route, server forwarding and a valid return route—must all be correct.
Route a subnet located behind one client
A site-to-site arrangement needs two route statements with different scopes. The main server configuration tells the server where to send the destination; the per-client file tells OpenVPN which connected client owns that destination.
1. Create the client-specific file
Enable client-config-dir /etc/openvpn/ccd in the server configuration. Create a file whose name matches the client certificate’s common name, for example /etc/openvpn/ccd/branch1. Put the client-owned route inside it:

iroute 192.168.50.0 255.255.255.0
iroute is OpenVPN’s internal route: it associates the subnet with that particular VPN client.
2. Add the main server route
In the main server configuration, add the same destination as a normal route:
route 192.168.50.0 255.255.255.0
The normal route installs the destination in the server’s routing view; the matching iroute selects the connected client as the next hop. For clients that need to reach that branch network, push the route as well, for example push "route 192.168.50.0 255.255.255.0".

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
3. Make the branch network return traffic
Enable forwarding on the branch client’s gateway and add a route on the branch LAN router back to 10.8.0.0/24 through that gateway. If you cannot add a route, source NAT at the branch gateway can provide return connectivity at the cost of hiding individual VPN-client addresses.
Topology and configuration choices
| Decision | Recommended default | When to choose the alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Topology | subnet, with conventional masks |
Use documented net30 compatibility behavior only when an older Windows OpenVPN 2.0.9 client must connect; test client addressing before deployment. |
| Transport | UDP | Consider TCP only when a constrained network blocks or mishandles UDP. TCP-over-TCP can interact poorly with loss and congestion, so it is not a general performance upgrade. |
| Address allocation | Dynamic addresses from the 10.8.0.0/24 pool |
Use a CCD file and ifconfig-push when a particular client must retain a predictable VPN address. |
| Traffic scope | Selected routes, such as a home LAN | Use a full-tunnel design only when you intentionally push a default route and have planned Internet egress, DNS behavior and bandwidth. |
| Exposure | VPN-only access to explicitly routed networks | Add LAN routes and forwarding rules when remote users must reach internal subnets; do not assume a connected tunnel grants LAN access. |
Static address example with ifconfig-push
Inside a client’s CCD file, assign a fixed address appropriate to the selected topology. For subnet topology, the directive is commonly written as:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11ifconfig-push 10.8.0.10 255.255.255.0
Reserve that address so it is not also handed to a dynamically allocated client. Keep each CCD filename aligned with the certificate identity, and document the assignment so a certificate replacement does not silently change ownership.
Firewall, NAT and service checks
- Allow inbound UDP 1194 (or your chosen port) at the public firewall and forward it to the OpenVPN host when a NAT gateway is present.
- Allow the OpenVPN process to create and use the TUN device.
- Allow forwarding between TUN and each explicitly approved LAN interface.
- Permit established and related return traffic.
- Provide a return route for
10.8.0.0/24, or use source NAT where routing changes are impossible. - Keep private keys readable only by the service account or administrator.
After starting the service, inspect its log for certificate verification, bind errors and route-installation failures. Confirm that the server is listening on the intended local address and port, then test from a network outside the server’s LAN; testing only from inside can conceal a missing port-forward rule.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| No connection attempt reaches the server | Wrong public address, blocked UDP or missing NAT forward | Verify DNS resolution from the client, the external port, upstream forwarding and perimeter firewall logs. |
| TLS or certificate error | Wrong CA, mismatched certificate/key, expired certificate or incorrect server identity | Compare the files distributed to that client, confirm the private key matches its certificate and retain remote-cert-tls server. |
| VPN connects but LAN hosts time out | Missing pushed route, disabled forwarding, firewall denial or absent return route | Inspect the client route table, server forwarding policy and the LAN router’s route to 10.8.0.0/24. |
| Branch subnet is unreachable | Missing pair of route and iroute statements, wrong CCD filename or branch gateway not forwarding |
Check that the CCD filename equals the certificate identity and that both sides use the same destination and mask. |
| Unexpected or duplicate routes | Overlapping VPN, LAN or client subnets | Renumber one network so every routed destination is unique. |
| Old Windows client fails after enabling subnet topology | Client does not support the selected topology | Confirm the client version; if legacy compatibility is mandatory, evaluate documented net30 behavior and test it separately. |
Deployment checklist
- Start from the official sample server and client files.
- Select a VPN pool that overlaps neither the server LAN nor any client LAN.
- Issue and protect the CA, server and client credentials, plus the shared TLS-crypt key.
- Set the public endpoint and reachable forwarded port in every client profile.
- Choose
topology subnetunless a documented legacy requirement dictates otherwise. - Push only the LAN routes clients should use.
- For a subnet behind a client, pair the server’s
routewith that client’s CCDiroute. - Enable forwarding, configure firewall policy and establish a return route or deliberate NAT.
- Test from an external network, then test each allowed LAN and branch destination.
- Record certificate identities, static addresses, subnet ownership and the recovery procedure for key rotation.
