If apoint.dll is missing, first identify which program requests it and whether the message appears during startup or when opening an application. Then check the laptop model, Windows version, and whether the installed system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The safest repair is usually to reinstall the laptop manufacturer’s Alps touchpad or pointing-device driver. Do not download an isolated copy of apoint.dll and place it in System32.

What apoint.dll is
apoint.dll is a component of the Alps Pointing-device Driver, historically supplied by Alps Electric Co., Ltd. It supports Alps touchpads and related utilities, including pointing-device settings, scrolling, gestures, and other OEM integrations.
It is a third-party driver component, not a protected Windows system DLL. Laptop manufacturers including Dell, Lenovo, and others have distributed Alps touchpad packages with their own customisations.

- Compatible P/N: For L63599-001
- For SB459A22HA .
- Package include: 1x Touchpad.
The file may appear under a directory similar to:
C:Program Filesapoint2kapoint.dll
That is an observed installation path, not a universal location. The exact folder depends on the laptop manufacturer and driver package.
Microsoft’s Update Catalog also lists Alps pointing-device drivers, including AMD64 packages.
Messages associated with apoint.dll
You may see one of these messages:
- “Failed to load Apoint.DLL. Alps Pointing device application has stopped”
- “The program can’t start because Apoint.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Apoint.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find Apoint.dll.”
- “Apoint.dll is either missing or corrupt.”
- “The application or DLL Apoint.dll is not a valid Windows image.”
The wording depends on which Alps executable or startup entry is loading the file. A startup error usually points to the Alps utility or driver package. If an unrelated application reports the file, identify that application before making changes.

This is the most likely fix when the touchpad, gestures, or scrolling also stopped working.
Identify the laptop model
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Note System Manufacturer, System Model, and System Type.
- If the laptop has a service tag or serial number, note that as well.
Open the manufacturer’s official support page and search by the exact model or service tag. Choose the Touchpad, Pointing Device, Mouse, Keyboard and Input Devices, or UltraNav category.
Download the package that matches:
- The exact laptop model
- Your Windows edition
- Your Windows version
- Your system architecture
Do not select a package simply because it contains a newer-looking apoint.dll. Known file variants include both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, and the version list is not a complete official catalogue.
Install the package
- Open File Explorer and go to Downloads.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Choose Install or Repair if the installer provides that option.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, test the touchpad, two-finger scrolling, gestures, and any manufacturer-specific buttons. If the error no longer appears and the touchpad features work, the driver repair is complete.

If the installer reports that the package is incompatible, stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the model, Windows version, and architecture. A generic Alps package may not contain the OEM customisations required by that laptop.
Manually comparing several driver packages is slow, especially after a clean Windows installation. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale or mismatched drivers and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation functions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 2: Repair the device through Device Manager
Use Device Manager when the Alps package is installed but Windows shows a warning, or when the touchpad disappeared after an update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Also check Human Interface Devices.
- Look for an Alps, touchpad, pointing-device, HID, or unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
If Roll Back Driver is available and the problem began immediately after a driver update, select it and restart.

- Right-click the touchpad device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct OEM package from the manufacturer.
Windows may reinstall a basic pointing-device driver after restarting. That can restore cursor movement but not necessarily Alps gestures or control-panel features. Install the complete OEM package afterward.
If no touchpad device appears, select View > Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Do not delete unrelated entries or random registry keys. If the device remains absent, check the laptop’s firmware settings for a disabled internal pointing device and confirm that the hardware is detected.
Fix 3: Check whether a leftover startup entry is causing the message
Sometimes the touchpad works normally while Windows displays the error at every sign-in. This usually means the Alps utility was partly removed, but its startup command remains.
First reinstall the correct OEM package. That restores the missing executable and DLL if the touchpad software is still needed.

If the laptop no longer uses Alps hardware:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for Alps, Pointing Device, Touchpad, or an OEM input utility.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check startup items:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Startup apps.
- Look for an Alps or pointing-device utility.
- Disable it only after confirming that the touchpad does not depend on it.
- Restart and test the system.
If the startup entry is orphaned but not visible in Startup apps, use the original OEM uninstaller or the manufacturer’s support instructions. Avoid deleting registry entries manually unless you know exactly which entry is obsolete.
Fix 4: Check Windows Update and recovery history
A Windows update, recovery operation, cloned drive, or restored system image can expose an old Alps startup reference. Lenovo systems have also had reported cases involving Windows updates or recovery and the Alps pointing-device application.
Check for driver updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant touchpad or pointing-device update if it matches the laptop.
- Restart.
If the problem began immediately after a specific Windows update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the change. Do not remove updates casually. First look for a newer OEM driver. If the manufacturer documents that the update is incompatible and no driver is available, use the manufacturer’s rollback guidance.
For a system-image restoration or cloning problem, reinstall the driver on the restored Windows installation. An image can retain a startup command pointing to a folder that existed on the original drive but not on the current system.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine apoint.dll if it considers the file suspicious or if the driver package was damaged.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
apoint.dll, an Alps executable, or the touchpad installer. - Confirm the original file path and source.
Do not restore the file solely because its name is correct. Run a full malware scan first. If the file came from the laptop manufacturer’s official signed package, reinstall that package instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for apoint.dll. If the official installer is repeatedly blocked, check the security product’s details and obtain a fresh installer from the manufacturer.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC is not the first-line repair for apoint.dll because the file normally belongs to a third-party driver, not Windows. Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, updates are damaged, or Windows reports broader corruption.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store used by SFC. These commands may repair Windows dependencies, but they will not necessarily recreate an Alps installation that was removed.
Repeating system scans without knowing whether the driver package is missing can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs attention; repairs require the full version, and the official OEM driver remains the correct fix for a missing Alps package.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Use System Restore when the error began after installing a driver, update, utility, or system image and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains how restore points reverse driver, software, and system-setting changes without normally affecting personal files.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why copying apoint.dll or using regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not copy apoint.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An unrelated application folder
That can create an architecture mismatch, leave the driver incomplete, or introduce an untrusted file. A touchpad driver package includes more than one DLL and may also install services, configuration files, drivers, and startup components.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that support COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation. There is no established need to manually register an ordinary Alps driver component.

FAQ
Is apoint.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Alps pointing-device software and laptop OEM driver packages.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first repair. apoint.dll is an Alps touchpad component, not a Visual C++ 2015 runtime DLL. Install the correct touchpad package instead.
Does a 64-bit Windows system always need the 64-bit file?
The driver package must match the hardware, Windows architecture, and OEM software. Do not choose an isolated DLL based only on whether Windows is 64-bit.
What if the touchpad still works?
The error may come from an obsolete Alps utility rather than the touchpad driver itself. Reinstall the OEM package, or uninstall the obsolete Alps software if the laptop no longer uses it.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if the Alps driver is no longer available?
Check the laptop manufacturer’s archived support pages, Windows Update optional driver updates, and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Do not substitute a random DLL download.
Could the file be malware?
A filename alone proves nothing. Check the file’s path, digital signature, security history, and installer source. A legitimate Alps file should come from the laptop’s OEM driver package or a trusted Windows driver channel.
When should I contact the manufacturer?
Contact support when the exact model has no compatible driver, the touchpad is absent from Device Manager, firmware does not detect it, or the installer repeatedly reports incompatibility.
