Choose KVM for most new VPS deployments. It gives you an independent guest operating system and kernel, so it is the safer choice for custom kernels, kernel modules, Windows, unusual Linux distributions, and workloads that need a stronger virtual-machine boundary. Choose OpenVZ when you are running a Linux-compatible service, do not need kernel control, and value low overhead, rapid provisioning, and high container density.
That is a technology recommendation, not a guarantee about a particular host. A well-operated OpenVZ plan with firm CPU and memory limits can outperform an oversubscribed KVM plan. Compare the provider’s resource policy, storage, backups, image support, support quality, and migration process before treating the virtualization label as decisive.

OpenVZ and KVM solve the same broad problem—putting isolated workloads on one physical server—but they do it at different layers.
- OpenVZ containers share the host’s Linux kernel. Each container has an isolated user space, processes, filesystem view, networking, and resource limits, but it does not boot an independent kernel.
- KVM virtual machines emulate a complete computer through hardware-assisted virtualization. The guest boots its own operating system and kernel, separate from the host and from other guests.
For a game server or web service that runs comfortably on the host kernel, OpenVZ can provide excellent density and quick administration. For a Windows game server, a custom Linux kernel, a kernel module, nested virtualization, or software that expects full machine control, use KVM.

No authoritative, dated cross-platform benchmark establishes a universal performance winner. CPU model, storage latency, memory pressure, network path, host contention, and the provider’s oversubscription policy usually matter more than the name on the virtualization layer.
How OpenVZ and KVM work
OpenVZ: operating-system-level virtualization
OpenVZ creates multiple isolated execution environments inside one Linux kernel. Its introductory documentation describes the model plainly: different environments can run different Linux distributions, but all operate under the same kernel.
Namespaces separate process IDs, mounts, networking, IPC objects, and other views of the system. Cgroups account for and limit CPU, memory, disk, and other resources. OpenVZ documentation also describes filesystem, process, IPC, and sysctl isolation. To an administrator, a container can look like a small server with its own root filesystem and init process, but the kernel remains shared.
The shared kernel is OpenVZ’s defining advantage and its defining constraint. There is no virtual hardware to initialize and no second kernel to boot, so startup and many management operations are lightweight. The same arrangement means a container cannot independently select a kernel version, load arbitrary kernel modules, or change kernel behavior that the host has not made available.
KVM: a hardware-virtualized machine
KVM uses the Linux kernel’s /dev/kvm virtualization interface, normally with a user-space machine emulator such as QEMU. The host supplies CPU virtualization extensions and device handling while each guest receives virtual CPUs, memory, disks, and network devices.
A KVM guest contains a complete operating system and its own kernel. You can install a different Linux release from the host, replace the guest kernel, configure low-level modules, or install an operating system that could not run under the host’s Linux kernel. Windows is the obvious example, but the same principle applies to specialized Linux builds and appliances.
The extra machine boundary has costs: memory is needed for the guest kernel and virtual devices, and storage and device operations pass through additional layers. Those costs are generally modest on modern hardware, but their practical impact depends on the workload and the host configuration.
OpenVZ vs KVM at a glance
| Decision area | OpenVZ container | KVM virtual machine |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel | Shares the host Linux kernel; no independent kernel boot | Runs an independent guest operating-system kernel |
| Operating systems | Linux userlands compatible with the host kernel | Broad guest-OS choice, including independent Linux kernels and Windows |
| Kernel modules | Only modules enabled and exposed by the host | Guest can use its own supported modules and kernel configuration |
| Isolation boundary | Namespaces, cgroups, and related kernel controls | Container-style controls inside a hardware-virtualized VM boundary |
| Virtualization overhead | OpenVZ documentation reports approximately 1–2% of CPU resources for its virtualization layer; this is not a universal benchmark | Not stated as a single comparable figure; depends on hardware, devices, storage, and configuration |
| Startup and provisioning | Usually lightweight because no guest kernel boots | Boots a complete virtual machine and guest operating system |
| Live migration | Supported when the provider’s network, CPU, subnet, and storage topology meet the requirements | Possible with provider-specific tooling and compatible images; exact requirements vary |
| Best fit | Dense, Linux-compatible services with no kernel-level requirements | Custom kernels, modules, Windows, broader compatibility, and a separate guest-kernel boundary |
Which is faster?
OpenVZ has the lower theoretical virtualization overhead because containers do not duplicate a guest kernel or emulate a complete machine. OpenVZ’s feature documentation reports that its single-kernel implementation uses approximately 1–2% of CPU resources for the virtualization layer. The source does not state a publication year, and the figure describes the container layer rather than a universal comparison with every KVM setup.

KVM performs additional work for guest memory management and virtual devices. That can matter in a CPU-bound or I/O-sensitive workload, especially when the host is heavily oversubscribed. It does not automatically make KVM slow. A KVM guest on a lightly loaded host with fast local storage can feel more responsive than an OpenVZ container competing for aggressively capped or oversold resources.

- Watch latency and packet loss from the regions where players connect.
- Check disk latency during world saves, map generation, updates, and log rotation.
- Observe memory pressure when the server loads mods, plugins, or large maps.
- Confirm whether the plan’s CPU allowance is a hard reservation, a share, or a burst limit.
Two plans using the same virtualization technology can produce very different results if one has faster disks, a newer CPU, better peering, or stricter limits on neighboring tenants.
Compatibility: the question that usually decides the purchase
When OpenVZ is compatible
OpenVZ is suitable when the application runs in a supported Linux userland and does not require control of the kernel. Typical examples include ordinary web stacks, databases that use standard kernel facilities, monitoring agents, and Linux game servers whose launchers and dependencies work with the host kernel.
You can select a Linux distribution for the container’s user space, but that choice does not change the underlying kernel. A distribution’s userland tools and libraries may differ while system calls ultimately reach the same host kernel.
When KVM is required
Use KVM if any of the following is a hard requirement:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A custom or patched kernel.
- A kernel module that the host has not provided.
- Low-level kernel settings that are unavailable in a container.
- Windows or another operating system that cannot run on the host Linux kernel.
- Software that expects to control boot parameters, virtual hardware, or the complete guest operating system.
- A testing environment where changing or replacing the kernel is part of the job.
For example, a Windows-based game server cannot be placed in a Linux OpenVZ container simply by uploading a Windows image. The container model does not provide a Windows kernel. A KVM plan can boot a Windows guest if the provider supports that image and licensing arrangement.
Isolation and security: different boundaries, not an automatic winner
OpenVZ isolates containers with kernel mechanisms such as namespaces and cgroups. The documented controls cover filesystem, process, IPC, and sysctl views while accounting for and limiting resource usage. This is a meaningful separation for normal multi-tenant hosting, but all containers still depend on the same kernel.

KVM inserts a hardware-virtualized machine boundary between the guest and the host. The guest kernel is independent, so a kernel-level failure or configuration change inside one guest is not the same event as changing the host kernel. That additional boundary is often preferred for stronger tenant separation or for workloads that need full operating-system control.
Neither technology is automatically secure. Security also depends on:
- How quickly the host and guest kernels are patched.
- Whether administrative access is correctly separated and least-privileged.
- How images are built, updated, and verified.
- Firewall rules, exposed services, and network segmentation.
- Snapshot and backup protection, including who can delete or restore them.
- The provider’s monitoring, incident response, and control-plane security.
If your threat model requires a separate guest kernel, KVM is the practical choice. If your workload is low-risk and the provider operates containers carefully, OpenVZ may be entirely adequate.
Resource guarantees matter more than the virtualization label
Ask how the plan’s advertised CPU, memory, storage, and network values are enforced. A container plan may be efficient but still perform poorly if many tenants share the same physical cores or if memory reclamation is aggressive. A KVM plan may advertise dedicated vCPUs but deliver inconsistent storage if the underlying array is saturated.
Before ordering, obtain clear answers to these questions:
- Are vCPUs or CPU shares reserved, capped, or burstable?
- What happens when the host runs out of memory?
- Is storage local SSD, network-attached, or a tiered system, and are IOPS limits documented?
- Are network speeds a port maximum or a guaranteed rate?
- Does the plan include automatic backups, and how many restore points are retained?
- Can you take snapshots while the service is running, and how are snapshots billed or limited?
- Which operating-system images and kernel versions are supported?
- Can support investigate host contention rather than only rebooting the guest?
These answers often explain real-world differences more accurately than the OpenVZ or KVM name.

Storage and networking considerations for game servers
Game servers frequently alternate between CPU-heavy simulation and bursty storage activity. World saves, map generation, mod installation, and log writes can expose storage latency even when average CPU use is low. Ask for the storage type, snapshot behavior, and any I/O ceiling before choosing a plan.
Network quality is equally important. A high nominal port speed does not guarantee low latency to your players. Check the provider’s locations, routing, DDoS handling, traffic limits, and whether private networking is available for databases, proxies, or backup targets.

OpenVZ’s low overhead can help when you need many small Linux services on one host. KVM’s independent virtual devices and guest kernel are more useful when a game server requires a particular operating system, driver, module, or tuning method. Neither model fixes a poor upstream network or an overloaded disk array.

OpenVZ migration
OpenVZ documents live migration for both virtual machines and containers. The process transfers memory and disks, briefly suspends the source, sends changed pages and blocks, and resumes the workload on the destination.
The documented requirements include a network capable of at least 1 Gbps, source and destination hosts on the same subnet, CPUs from the same vendor with sufficient compatible capabilities, and supported storage layouts. A provider may impose additional limits based on its control plane and storage design. If those conditions are not met, expect a planned outage or an export-and-restore process instead of seamless migration.
OpenVZ’s readme also describes container migration using CRIU and P.Haul, with cgroups and namespaces providing the current resource-isolation mechanisms. That tooling does not eliminate the need for compatible kernels, storage, networking, and provider support.
KVM migration
KVM migration is not one universal feature. The provider must support moving the guest’s disks and memory between compatible hosts, and the guest image, virtual hardware definition, CPU mode, and storage backend must be accepted at the destination. Some providers offer live migration; others require a shutdown, image export, or backup restore.

A decision matrix for common workloads
| Your requirement | Better default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Linux web application or small API | OpenVZ if the host’s limits and support are clear | Low overhead and quick provisioning are useful when no kernel changes are needed. |
| Linux game server using ordinary user-space dependencies | Either; start with provider quality | Both can work. CPU consistency, storage latency, and network routing decide the player experience. |
| Windows game server | KVM | The guest needs an independent Windows kernel. |
| Custom Linux kernel or out-of-tree kernel module | KVM | OpenVZ cannot provide a private kernel or arbitrary host-unapproved modules. |
| Many small, lightweight Linux services | OpenVZ | Container density and low virtualization overhead can reduce per-service cost when isolation is sufficient. |
| Security model requires a guest-kernel boundary | KVM | Hardware virtualization separates the guest kernel from the host kernel. |
| Frequent host moves | Whichever platform has a documented migration path | OpenVZ and KVM migration depend on topology, storage, CPU compatibility, and provider tooling. |
How to choose a plan step by step
- List non-negotiable operating-system requirements. Write down the required OS, kernel version, modules, drivers, and boot settings. If the list includes Windows or a private kernel, eliminate OpenVZ immediately.
- Classify the workload. Estimate peak concurrent players or requests, memory at startup and during spikes, disk-write bursts, and network regions. Do not size from idle usage.
- Define the isolation requirement. Decide whether shared-kernel isolation is acceptable for your threat model and compliance obligations. If not, choose KVM.
- Compare resource policies. Obtain the CPU allocation method, memory behavior, I/O limits, network policy, and oversubscription explanation in writing.
- Verify operations. Confirm backups, snapshots, image choices, console access, support hours, patch responsibilities, and recovery procedures.
- Check migration before committing. Request the supported source and destination combinations, expected downtime, data-transfer requirements, and rollback method.
- Run a representative trial. Load the real game build, mods, plugins, database, and scheduled saves. Monitor latency and disk behavior during the busiest expected period.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “KVM” means dedicated hardware
KVM provides a virtual machine boundary; it does not automatically reserve a physical core, disk array, or network path. Read the resource guarantee and oversubscription policy.
Assuming any Linux distribution means any kernel
On OpenVZ, a different userland does not create a different kernel. Confirm that the required kernel features and modules are exposed by the host.

Choosing from CPU overhead alone
The documented 1–2% OpenVZ figure describes the virtualization layer and is not a complete workload benchmark. Storage latency, memory pressure, and noisy neighbors can dominate the result.
Recommended Free Tools
Buying without a recovery test
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Ask how to restore a full image, how long it takes, and whether the provider can recover a deleted or corrupted world.
Ignoring migration constraints
Live migration may require at least 1 Gbps between hosts, the same subnet, compatible CPUs from the same vendor, and supported storage. Treat migration as an engineering feature with prerequisites, not a checkbox.
Is KVM better than OpenVZ?
KVM is better when compatibility, kernel control, or a separate guest-kernel boundary is the priority. It is the least surprising option for a new deployment whose requirements may evolve, because you are not tied to the host’s kernel choices.
OpenVZ is better when the workload is known to be Linux-compatible, the host kernel provides everything it needs, and density, fast lifecycle operations, or low overhead are more important than kernel independence. For a fleet of small, conventional services, that can be a rational and efficient design.
For either choice, provider execution remains decisive. A reliable host with transparent limits, tested backups, responsive support, and a documented migration path is preferable to a nominally superior virtualization technology operated poorly.
Final recommendation
Start with KVM unless you can clearly state why a shared Linux kernel is sufficient. Pick OpenVZ deliberately for compatible Linux workloads where container density and low overhead provide a measurable benefit. Then validate the provider: resource guarantees, storage, network quality, backups, image support, security practices, and migration terms should all be part of the decision.
