A September 30, 2026 report says it can navigate cartridge soundtracks and offers several additional audio and cartridge tools, but its release date, price and full compatibility list have not been confirmed.
What is Retro Song Bird?
Retro Song Bird is the name Time Extension used for a developing accessory described by its maker-linked project page as the “GB Speaker.” It is intended to let owners play the audio stored in Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges without using a handheld console. The project page remains labeled “GB Speaker Development,” so the product name may still need confirmation from the maker. Bird Cartel’s project page describes the device as a standalone speaker for unlocking Game Boy cartridge soundtracks.

What can it do with Game Boy cartridges?
Play and control cartridge audio
Time Extension reported that users insert a cartridge, browse its soundtrack, skip forward or backward between tracks, and adjust volume. The report describes the audio as using “accurate, register-level sound emulation.” The device can also connect to a stereo. These are announced or reported capabilities, not independently tested results. Time Extension’s September 30, 2026 report says the device is expected to support more than 1,900 Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges; it does not provide a title-by-title compatibility list.
Export and route audio
The reported feature set includes WAV export and four-channel USB audio streams intended for remixing. Those options could make the device useful beyond listening on its own speaker, though the report does not specify file-format settings, software requirements or technical limits for the USB streams.

Use cartridge and camera utilities
Time Extension also lists save-data backup, ROM dumping, and writing to compatible flash cartridges. Another reported feature is using a Game Boy Camera as a webcam. The report does not identify which flash cartridges are compatible or provide detailed procedures for these functions, so they should not be treated as universal guarantees.
Other planned features
The announced feature list includes an alarm, an open API and built-in Wi-Fi for planned over-the-air updates. The report does not give details about update timing, API documentation or the alarm’s configuration.

Compatibility and what remains unknown
The reported figure of more than 1,900 supported cartridges is broad rather than a published compatibility guarantee. No complete list was available in the cited coverage, and no individual cartridge compatibility claims should be inferred from the number alone. Buyers will need maker documentation to verify support for a particular game or cartridge revision.
As of the September 30, 2026 report, launch was expected later in 2026, but no firm release date, price or retailer was established. The maker-linked page still calls the project “GB Speaker Development.” Check for an official product name, sales listing and compatibility information before making a purchase decision.
