If Windows says it is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Office installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs in the Office installation tree, not normally in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is associated especially with older MSI and Click-to-Run Office releases, including Office 2010 and Office 2013, although current Office installations can place it inside a virtualized Office path.

A Click-to-Run installation may instead use a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootvfsProgramFilesCommonX64Microsoft SharedOfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatformOSPPCEXT.DLL
These are examples, not universal paths. The correct location depends on whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit, whether it uses MSI or Click-to-Run, and which Office release is installed.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because osppcext.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because osppcext.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading osppcext.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting osppcext.dll.”
- “osppcext.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A message saying that the specified module could not be found does not always prove that osppcext.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the Office DLL.

The most likely causes are:
- Office was damaged or incompletely installed.
- An Office update or repair failed.
- Office was removed incompletely.
- Cleanup software deleted an Office file.
- Antivirus quarantined the file.
- Conflicting 32-bit and 64-bit, MSI and Click-to-Run, or multiple Office installations are present.
- Windows components or system files are damaged.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office first
Office Repair is the safest and most likely solution because Setup restores the correct file, dependencies, permissions, and registration for your installation.
For Microsoft 365 and Click-to-Run Office
- Save your work and close Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and other Office programs.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365 or your installed Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Click Repair and confirm.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
Quick Repair is faster, but it replaces less installation content. Choose Online Repair when osppcext.dll is missing, corrupted, or repeatedly reported during startup.
For MSI-based Office
Older Office installations may show a traditional repair dialog.
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the Office suite.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair or Repair Office.
- Select Continue.
- Restart Windows.
Try launching the Office application that produced the error. If it opens normally and no licensing or activation error appears, the repair succeeded.
If Repair fails, note the exact message and continue with the reinstall steps below. Do not copy a replacement file into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Check whether Defender quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected Office file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving Office,
OSPPCEXT.DLL, or the folder where Office is installed. - Open the relevant event and review its path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file automatically.
- Verify that the file was in the genuine Office installation directory and that the Office installation is legitimate.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.
- If the file is confirmed as an Office file and the detection is incorrect, follow the available Windows Security restore or allow options.
- Run Office Repair afterward so Setup can replace the file correctly.
A similarly named DLL in a temporary folder, Downloads, or a user-writable directory is suspicious. Do not allow it merely because its filename matches osppcext.dll.
Fix 3: Remove conflicting Office installations
Mixed installations can leave incompatible files and licensing components behind.

Remove an obsolete or conflicting Office installation only after confirming which product your organization or Microsoft account uses. Then:
- Uninstall the conflicting Office product.
- Restart Windows.
- If normal removal fails, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall guidance.
- Restart again.
- Reinstall from your Microsoft account, your organization’s deployment source, or original licensed media using Microsoft’s Office reinstall instructions.
Do not install 32-bit and 64-bit Office side by side unless the specific supported deployment allows it. Office architecture also matters for add-ins. An add-in that requires 32-bit Office may fail after switching to 64-bit Office even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
For older Office releases, Microsoft’s Office 2010 installation guidance explains the architecture requirements. Office 2010 is unsupported, so replacing it with a supported Office release is generally safer when licensing and application compatibility permit.

Use this path when the error appeared while Office was installing, updating, or being removed.
Before reinstalling:
- Restart Windows to clear a pending reboot.
- Confirm there is enough free disk space.
- Temporarily check whether security software is blocking Office Setup.
- Do not grant
Everyonefull control over the Office folder as a general fix. - Record whether the installer reports Error 1310 or another exact code.
Then:
- Uninstall Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- If removal is incomplete, use Microsoft’s official uninstall troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Reinstall Office from an official Microsoft account, organization deployment package, or licensed installation media.
- Restart after installation.
- Open an Office application and complete activation.
If installation repeatedly fails while writing OSPPCEXT.DLL, check the target folder’s permissions, available disk space, pending restart state, and Defender Protection History. Avoid broad permission changes because they can weaken the machine without repairing Office.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components as a secondary check
osppcext.dll is an Office file, so SFC and DISM are not guaranteed to restore it. Use them when other Windows programs also show missing or corrupted system-file errors, or when Office Repair reports broader component problems.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair again if the DLL error remains.
DISM should run before SFC. Success means Windows repaired protected system components, not necessarily that Office restored osppcext.dll.
If manually hunting through repair commands and logs is becoming repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and Office Repair remains the definitive fix for this Office-specific file.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the timing points to one
A graphics or printer driver is not a normal source of an osppcext.dll file error. Check drivers only if Office began failing immediately after a driver change, Windows upgrade, or hardware installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver to search automatically, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart Windows and test Office.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version performs driver installation, but updating drivers is not a substitute for repairing Office when this DLL is missing.
Windows Features are also unlikely to restore this file. Do not enable random .NET Framework or legacy Windows components unless a separate application error specifically identifies that dependency.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after cleanup software, a failed installation, a driver change, or another identifiable system change.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not change personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to Office Repair or reinstall Office instead.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
There is no official Microsoft osppcext.dll redistributable download. A downloaded copy may have the wrong Office generation, architecture, language, dependencies, or signature. It may also contain malware or leave the damaged Office installation unresolved.

Use Office Repair, official Microsoft installation media, your Microsoft account, or your organization’s deployment source.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
osppcext.dll should remain in the Office installation tree. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can create version conflicts and servicing problems.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing Office Software Protection Platform file should be restored by Office Setup, not manually registered. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s purpose.
If the error still remains
Collect this information before contacting Microsoft support or organizational IT:
- The exact error text and error code
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
- Office edition and version or build
- MSI or Click-to-Run installation type
- 32-bit or 64-bit Office architecture
- The full path where Windows expects or finds
osppcext.dll - Whether other Office files are also missing
- Recent Office installation, update, cleanup, or antivirus events
- Relevant entries in Windows Security Protection History and Event Viewer
If the file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows, verify its path and Microsoft signature, then run Office Repair. A copy in a temporary or user-writable folder should not be trusted.
FAQ
Is osppcext.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Office component associated with licensing, activation, and validation. It should not normally be treated like a shared Windows DLL.
Should I run SFC first?
Usually no. Start with Office Online Repair or MSI Office Repair. Run DISM and SFC when other Windows components also appear damaged or when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
Can I use regsvr32 osppcext.dll?
Generally no. Office Setup should restore this component and its dependencies. Manual registration does not repair a damaged Office installation.
Does “module could not be found” always mean the DLL is missing?
No. The named file may exist while one of its dependencies is unavailable. Office Repair is safer than copying a second DLL into the folder.

No. Office 2010 can still be installed with valid media and a product key, but it is unsupported. Move to a supported Office release when possible.
Will Device Manager fix this error?
Not normally. Device Manager is relevant only when the failure began after a driver or hardware change. It does not restore Office licensing files.
