| Setting | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Game Sound Device | Your actual headset or headphones | Prevents audio being sent to a monitor, capture card, virtual mixer, or another device |
| Speaker Output | Stereo | Provides the simplest reference path |
| Audio Mix | Headphones | Neutral starting point for headphone users |
| Effects Volume | 100 | Preserves gameplay cues |
| Music Volume | 0 or near 0 | Removes nonessential masking |
| Dialogue | 30–60 | Lower it if announcements cover effects |
| Voice Chat | 50–80 | Keeps teammates intelligible without overwhelming game audio |
| Master Volume | Comfortable listening level | More volume is not a substitute for clarity and can cause fatigue |
| Mono Audio | Off | Preserves normal left/right positioning |
| Enhanced Headphone Mode | Off initially; test separately | HRTF can improve localization for some listeners and sound worse for others |
| EQ | Flat initially | Establishes a trustworthy reference before changing the headset’s tone |
Menu labels can vary by platform, language, headset software, and client update. If your build includes Menu Music, set it to 0 for competitive play. Cinematics, MOTD, and licensed-music sliders can usually remain between 0 and 30 according to preference.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
These slider values are practical starting points, not official developer-certified competitive values. Activision’s audio guidance emphasizes matching the mix to the hardware and checking the output device and master volume.
Configure Warzone before changing Windows or console audio
- Open Settings → Audio.
- Choose the physical headset or headphones under Game Sound Device.
- Set the intended output format and begin with Stereo.
- Select Headphones as the initial mix.
- Set Effects Volume high, remove music, and lower dialogue only when it masks gameplay.
- Open Settings → Audio → Voice Chat separately to verify voice output and chat volume.
Change one setting at a time. If you change the mix, HRTF, EQ, platform spatial audio, and volume together, you will not know which change helped—or caused a hollow, delayed, or incorrectly positioned sound.
Choosing an audio mix
There is no reliable universal winner because the same mix can behave very differently on a bass-heavy headset, bright IEMs, television speakers, and a soundbar.
- Headphones: The safest neutral reference for most headphone users. It may sound less full than bass-oriented alternatives.
- Headphone Bass Boost: Adds body and can suit a thin-sounding headset, but extra low-frequency energy may mask quieter footstep detail. On a bass-heavy headset, it can make explosions and vehicles harder to separate.
- Sucker Punch: Worth comparing if it appears in your current build. Its tonal balance may improve clarity on one headset and make another harsh or unnatural.
- Treyarch Mix or a developer-recommended mix: Use as a comparison or control where available. Do not assume that a label used in an older title has exactly the same tuning in the current Warzone client.
- TV, Home Theater, or soundbar options: Use only when the physical setup matches. They are not automatically better for headphones.
Compare mixes in the same training area, private match, or repeatable gameplay situation. Listen for footsteps, ladders, jumps, landings, gunfire, speech, and distance—not just which mix sounds louder in a chaotic public match.
Enhanced Headphone Mode: test HRTF instead of assuming
Enhanced Headphone Mode uses head-related transfer function (HRTF) spatial processing. Activision describes it as using Embody’s Immerse Spatial Audio technology, with a Universal HRTF profile and optional personalization intended to account for physical differences such as ear and head shape. Activision’s explanations are available in its audio deep dive and Season 01 patch notes.
HRTF is listener-dependent. It may improve front-versus-rear, elevation, externalization, or distance cues for you. It may instead add coloration, make sounds seem farther away, create an unnatural tonal balance, or increase fatigue. A personalized profile is not automatically more accurate for every player, and current access or personalization terms may change.

A five-minute HRTF A/B test
- Keep the same headset, volume, and audio mix.
- Play with Enhanced Headphone Mode off.
- Check front/rear separation, left/right precision, vertical cues, distance changes, and speech harshness.
- Turn it on without changing anything else.
- Keep it only if localization improves without unacceptable fatigue or tonal distortion.
Do not initially combine in-game HRTF with Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, DTS, or a headset’s virtual 7.1 mode. Test each spatial renderer as an alternative path.

PC setup: keep the signal path understandable
In Warzone
Use Settings → Audio to select the real game-output device and configure the mix. Use Settings → Audio → Voice Chat to confirm voice output and chat volume.
In Windows
- Confirm Windows is using the same physical output device selected in Warzone.
- Open the per-app volume mixer and verify that Warzone is not muted or routed elsewhere.
- Temporarily disable audio enhancements while troubleshooting.
- Start with Windows spatial audio off if Enhanced Headphone Mode is enabled.
- Test Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, or DTS separately—not simultaneously.
Loudness Equalization, where exposed by your audio driver, is an optional experiment rather than a guaranteed footsteps solution. Compression can make quiet sounds easier to hear, but it can also reduce the contrast between quiet and loud sounds, alter distance perception, raise background noise, and make positioning less natural. The Enhancement tab may be missing because the driver exposes the feature elsewhere or does not support it.
Headset software
SteelSeries Sonar, Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound, Equalizer APO with Peace, and manufacturer utilities can provide routing, EQ, or spatial processing. They are optional. A robust testing rule is one spatial renderer, one EQ, and one clearly understood output path. Virtual devices can cause Warzone to play through the wrong endpoint, so bypass the software temporarily if sound disappears.
PS5 setup
Choose the actual headset output in the PS5 audio settings and begin with stereo or the console’s standard headset mode. Check headset volume and game/chat balance separately. Use Warzone’s controls for effects, music, dialogue, and voice volume; use the console controls for device routing and chat balance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Xbox setup
Confirm that the headset is selected as the Xbox output. Begin with uncompressed stereo or the headset maker’s documented recommended format. Then test Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic, and DTS separately from Warzone’s own spatial mode.
Use the Xbox guide for headset volume and game/chat balance. A headset’s “superhuman hearing,” “footstep boost,” or similar preset is not necessarily neutral; it may be aggressive EQ or loudness compression. Treat it as another processing profile to compare, not a requirement.
What footsteps and movement cues actually contain
Warzone audio is not a simple track in which every enemy footstep is equally loud. Activision describes systems involving dynamic prioritization, occlusion, reverb, sound modifiers, elevation, surfaces, and movement state. Its later Warzone notes describe footstep loudness changing with movement speed, pitch changes associated with elevation, and tuned ladder, overhead, jumping, and landing cues. See the Warzone Season 03 patch notes.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUseful information may come from more than ordinary running footsteps:
- Movement speed can change loudness.
- Pitch can help communicate elevation.
- Ladders, mantles, jumps, and landings may have distinct signatures.
- Friendly and enemy movement can be mixed differently.
- Corners, surfaces, occlusion, reverb, vehicles, gunfire, and explosions can mask or alter cues.
Consequently, a missing sound is not always a headset failure. Settings can improve audibility and consistency, but they cannot make every cue survive every game-state priority or obstruction.
EQ: improve separation without chasing a universal curve
EQ should compensate for your specific headset, not copy a curve made for someone else’s hardware and hearing. Excessive sub-bass can mask quieter details. A modest low-end reduction may improve perceived separation. A small presence or treble change can increase detail, but too much makes gunshots, armor plates, alarms, and sibilance painful.

- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
- Start flat and save a bypass profile.
- Reduce excessive low bass modestly rather than removing all warmth.
- Make small presence-region changes only when a specific problem remains.
- Lower preamp gain when making boosts to prevent clipping.
- Compare at matched loudness; the louder profile will often seem better in a quick test.
- Test both close and distant cues.
- Stop if you experience harshness, ringing, fatigue, or loss of positional depth.
There is no reliable frequency setting that guarantees hearing footsteps at a particular distance. Community EQ curves are anecdotal and hardware-specific; extreme boosts can make the overall result worse.

Voice chat without losing game audio
- Reduce Voice Chat Volume until teammates remain clear without dominating effects.
- Use the platform’s game/chat balance control to favor game audio when necessary.
- Lower Dialogue or announcer volume if that—not squad chat—is the masking source.
- Use party chat when appropriate, while remembering that proximity chat and in-game communication may follow different routing.
- Confirm voice output is not going to a separate monitor, controller, or virtual device.
Activision’s current-style communication guidance places voice controls under Settings → Audio → Voice Chat; see its communication guide. Exact labels can differ by platform and update.
Accessibility and hearing comfort
- Mono Audio: Useful when hearing with one ear or when stereo separation is confusing. Normally leave it off for conventional directional play.
- Asymmetrical Hearing Compensation: Intended to balance differences between ears and support localization. It is not a universal footsteps booster; enable it when you need it and compare after calibration.
- Reduce Tinnitus Sound: Enable it when high-frequency effects are uncomfortable.
Hearing comfort takes priority over a theoretical competitive gain. Do not compensate for a poor mix by continually raising volume. Take breaks and stop if listening becomes painful, fatiguing, or produces ringing.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No game audio
- Open Settings → Audio and confirm the Game Sound Device.
- Make sure the OS or console output matches it.
- Check Master Volume and Effects Volume.
- Check Warzone in the Windows volume mixer.
- Temporarily disable headset software routing.
- Restart Warzone after changing the default output device.
- Test a basic stereo path before restoring spatial processing.
Activision specifically identifies the master volume and game-sound device as key checks when game audio is missing.
Audio sounds distant, hollow, or underwater
- Turn off Enhanced Headphone Mode.
- Turn off Windows Sonic, Dolby, DTS, and headset surround.
- Return EQ to flat.
- Use the neutral Headphones mix.
- Restart the game.
- Re-enable only one processing feature at a time.
Explosions are unbearable
- Keep Effects Volume high enough to preserve cues.
- Try another audio mix instead of raising or lowering everything.
- Disable bass boost or reduce excessive low-frequency EQ.
- Experiment with modest loudness compression only after considering its positional trade-offs.
- Lower overall listening level if necessary.
Direction is wrong
- Disable Mono Audio.
- Verify left and right channels with a stereo test.
- Remove duplicate surround or spatial processing.
- Check whether the device is treated as stereo or multichannel.
- Compare Enhanced Headphone Mode on and off.
- Try another mix and check headset fit and ear-pad seal.
Wireless audio is delayed
Check whether the headset is using its low-latency dongle or a Bluetooth hands-free profile. Wireless software, microphone activation, and platform routing can change latency or quality. Test with a wired or basic stereo path to isolate the headset from Warzone processing.
A repeatable five-minute testing protocol
- Choose one repeatable training or private-match location.
- Set a comfortable, matched listening level.
- Write down the baseline: device, stereo mode, mix, EQ, HRTF, and platform spatial settings.
- Test one mix against another while listening for front/rear, elevation, distance, speech, and fatigue.
- Reset to the better mix, then test Enhanced Headphone Mode alone.
- Test platform or headset spatial audio alone if you still want it.
- Apply EQ only after choosing the spatial path.
- Use loudness compression last, and keep it only if the improved audibility outweighs the loss of dynamics or positional depth.
Repeat the test over more than one match or session. Familiarity, fatigue, and volume differences can make a new setting seem better temporarily.
Practical profiles
| Profile | Configuration | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral competitive headphones | Stereo; Headphones mix; Effects 100; Music 0; flat EQ; HRTF tested separately | Less dramatic and full than bass-oriented profiles |
| Bass-heavy headset | Start with Headphones; disable Bass Boost if explosions mask detail; modest low-end reduction if needed | May sound less exciting |
| PC with external spatial audio | Choose either Warzone HRTF or Windows/headset spatial audio; keep the other off initially | More control, but more routing and troubleshooting points |
| Console stereo | Actual headset output; stereo; console 3D/spatial mode off initially; test it separately | Fewer processing options and potentially less externalization |
| Accessibility-focused | Use Mono Audio or Asymmetrical Hearing Compensation only when needed; enable Reduce Tinnitus Sound for comfort | May reduce conventional stereo separation |
| Immersion-first | Compare bass-oriented mixes and one spatial renderer; retain music and dialogue at comfortable levels | More atmosphere can mean more masking |
What a new headset or audio app can—and cannot—fix
A reliable stereo headset, low-latency connection, comfortable fit, and adjustable EQ can make a setup easier to tune. A game/chat mixer can also improve squad communication. PC tools such as SteelSeries Sonar, Dolby Access, DTS software, or Equalizer APO can add control, but each introduces another possible routing or processing layer.
Personalized HRTF through Embody is an optional consideration after comparing the Universal profile and unprocessed audio. Its current price, trial, availability, and terms can vary. No headset or app can remove Warzone’s underlying occlusion, reverb, priority behavior, or patch-specific mix limitations.
