You may instead see:
- “The program can’t start because opera_elf.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “opera_elf.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”

The safest repair is to reinstall the complete matching Opera product from Opera’s official download page. Do not download the DLL separately or copy it into System32.

Which fix applies to you
- Opera opens: Use Opera’s built-in update or recovery tools first.
- Opera does not open, but your bookmarks and passwords matter: Back up the Opera profile before uninstalling.
- The error began after an update or failed reinstall: Use the full official offline installer and replace the damaged program files.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: Check Protection history, then reinstall unless the file’s path and signature are clearly legitimate.
- The file exists outside an Opera folder: Treat it as suspicious and scan before opening or restoring it.
- The message names
VCRUNTIME140.dllor another Microsoft DLL: Repair the Visual C++ Redistributable instead. - Other Windows programs also fail: Run DISM and SFC after protecting your Opera data.
- You use Windows 7 or 8.1: Opera 95 is the last supported Opera branch for those systems. Use the compatible archived package rather than forcing a current build.
1. Confirm which Opera installation is failing
Before changing files, identify the product and the complete path shown by the error.
Check whether the shortcut launches:
- Opera Stable
- Opera GX
- Opera Developer
- A standalone or portable Opera installation
- Another application that happens to display the error
Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target. The path should point into an Opera installation, commonly one of these locations:
#1 Best Overall
%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsOpera<version>
%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsOpera GX<version>
%PROGRAMFILES%Opera<version>
opera_elf.dll is not expected in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
If the file is in a temporary folder, Downloads, a startup folder, or an unrelated writable directory, do not replace it with a downloaded copy. Scan the file and its containing folder first.
Also consider what happened immediately before the failure:
- An interrupted Opera update
- A failed uninstall or reinstall
- An antivirus detection
- Disk cleanup
- An abrupt shutdown
- Mixing Opera Stable and Opera GX files
- Copying files from another version or computer
These clues usually distinguish damaged program files from a profile problem.
2. Use Opera’s repair tools if the browser still opens
If Opera starts intermittently or opens on another shortcut:
- Open Opera.
- Select the O Menu.
- Choose Update & Recovery.
- Select Check for Update.
- Install the update if one is offered.
- Return to Update & Recovery and choose Recover if the browser remains unstable.
- Select the recovery option that repairs Opera while retaining personal data when available.
Restart Windows and test the same shortcut. If the missing-file message remains, close Opera and continue with a profile backup before reinstalling.
3. Back up your Opera profile before uninstalling
Reinstalling the program can repair opera_elf.dll, but an uninstall choice or damaged profile can remove personal data. Back up first.
If Opera opens:
- Type
opera:about/in the address bar. - Press Enter.
- Note the Profile and Profile path locations.
- Close every Opera window.
- Open File Explorer and paste the profile path into the address bar.
- Copy the profile folder to a separate location, such as an external drive.

Look for folders belonging to Opera Stable or Opera GX and copy them before proceeding. Do not delete either location until the backup is complete.
4. Reinstall Opera with the correct official package
This is the most reliable fix when the DLL is missing, corrupted, or reports status 0xc000012f.
- Open Opera’s official Windows download page by typing
opera.com/downloadinto your browser. - Select the same product that failed, such as Opera or Opera GX.
- Choose the package matching the computer and existing installation: 64-bit, 32-bit, ARM, or offline.
- Download the complete installer.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Opera or Opera GX.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the affected product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If Windows offers to remove browsing data or the profile, leave that option unselected.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as an administrator: right-click it, select Show more options, then Run as administrator.
- Launch the repaired Opera installation.
A successful repair opens Opera without the DLL dialog and retains the profile, bookmarks, extensions, or sessions that survived the original installation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not install Opera GX over Opera Stable, or copy opera_elf.dll between them. A matching full installation is safer than replacing one file because the browser executable, DLLs, resources, and updater must belong to the same build.
5. If uninstall or reinstall is blocked
A damaged update can leave stale version folders or mixed installation files.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select any Opera, Opera GX, or Opera Updater process.
- Choose End task.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Opera program location shown in the shortcut or error dialog.
- Remove only the damaged versioned program folder.
- Do not remove
%APPDATA%Opera Softwareor%LOCALAPPDATA%Opera Software. - Run the full official installer again as administrator.
Do not manually launch Autoupdate.exe as though it were the normal installer. An updater may require update-specific parameters and may only patch a compatible existing build. Running it directly can leave an incomplete or mixed installation.
If the installer still fails, record the exact error, path, Opera variant, Windows version, and whether Windows Security reported a blocked file. Those details point to the next cause.
6. Check antivirus quarantine and file signatures
Windows Security may quarantine a damaged or suspicious Opera file during an update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the event involving Opera or
opera_elf.dll. - Check the original file path and the detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are clear:
- The original path is inside the expected Opera installation folder.
- The file belongs to the correct Opera product.
- The digital signature is valid.
- The detection is clearly a false positive.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan, consider an offline scan, and reinstall Opera from a fresh official installer. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer.
A valid signature does not make a DLL in an unexpected folder safe. Location, signer, and the surrounding installation must agree.
7. Match the application architecture
Opera provides separate Windows packages for 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM systems. The supplied database record describing opera_elf.dll as 32-bit, version 0.0.0.0, and about 0.57 MB is not a universal specification. Opera releases can differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type.
Install the package matching the Opera build you intend to use, not merely the architecture of a DLL found online. Never copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation or mix files from different version folders.
For Windows 7 or 8.1, use the supported archived Opera 95 branch. Current Windows packages may not be compatible with those operating systems.
8. Repair Visual C++ only when the message names it
opera_elf.dll is not itself the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Repairing Visual C++ will not normally recreate a missing Opera-private DLL.
Take this route only when the dialog separately names a dependency such as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP140.dll
api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll
Then:
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the required official package:
vc_redist.x86.exe,vc_redist.x64.exe, orvc_redist.arm64.exe. - Run the installer.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart Windows and test Opera.
If the dialog still names opera_elf.dll, return to the complete Opera reinstall. Do not use a third-party DLL package.
9. Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption
Use Windows repair commands when other applications also report damaged system files. They normally repair protected Windows components, not a private Opera DLL deleted from its installation folder.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Opera.
If SFC reports repaired files but Opera still cannot find opera_elf.dll, reinstall Opera. Repeating SFC and DISM will not rebuild Opera’s application files.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating repairs without knowing which file changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for an Opera reinstall.
10. Drivers and Windows Features are usually unrelated
A graphics or chipset driver does not normally supply opera_elf.dll. Do not update drivers as the first response to this specific error.
Check drivers only when Opera also crashes with display errors, Windows reports device failures, or other graphics applications fail:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If Windows Features are needed for another separately reported dependency, open Settings > Optional features > More Windows features and enable only a feature required by that dependency. Do not enable random legacy components to replace opera_elf.dll.
Manually checking dozens of hardware drivers is tedious; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace reinstalling Opera when Opera’s own DLL is damaged.

Why common DLL fixes fail
Do not copy the file into System32
opera_elf.dll belongs beside Opera’s own executables. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and DLL hijacking opportunities.
Rank #4
Do not use random DLL download sites
Loose downloads may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Opera release. Even a genuine DLL may not match the rest of the installation. The safe source is Opera’s complete official installer.
Do not run regsvr32 opera_elf.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. opera_elf.dll is privately loaded by Opera and is not documented as a self-registering component.
For a genuinely self-registering DLL, the command would be run from an elevated Command Prompt, but it is not an appropriate repair for this Opera file. It will usually produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing.
FAQ
Is opera_elf.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Opera browser component. It should normally be located inside an Opera or Opera GX installation directory.
Will reinstalling Opera delete my bookmarks and passwords?
It can, depending on the uninstall choices and the condition of the profile. Back up the profile first and decline any option to delete browsing data.
Should I restore the file from antivirus quarantine?
Only after checking its original Opera path, signature, and detection details. If it is repeatedly quarantined, scan the system and reinstall from Opera’s official installer instead.
Does SFC fix this error?
Usually not. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing Opera-private DLL.

What if the message names a different DLL?
Follow that dependency’s repair path. A Visual C++ runtime error may justify repairing Microsoft’s Redistributable, while a Windows system DLL error may justify DISM and SFC.
What if the file is in Downloads or Temp?
Do not run or restore it. Scan the file and obtain a clean Opera installation from the official source.
Prevent the error from returning
Keep Opera Stable and Opera GX installations separate, allow updates to finish, and avoid shutting down Windows during an update. Do not launch Autoupdate.exe manually, mix files between version folders, or use loose DLL replacements.
If the issue returns, preserve the exact dialog path, error code, Opera variant, Windows version, architecture, antivirus event, and installer result. That information quickly separates a damaged update from quarantine, an incompatible build, profile corruption, or a suspicious file.
