Sheet Metal is mainly an Outpost material, not a substitute for Metal Parts. Keep it when you find it: the current item reference lists it as a common basic material for crafting and Outpost furniture, and says it cannot be recycled or salvaged. Metal Parts are the more flexible basic input, while Mechanical Components are refined intermediates made from other materials and used for weapons, attachments and additional recipes.
The names describe fictional inventory roles rather than real-world grades of steel or aluminum. The practical choice is therefore about what you are building next, where each item comes from and whether a recipe consumes it directly.

What Sheet Metal does in ARC Raiders
Sheet Metal occupies a narrow but important place in the crafting economy. The ARC Raiders Wiki classifies it as a common basic material and identifies Outpost furniture as a required use. That makes it an infrastructure resource: it supports projects at your base rather than serving as a universal substitute for every metal recipe.
The same reference lists scavenging and Celeste as sources. A PC Gamer guide published October 9, 2026 adds that industrial and technological areas are practical places to look and identifies the Sheltered Retreat project as another use. Because projects, events and loot tables can change between patches, treat the project names as current guide information rather than permanent rules.

Its most important restriction
Sheet Metal cannot be recycled or salvaged according to the current ARC Raiders Wiki entry. That single rule changes how you manage it. A spare piece is not equivalent to a recyclable surplus: once it is in your inventory, the reliable ways to obtain more are scavenging or purchasing it from Celeste, subject to the current game state.
How much an Outpost project asks for
The Wiki page, last modified in 2026, lists a requirement of 5 × Sheet Metal for an Outpost project. The exact project and requirement are patch-sensitive, so check the live project description before committing your stock. The number is a planning aid, not a guarantee that every Outpost upgrade uses five units.
Metal Parts: the broad basic input
Metal Parts fill the general-purpose role that Sheet Metal does not. The ARC Raiders Wiki describes them as one of the five basic crafting materials and says they are used to craft a wide range of items. If a recipe simply calls for a common metal input, Metal Parts are the more likely candidate; Sheet Metal should not be assumed to cover that requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere Metal Parts come from
The listed sources are broader than Sheet Metal’s. You can obtain Metal Parts through scavenging, recycling, Celeste, Scrappy and quests. Recycling matters here because Metal Parts can be generated from unwanted inventory, unlike Sheet Metal. Scrappy and quest rewards also give you routes that do not depend solely on searching industrial areas.
Vendor availability and quest rewards can be adjusted by updates. Use the source list as a set of options, then confirm the current item description or reward preview in your build.

Mechanical Components: refined, not interchangeable
Mechanical Components sit one step further along the crafting chain. They are not another name for Sheet Metal and are not a basic metal pickup. The item reference describes them as components used to craft weapons and attachments, among other items.
The Refiner recipe
The recipe listed by arcraiders.co requires 7 × Metal Parts plus 3 × Rubber Parts to produce Mechanical Components. The publication year for that reference is not stated, so verify the recipe in the current Refiner before planning a large batch.

Sheet Metal versus Metal Parts at a glance
The easiest way to avoid a costly mistake is to separate the materials by function rather than by the word “metal.”
| Decision point | Sheet Metal | Metal Parts |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Outpost-oriented construction material | Flexible basic input for many crafts |
| Can you recycle or salvage it? | No, according to the current Wiki entry | Recycling is listed as a source |
| Directly bought from Celeste? | Yes, listed as a source | Yes, listed as a source |
| Other named acquisition routes | Scavenging; industrial or technological areas in the October 9, 2026 guide | Scavenging, Scrappy and quests |
| Known project or recipe demand | Five units for a listed Outpost project; Sheltered Retreat is cited by a recent guide | Consumed directly by many crafts and by the Mechanical Components recipe |
| Best storage assumption | Hold for Outpost projects unless the live description says otherwise | Keep a working supply for immediate crafts or Refiner batches |
Should you keep Sheet Metal or spend it?
Keep it when an Outpost project is active or close
If your project list calls for Sheet Metal, reserve the required amount before using general crafting materials. The documented five-unit requirement is tied to one listed Outpost project, not a universal quota, so use the number shown by your current project as the final authority.
Holding Sheet Metal is especially sensible because recycling and salvage are unavailable. Spending a piece and expecting to recover it from dismantling is not a supported loop.

Spend Metal Parts more freely, but protect your Refiner plan
Metal Parts have several acquisition routes and can be recycled, so they are usually easier to replace than Sheet Metal. They are also the first ingredient in the documented Mechanical Components recipe. Before converting them, decide whether you need Mechanical Components for a weapon or attachment; seven Metal Parts are committed each time that recipe is used, along with three Rubber Parts.
Do not substitute one item because both names sound metallic
A recipe that specifies Sheet Metal is not established to accept Metal Parts, and a Mechanical Components recipe is not established to accept Sheet Metal. In ARC Raiders, item identity controls the recipe. Read the exact requirement instead of treating the names as grades of the same material.
Practical sourcing routes
1. Check Celeste before leaving for a run
Celeste is listed as a source for both Sheet Metal and Metal Parts. If Sheet Metal is available, buying it can be more predictable than relying on a particular loot area. Availability and quantities are subject to the live game version, so record what the vendor actually offers rather than assuming a fixed stock.
2. Search industrial and technological areas for Sheet Metal
The October 9, 2026 PC Gamer guide specifically points to industrial and technological areas. Use that guidance when your goal is Sheet Metal, but do not interpret it as a guarantee that every container or room contains the item. Loot distribution can be updated, and the guide does not establish a universal drop rate.
3. Scavenge broadly when you need Metal Parts
Metal Parts are listed as a scavenging source without the narrower area qualification attached to the recent Sheet Metal guidance. They can also come from recycling, Scrappy and quests, giving you several ways to replenish them between runs.

4. Separate conversion materials before using the Refiner
Mechanical Components require both Metal Parts and Rubber Parts in the documented recipe. If you are short on Rubber Parts, converting Metal Parts will not complete the intended production chain. Check both inputs and the current Refiner recipe before committing resources.
5. Review project and recipe text after updates
Keep a note of which project or craft you are preparing, then verify its live material list. This is particularly important for the five-unit Outpost requirement, the Sheltered Retreat use and the 7-to-3 Refiner ratio, all of which come from references that may not track every patch at the same time.
A resource-management workflow that avoids waste
- Identify the immediate goal. Decide whether you are building an Outpost project, crafting a general item or producing Mechanical Components. The goal determines which material should be protected.
- Reserve named requirements. Set aside the exact Sheet Metal shown by the project and the Metal Parts and Rubber Parts shown by the Refiner or craft. Do not count reserved items as spare inventory.
- Use recyclable inputs first when appropriate. Metal Parts have recycling listed as a source; Sheet Metal does not. If you must clear inventory, prioritize items that can be converted into Metal Parts rather than discarding or expecting to recover Sheet Metal.
- Choose the least uncertain acquisition route. Check Celeste for either basic material, search industrial or technological areas when specifically targeting Sheet Metal, and use Scrappy or quests for Metal Parts when those routes are available.
- Verify after every patch. Re-open the project, item and Refiner descriptions. A changed source, recipe or project cost can invalidate an older stockpile plan.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: recycling Sheet Metal
The current Wiki entry says Sheet Metal cannot be recycled or salvaged. If a menu does not offer that action, it is a material limitation rather than a missing button. Keep the item and obtain more through scavenging or Celeste instead.
Mistake: treating Mechanical Components as a pickup version of Sheet Metal
Mechanical Components are refined intermediates. Their documented production consumes Metal Parts and Rubber Parts, and their uses include weapons and attachments. Search for the component only when the recipe or item description calls for it; otherwise collect the listed basic inputs.

Mistake: spending every Metal Part because it is replaceable
Metal Parts have more acquisition routes than Sheet Metal, but they are still consumed by ordinary crafts and the Refiner recipe. Keep enough for the next confirmed craft before converting or recycling the remainder.

Mistake: treating a guide’s project name as timeless
The Sheltered Retreat use comes from a guide dated October 9, 2026. It is useful evidence about the current game period, not a promise that a later update will leave the project unchanged. Check the in-game project panel.
What the terminology means for new players
“Basic” does not mean “interchangeable.” Sheet Metal and Metal Parts are both described as basic materials, yet their acquisition and uses differ. “Refined” indicates a processing step: Mechanical Components are made at the Refiner from specified basic inputs. Think of the three as separate inventory classes:
- Sheet Metal: preserve for Outpost-oriented requirements.
- Metal Parts: use for broad crafting, recycling loops and Refiner inputs.
- Mechanical Components: produce when a weapon, attachment or other recipe explicitly requires the refined component.
This classification is an in-game planning tool only. It should not be read as a statement about the composition, quality or industrial use of real sheet metal.
How to verify a changing recipe or source
No official publisher source confirming the current material data was identified in the available references. The practical safeguard is to compare three pieces of live information before a major crafting decision: the item description, the project or recipe requirement and the vendor or Refiner screen. If they conflict with an older guide, follow the current in-game text and check official patch notes for an explanation.
Community references remain useful for locating likely sources, but they can update at different times. The ARC Raiders Wiki page cited here was last modified in 2026; the Mechanical Components reference does not state a publication year; and the Sheet Metal area guidance is dated October 9, 2026. Those dates explain why exact costs and locations should be treated as version-sensitive.
Quick decision checklist
- Does the active project explicitly request Sheet Metal? If yes, reserve it.
- Can the item be recycled or salvaged? Sheet Metal cannot according to the current item entry; Metal Parts have recycling listed as a source.
- Are you planning Mechanical Components? Reserve seven Metal Parts and three Rubber Parts for each documented Refiner batch, then confirm the live recipe.
- Are you searching for Sheet Metal? Check Celeste and industrial or technological areas.
- Are you short on Metal Parts? Consider scavenging, recycling, Scrappy and quests in addition to Celeste.
- Did the game update? Recheck project costs, vendor stock, loot areas and Refiner recipes.
Bottom line for your inventory
Keep Sheet Metal unless the current project screen gives you a clear reason to spend it: its Outpost role is specific and it cannot be recycled or salvaged. Treat Metal Parts as the flexible workhorse, while remembering that they are also the feedstock for Mechanical Components. Produce the refined component only for a confirmed craft, and verify all exact quantities and project names in the live version because the available references are community-maintained or guide-based rather than an official, permanent materials list.
