Elden Ring can be a favourite without being a game I’ve finished, mastered, or even played for long. That sounds like a contradiction only if “favourite” is a tally of hours. For me, it can also describe the rare game whose world and design leave a lasting impression before I’ve seen much of it.
Why love a game you’ve barely played?
There is a difference between loving the experience of playing a game and valuing what a game makes possible. With Elden Ring, the idea of a vast, dangerous world that invites discovery can matter even when my time inside it is limited. I don’t need to claim a particular boss victory or a long, triumphant run to explain the appeal; the premise itself is potent.

That distinction matters because “favourite” is not a synonym for “most played.” A game can stay in my mind because of its atmosphere, its sense of scale, or the feeling that there is always another path to take. Those qualities are not a substitute for playing it, but they can be part of why I want to return.
What makes Elden Ring inviting—and demanding
Elden Ring is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world, built around open fields, dungeons, exploration, and combat challenges. Its openness gives players choices about where to go, but it does not make the fights gentle. Bandai Namco Europe describes the game as having no difficulty setting; players can instead explore, try another route, summon other players, use Spirit Ashes, or change their build. That is flexibility, not a promise that every obstacle will be easy.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said he wants new players to feel “unpressured” and able to approach the game at their own pace. He also says players can leave an impasse and return later, rather than repeatedly hitting the same wall. That design makes a short session feel possible: progress need not mean defeating the one enemy currently blocking the way.
But freedom cuts both ways. A world with many routes can make a brief visit satisfying, yet its scale and challenging combat can also make it harder to fit into limited gaming time. A TechCrunch reviewer called playing it a time commitment for some casual players; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measured average completion time. There is no reliable figure here that says how long a typical player must spend, and the hours I’ve put in should not be mistaken for a verdict on what the game demands of everyone.

Can you play Elden Ring at your own pace?
Yes, in the sense that the game offers ways to step away from a difficult encounter and pursue something else. That does not mean its challenge disappears or that every session will produce a clear victory. It means that being stuck in one place need not be the end of a session—or of a run.
For someone with limited time, the useful question may be less “Can I finish this quickly?” and more “Would I enjoy spending a session exploring, learning a fight, or trying a different route, even if I don’t reach a conclusion?” If the answer is yes, the game’s flexibility may suit you. If you need every session to deliver obvious progress, its scale and difficulty may feel like friction rather than freedom.

Bandai Namco’s current page lists the base game and editions containing Shadow of the Erdtree; the expansion requires the base game. The Switch 2 Tarnished Edition is another option, and a TechRadar reviewer reported playing that version mainly in handheld mode. That is a single reviewer’s experience, not a claim about typical playtime or performance across every player’s setup. Check Bandai Namco’s official page for current platform and edition details.

I can call Elden Ring one of my favourite games without pretending I know all of it. The label says something about the impression it has made, not how much of its map I have crossed or how many challenges I have overcome. It also leaves room for a complicated truth: a game can be compelling enough to admire and demanding enough that I have hardly played it.
Best Value

- Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire
- Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, and foreboding castles
- Create your character in FromSoftware’s refi ned action-RPG and defi ne your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world
- Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid - many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat
That is not a universal test of whether Elden Ring is worth starting. It is a way to separate affection from completion. You can value a world before exhausting it, and you can decide that a game’s demands do not fit your life right now without denying what makes it special.
