Game publishers usually balance a portfolio of original intellectual property (IP) and established franchises rather than choosing one side permanently. A known series can bring a larger, more predictable audience, reusable technology and worlds, and dependable opportunities for sequels, add-ons and catalogue sales. A new property is harder to forecast, but it can give its owner greater creative control, retain more long-term value and become the next major franchise.
The deciding issue is not simply whether a game is “new” or a sequel. Financing, IP ownership, publishing duties, marketing control, royalty terms and the ability to absorb a failure determine who carries risk and who captures upside. Those rights can sit with different companies in the same project.

Why do publishers keep making sequels instead of new games?
Sequels begin with something an original game has to earn: audience awareness. Players already understand a returning series’ premise, characters or gameplay loop, and retailers, platforms and advertisers have an easier story to communicate. That familiarity does not guarantee a hit, but it can make demand easier to estimate before launch.
Remedy Entertainment describes the mechanism on its investor page: “Larger and more established audiences lead to higher expected sales and more predictable demand, which lowers the risk carried by each new launch.” This is Remedy’s strategic framing, not a universal law, but it explains why established properties often receive repeated investment. See Remedy as an investment.

Familiarity lowers discovery costs
A publisher introducing an original game must explain what it is, identify its audience and persuade players to try an unknown name. A sequel can spend more of its marketing on what has changed: a new setting, mode, character or technical feature. Existing communities, creator coverage and search interest can also provide an initial distribution channel, although none removes the need for a quality launch.
Existing systems can be reused
A continuing series may reuse production knowledge, tools, technology, art pipelines, fictional worlds and audience insights. Reuse can reduce ramp-up time and let teams spend more of the budget on meaningful improvements. It can also create technical constraints: an old engine, design convention or content expectation may limit what a sequel can attempt.
One release can support several revenue windows
A successful franchise can generate a sequence of products rather than a single launch. Publishers may release sequels, expansions, downloadable content, online updates, adaptations or remasters. Earlier entries can continue selling when a new installment renews attention, creating a back-catalogue effect. These are possible mechanisms for compounding value, not guarantees that every sequel or add-on will succeed.

Are original games riskier than established franchises?
At the launch-planning stage, an original IP normally carries more uncertainty about audience size, positioning, marketing message and critical reception. An established franchise supplies historical signals, but those signals can be misleading if the new game changes genre, platform, business model or release cadence. A familiar name therefore improves forecasting without eliminating execution risk.
What the available market data actually shows
Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2024, special focus topic 03, counted four new AAA IPs entering the market in the first half of 2024. The report also observed that very few AAA games launched during that period and that most were existing franchises, ports or remasters. The figure is explicitly scoped: Four new AAA IPs entered the market in the first half of 2024 — Newzoo, 2024. It is not a count for all games, all publishers or later periods. The report’s discussion of established market pull includes Fortnite and annual franchise releases as examples of large engagement and revenue, but it does not provide a numeric share for them. Read the report at Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2024 PDF.
Why “safer” is not the same as “safe”
A sequel can disappoint if players perceive it as repetitive, if a launch is technically unstable, or if the audience has moved to another platform or competitor. An original game can also break through precisely because players want something different. Newzoo notes that a new property may achieve major success when the market is tired of repeated franchises. No source establishes that every sequel is safer or more profitable than every original game, and no source here establishes an inevitable franchise-fatigue rate.

Why invest in new IP if franchises are safer?
Original IP gives a publisher an opportunity to own an asset whose direction is not constrained by another company’s characters, approvals or licensing terms. If the game finds an audience, the owner can decide whether to expand the world, license it, adapt it or build a sequel. The first project is risky partly because it is creating the audience that a later franchise entry could inherit.
Ownership creates long-term optionality
When a developer retains its IP, a successful original can support revenue beyond the initial contract. The owner controls sequel timing, spin-offs, merchandising and licensing negotiations, subject to any rights already granted. An original property can therefore have a lower probability of immediate success but substantial upside if it becomes distinctive and durable.
Creative control can improve strategic fit
Owning the property can let a studio choose its themes, audience, release schedule and platform strategy. That freedom may matter when a publisher wants to build a recognizable identity or develop a category where it has no established series. Control also brings responsibility: the owner must fund development or find a partner and must absorb the consequences of weak sales.
New ideas can refresh a portfolio
A portfolio made entirely of sequels can become exposed to a small number of aging audiences and launch calendars. Original projects provide a way to test new genres, technologies and player communities. The risk is managed by deciding how much capital and how many teams to commit, rather than by assuming that every experiment must become a blockbuster.
Who owns a game’s IP when a publisher funds development?
There is no default answer. A contract can separate the parties that finance development, own the IP, publish and market the game, and receive sales revenue or royalties. The party paying development costs may receive repayment priority or a larger share without owning the underlying property; conversely, an owner may hire a publisher while retaining the IP and creative authority.

| Model | Funding and ownership | Publishing and revenue | Risk and upside described by Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-publishing an owned franchise | Remedy owns the IP and funds development itself. | Remedy realizes sales revenue after sales-related taxes and discounts. Platform fees, quality assurance and localization are expenses. | Highest revenue potential and full financial risk for Remedy. |
| Co-published own-franchise game | Remedy and a partner co-fund development and divide responsibilities under agreed terms. Remedy retains its own franchise rights. | The parties share publishing duties and royalty revenue according to the agreement. | Relatively high risk with significant royalty potential. |
| Own-franchise game with a publishing partner | The partner typically funds some or all development; Remedy retains the IP and develops the game. | The partner publishes, distributes and markets the title. Revenue follows the negotiated deal. | Moderate financial risk and revenue potential for Remedy. |
| Partner-franchise game | The partner funds development and retains the IP and publishing control. | Remedy receives milestone development fees and may receive royalties after the partner recoups eligible costs. | Lower financial risk but limited participation in success. |
The practical questions in any real agreement are: who pays each development milestone; who approves scope and release timing; who owns code, characters and trademarks; who pays for marketing, testing and localization; how advances are recouped; and when royalties begin. “Publisher-funded” does not by itself answer any of those questions.
How the risk-and-reward trade-off compares
The following axes help explain why two games with similar budgets can have very different economics.
| Decision axis | Established franchise | Original IP |
|---|---|---|
| Audience familiarity | Existing awareness can make positioning and demand estimation easier. | The publisher must establish the concept, audience and brand from scratch. |
| Demand predictability | Historical launches provide signals, but changes in quality, genre or platform can invalidate them. | Forecast uncertainty is generally greater because there is no comparable franchise history. |
| Ownership and creative control | May belong to a licensor, publisher or developer; approvals can constrain direction. | The creator or financing publisher can retain a larger share of control if the contract allows. |
| Development downside | Reuse of technology, world-building and knowledge may reduce some costs, but a failure can damage a valuable brand. | All audience-building and concept-validation costs fall on the project’s funders and partners. |
| Marketing and distribution | Campaigns can use recognizable characters, prior communities and established channels. | Marketing must communicate both the game and the reason to trust a new name. |
| Royalty and sales participation | Licensing, recoupment and approval terms can limit the developer’s share. | An owner can retain more long-term participation, or trade it for financing and distribution help. |
| Future products | Sequels, expansions, remasters and catalogue sales have an existing foundation. | A successful first game can become that foundation, but there is no guarantee it will. |
These are structural trade-offs, not an empirical claim that one category earns a superior return in every period. The sources provide no independent comparative study establishing a universal risk premium or an ideal percentage of original IP in a publisher’s slate.

Partnerships let a company exchange some upside for a smaller cash commitment or a more predictable fee. In Remedy’s partner-franchise model, milestone payments arrive during development and royalties may begin only after the partner recoups costs. That structure protects the developer from bearing the full sales downside, while limiting its participation if the game becomes a breakout success.
Self-publishing reverses the trade-off. The owner pays for development, platform fees, quality assurance, localization and other launch expenses, but keeps the highest potential share of sales revenue after applicable deductions. Co-publishing sits between those positions: both parties contribute capital and capabilities, and the contract allocates royalties and responsibilities.
Questions a financing partner should answer
- Which entity owns the IP before, during and after the project?
- Is funding an advance, a recoupable cost, a milestone fee or an investment without repayment priority?
- Who controls the budget, creative approvals, launch date and platforms?
- Which party pays for marketing, customer support, certification, localization and ongoing content?
- What revenue is deducted before royalties, and what costs can be recouped?
- Does a sequel, remake, adaptation or merchandise right automatically follow the original agreement?
- What happens to the IP, source code and unfinished work if the project is cancelled?

Remedy: owned series plus partner work
Remedy identifies CONTROL and Alan Wake as its own established franchises and Max Payne as a partner franchise originally created by Remedy. Its outlook and guidance sets targets to double 2024 revenue by 2027 and achieve a 30% EBITDA margin by 2027, maintaining at least that margin through the strategy period. Those are forward-looking company targets, not realized results.

The company’s strategy page lists four pillars: creating and growing franchises; making distinctive, category-leading games; enabling successful productions; and self-publishing games it owns. This combination illustrates why a publisher can pursue both control and collaboration instead of treating them as mutually exclusive. See Remedy’s strategy.

Take-Two: internal ownership with selective licensing
Take-Two’s fiscal 2026 proxy says most of its IP is internally owned and developed, while the company selectively licenses recognizable brands, particularly in sports entertainment. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, it reported net revenue of $6.66 billion, net bookings of $6.72 billion and recurrent consumer spending of $5.20 billion, equal to 78.1% of net revenue. These figures describe Take-Two’s business, not franchise economics generally.
The same filing reports nearly 230 million GTA V units sold-in to date and more than 80 million Red Dead Redemption 2 units sold-in as of fiscal year-end. “Sold-in” is the company’s distribution measure and should not be silently treated as the number of consumer purchases. The filing is available in the 2026 proxy statement filed with the SEC.

A publisher deciding between an original project and a sequel can evaluate the project in stages rather than making a single all-or-nothing bet.
1. Define the asset being built
Is the objective a one-release product, a continuing service, a reusable technology base or a potential franchise? An original game may justify investment even with modest first-year sales if the contract preserves sequel and licensing rights. A licensed sequel may hit a revenue target while creating little owned asset value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Separate controllable from uncontrollable risk
Team capability, production scope, launch quality and platform support are controllable to a degree. Audience size, competitive releases and changing player preferences are not. A familiar franchise reduces some uncertainty around awareness, but it cannot compensate for an unmanageable scope or poor execution.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
3. Match capital to evidence
Early prototypes, audience tests and milestone reviews can determine whether a new concept deserves a larger budget. A known franchise may justify faster greenlighting, but the sequel should still demonstrate a clear reason for players to return. Neither approach removes the need for cancellation criteria.
4. Choose rights before choosing partners
Negotiations should specify IP ownership, sequel rights, approval authority, recoupment, royalty definitions and termination outcomes before production scales. Giving up ownership can be rational when a partner supplies financing, distribution or marketing reach; retaining ownership is valuable only if the owner can support the project and exploit the asset.
5. Manage the release calendar
Concentrating several large launches in one quarter can create internal competition and marketing bottlenecks. Alternating established releases with original projects can diversify audience and timing exposure. This is a portfolio-management principle, not a guarantee that any particular sequencing will work.

When a publisher announces another sequel, the choice usually reflects a trade between forecastable demand and the cost of building a new audience. When it announces an original game, the company may be investing in ownership, creative control and a future franchise rather than rejecting commercial discipline. The same publisher can make both decisions in different deals, with different risk holders.
The most informative questions are therefore specific: Who owns the IP? Who is paying for development? Who controls marketing and release? What gets recouped before royalties? Can the project generate sequels or add-on content? A familiar logo answers only the first question players see; the contract and portfolio determine the economics underneath.
