Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If that does not help, unpair the affected controller in the Meta Horizon app and pair it again. Do not factory-reset the headset unless controller-specific troubleshooting has failed: a headset factory reset erases headset data and settings.
What “reset” means on a Quest 2 controller
Quest 2 Touch controllers do not have a conventional pinhole reset button or a normal on-screen controller factory-reset menu. The word “reset” usually refers to one of four different actions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Power reset: Remove the AA battery briefly, then install a known-good battery.
- Connection reset: Unpair the controller and pair it with the headset again.
- Controller reset procedure: Use a documented button combination when normal pairing fails.
- Headset factory reset: Erase and reset the Quest 2 itself. This is a separate, destructive operation.
Troubleshoot only the affected controller first. There is usually no reason to unpair both controllers when one is the problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before you start
- Charge the headset and keep it near your phone.
- Install the Meta Horizon mobile app. Older instructions may call it the Oculus app.
- Sign in with the Meta account associated with the headset.
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone.
- Have a fresh AA battery available.
- Identify whether the issue affects the left controller, right controller, or both.
Step 1: Power-cycle the controller
- Slide off the controller’s battery cover.
- Remove the AA battery.
- Wait at least 30 seconds. For persistent problems, Meta support has also suggested leaving the battery out for several minutes; this is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed factory-reset duration.
- Insert a known-good AA battery with the correct polarity.
- Press a controller button to wake it.
- Restart the headset, then test the controller.
Meta support recommends removing and replacing the batteries before attempting to pair again. See the Meta community troubleshooting guidance.
If the controller still appears dead
Check the battery compartment before assuming the electronics have failed. Try a second brand-new AA battery, confirm the battery is seated correctly, and inspect the contacts for dirt or corrosion. Do not aggressively bend the contacts or insert metal tools while the battery is installed. Rechargeable AA batteries are not universally incompatible, but their voltage, runtime, and fit can differ from disposable batteries.
Step 2: Unpair and pair the controller again
In the Meta Horizon app, the usual path is:
Devices → your Quest headset → Controllers → affected controller → Unpair Controller
App labels can move between releases. You may instead see Headset settings, Pair new controller, or similar wording. Select only the controller that is malfunctioning.
After unpairing:
- Install a fresh AA battery.
- Open the headset’s controller-pairing screen in the Meta Horizon app.
- Choose the left or right controller as appropriate.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Wait for the app to confirm the connection.
- Put on the headset and test the buttons, trigger, thumbstick, vibration, and tracking.
If the controller is not detected, restart the phone, app, and headset, then try again with the devices close together.
Step 3: Try manual pairing
Documented Quest 2 troubleshooting procedures commonly use these manual pairing combinations:
- Right controller: Hold the Oculus/Meta button + B.
- Left controller: Hold the Menu button + Y.
Hold the buttons until the controller’s LED begins flashing, then follow the app’s instructions. Exact behavior and menu labels can vary with headset and controller software, so treat these combinations as a troubleshooting method rather than a universal guarantee. The procedure is summarized in this Meta Quest support reference.
Step 4: Try the controller reset combination
If battery removal and re-pairing do not work, try the controller reset combination below:
- Right controller: Hold A + Oculus/Meta button.
- Left controller: Hold X + Menu button.
Continue until the LED flashes red and white, then release and attempt manual pairing again. LED behavior can vary with firmware state. A purple light may indicate an update in progress, so do not remove the battery during an apparent update; keep the headset powered on, keep the controller nearby, and wait for the process to finish.
This is not the same as factory-resetting the Quest 2 headset. If the LED never responds after trying a fresh battery, stop repeating the reset and move to hardware checks or Meta support.

Match the fix to the symptom
| Symptom | Try first | If it continues |
|---|---|---|
| No light, vibration, or input | Fresh AA battery and battery-contact inspection | Try another battery, then contact Meta support |
| Lights up but is not listed | Unpair and pair again in the app | Restart the phone, app, and headset; try manual pairing |
| Connected but invisible in VR | Restart the headset and check tracking conditions | Re-pair and check for pending software updates |
| Tracking jumps or disappears | Improve lighting and remove reflective objects | Clean the headset cameras with a suitable microfiber cloth and inspect the tracking ring |
| Buttons or trigger fail | Re-pair the controller | Suspect hardware if individual inputs remain dead |
| Thumbstick drifts | Use any available calibration or dead-zone adjustment | Consider repair or replacement for persistent mechanical wear |
| Repeated disconnections | Check battery fit and contacts | Investigate firmware, contact, or hardware failure |
Why resetting may not fix tracking
Resetting addresses power and pairing problems, not every tracking problem. Ensure the room has adequate lighting, avoid direct sunlight entering the headset cameras, and move highly reflective objects away from the play area. Clean the headset’s tracking cameras with a suitable microfiber cloth. Also check that the controller’s tracking ring is not cracked, obstructed, or physically damaged.
A controller can appear connected while still failing to track or accept input. That points toward tracking, firmware, or hardware trouble rather than a simple pairing error.
Do not factory-reset the headset unless necessary
A Quest 2 headset factory reset is a last resort. It returns the headset to initial setup and removes local headset data and settings. It may be justified if both controllers fail after battery replacement and re-pairing, the headset is stuck during setup, or Meta support specifically recommends it. Check that important data has synced where applicable before proceeding; cloud restoration is not guaranteed for every game or local file.

To factory-reset the headset:
- Turn off the Quest 2.
- Hold Power + Volume Down until the boot menu appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset.
- Press the Power button.
- Select Yes, then press Power again.
This resets the headset, not just the controller. A reported troubleshooting case was resolved by rebooting instead of completing a factory reset, so do not use this step for a single-controller fault unless the preceding fixes fail.
When to contact Meta or replace the controller
Contact Meta Quest support when a fresh battery produces no light, vibration, or response; the controller has visible damage; the tracking ring is cracked; pairing repeatedly fails after successful resets; or buttons and triggers remain dead while the headset recognizes the controller.
Replacement may make more sense for severe stick drift, internal power failure, or a broken tracking ring. If you shop for one, verify that it explicitly supports Quest 2, matches the required left or right hand, and is sold as a single controller or pair as intended. Check regional stock, warranty, and return terms because Quest 2 inventory and service eligibility can vary by country and date. Meta’s accessories area is at meta.com/quest/accessories.

The safest troubleshooting order
Use this escalation ladder:
Fresh AA battery → inspect contacts → restart the headset → unpair and re-pair → manual pairing → controller reset combination → tracking and firmware checks → Meta support or replacement.
Reserve the headset factory reset for a broader headset or setup failure, not as the routine way to reset one controller.
