Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe exact message may say “ossupport.dll is missing,” “ossupport.dll was not found,” or “Error loading ossupport.dll.” The safest fix for ossupport.dll is to identify the old game or application requesting it and restore that program from its original installer or verified installation media.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into C:WindowsSystem32. ossupport.dll is not a standard Windows component. The strongest public evidence associates it with the setup files for Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix, although catalog records also label it “KeyCheckDLL DLL” and “KeyCheckDLL Dynamic Link Library.”

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The error appears while installing Soldier of Fortune II: copy the original setup files to a local folder, then run the installer there.
- The error appears when an old game or application starts: repair or reinstall that specific program.
- The file was quarantined: review Windows Security Protection History and restore it only when the source is trusted.
- The installer says “Could not open string file”: do not run it directly from a CD or read-only mounted image. Copy the setup files locally first.
- Another error names Visual C++, DirectX, or a Windows DLL: repair that named dependency separately.
- Many unrelated programs report missing DLLs: investigate Windows corruption, malware, disk problems, or a damaged user profile.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup, driver change, or installation: consider System Restore after checking the affected programs.
What ossupport.dll is
ossupport.dll appears to be an application-local support DLL used by older third-party software. It is not identified by Microsoft as a Windows system file, and it is not part of the normal Visual C++ Redistributable packages.

The clearest installation evidence places both ossupport.dll and ossupport.txt in the Setup directory on a Soldier of Fortune II game CD. In that installation scenario, running Setup.exe directly from the CD can produce:

Could not open string file
The documented workaround is to copy the required setup files to a temporary local directory and run the installer from there.
Some DLL catalog records describe the file as KeyCheckDLL DLL and associate it with KeyCheckDLL Dynamic Link Library. Those records do not establish a verified publisher, universal version, architecture, or official standalone download. Treat that description as catalog metadata rather than proof that every file carrying the name is the same binary.
Fix 1: Restore the original game or application files
This is the most likely solution because ossupport.dll appears to belong beside the application or installer that uses it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you have an original CD or DVD
- Insert the original disc.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select the optical drive under This PC.
- Open the
Setupfolder. - Create a temporary folder on your local drive, such as:
text
C:OldGameSetup - Copy
ossupport.dllandossupport.txtfrom the disc’sSetupfolder intoC:OldGameSetup. - Copy the other installer files from the same setup location if the installer requires them.
- Open
C:OldGameSetup. - Right-click
Setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Complete the installation.
Running from a local folder matters when the installer expects to read support files from its current working directory. It also avoids problems caused by optical media, read-only images, or a damaged disc.
If you use an ISO or archived installer
Mount or extract the image, but do not assume that launching the installer from a read-only mounted location is safe for an older setup program.
- Right-click the ISO and select Mount, or extract the archive with your trusted archive utility.
- Open the mounted or extracted contents.
- Locate the
Setupdirectory. - Copy the complete installer contents to a writable local folder.
- Confirm that
ossupport.dllandossupport.txtare present in the copied setup files. - Run
Setup.exefrom the local folder as administrator.
If the files are missing from the disc, ISO, or archive, the media may be incomplete or damaged. Obtain a clean copy from the original developer, publisher, official store, or another verified source for the software. Do not replace one missing installer file with a random DLL from a download site.
If the application is already installed
Use the program’s repair option if it provides one:
- Press
Win + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select the application, and choose Advanced options or Modify, depending on what the program provides.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the entire application from its original installer or verified store. A complete reinstall restores the DLL together with related files, configuration data, and the correct application directory.

How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if:
- The installer completes without “Could not open string file.”
- The game or application starts without naming
ossupport.dll. - The file is present beside the installer or executable that uses it.
- The program does not immediately remove or quarantine the file again.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the antivirus and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Old game installers are often unsigned or use outdated installation technology. Windows Security may quarantine an application-local DLL, but the detection cannot be judged safely from the filename alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that names
ossupport.dllor the affected installer. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file when all of these are true:
- You recognize the application.
- The installer came from original media, an official store, or a verified source.
- The file was located in the expected application or setup directory.
- You are confident the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If the file came from an unknown download site, do not restore it. Remove the download and reinstall the application from clean, trusted media instead.
If the file was deleted rather than quarantined, reinstalling the complete application is safer than trying to reconstruct the DLL separately.
Fix 3: Check the application directory and working folder
A missing-file error can occur even when a copy exists somewhere else on the computer. Windows does not normally search arbitrary folders for application DLLs.
- Right-click the shortcut used to launch the program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the value in Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Check whether
ossupport.dllis in the same folder as the program or installer that requests it. - Do not copy the file from another unrelated application.
For an installer, run it from the folder containing its complete setup files. For a game, preserve the original directory structure. If the program was moved manually from another computer or drive, reinstalling it is usually more reliable than copying individual files.
The error “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that ossupport.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. In that case, replacing ossupport.dll repeatedly will not solve the underlying problem.
Fix 4: Repair a dependency named by the full error
Read the complete message carefully. If a second message identifies a Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or Windows system DLL, repair that named component rather than assuming ossupport.dll is the dependency.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the architecture required by the application:
- Older 32-bit games generally require the x86 runtime.
- A 64-bit application requires the x64 runtime.
- Installing a 64-bit package does not automatically replace a missing 32-bit runtime.
Do not claim that installing Visual C++ restores ossupport.dll. The Microsoft packages do not identify this file as part of their runtime.
DirectX
If the game reports a missing DirectX component, install or repair DirectX using Microsoft’s official installation material or the game’s original installer. Do not download a single DirectX DLL from an unverified source.
.NET Framework
Some older setup programs require a particular .NET Framework feature. To check the built-in Windows features:
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
text
optionalfeatures - Press Enter.
- Review the available .NET Framework entries.
- Enable the feature explicitly required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Windows Features will not recreate an application-specific ossupport.dll. Use this step only when the installer or its full error message identifies .NET as the missing requirement.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are appropriate when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows reports damaged system files, or other protected components are missing. They are not normally able to recreate a third-party game DLL that was never part of Windows.
Run DISM before SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft’s guidance for these commands is available in its System File Checker repair instructions.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, and other Windows-related failures stop. If ossupport.dll is still missing from the application directory, reinstall the affected game or application.
When manually running DISM and SFC repeatedly becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for its own missing DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 6: Update drivers only when the error points to hardware or graphics
A graphics or audio driver problem can prevent an old game from starting, but updating a driver does not normally restore ossupport.dll. Use this fix when the complete error also mentions DirectX, a display adapter, sound hardware, or a device initialization failure.

- Test the game.
For a clean driver update, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page and select the exact Windows version and device model. Do not install a driver intended for a different device or architecture.
Manually hunting through hardware models and driver releases can be time-consuming, especially when several devices are stale; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers, while the actual driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns ossupport.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the error started immediately after a cleanup utility, driver installation, update, or software removal.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
text
rstrui.exe - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, registry data, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal files. It may not restore an application-local DLL if the original installer or game files were already damaged, so reinstall the affected program if the error remains.
Do not copy ossupport.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not use either Windows system folder as a general DLL storage location:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
These folders are managed for Windows components and architecture-specific system files. An application-support DLL should normally remain beside the executable or installer that loads it.
Do not copy the file into both folders. That can create version conflicts, hide the real installation problem, and make future troubleshooting harder.

Does regsvr32 apply?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary game support or installer DLL may not provide that interface.
Microsoft documents the command and its behavior on the official regsvr32 reference page.
A failed command such as:
regsvr32 ossupport.dll
does not prove that the file is corrupt. It may simply mean the DLL is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Do not register it unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires that action.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A replacement downloaded from an unknown DLL site can have:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- Altered or malicious contents
- A filename that does not match the application’s original file
It may also create a false sense of repair while leaving the installer incomplete. The safe sources are the original game disc, a clean verified ISO or archive, the application’s official installer, or an official store that distributes the program.
Never disable antivirus merely to install an unknown DLL.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the complete original installer in a backed-up local folder.
- Preserve the application’s original directory structure.
- Do not delete setup support files after extracting an old game installer.
- Keep Windows Security enabled.
- Record the application name and source before restoring a quarantined file.
- Avoid moving old games between computers by copying only their executable files.
- Keep a copy of the original disc or verified installation image.
- If the game requires compatibility settings, record them with the installation notes.
FAQ
Is ossupport.dll part of Windows?
No reliable Microsoft source identifies it as a Windows system file. It is best treated as an application-local DLL associated with older third-party software.
Which game is most strongly associated with it?
The strongest independent installation evidence associates ossupport.dll and ossupport.txt with the Setup directory of a Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix CD. That evidence supports restoring the original setup files, but it does not prove that every file with this name belongs to that game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why do search results call it KeyCheckDLL DLL?
Third-party catalog records use that description and the product label “KeyCheckDLL Dynamic Link Library.” The records do not provide a verified publisher or establish that every catalogued copy is the same binary.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if the full error identifies a Visual C++ runtime or another application dependency. Visual C++ is not established as the source of ossupport.dll.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Run them when multiple Windows components or unrelated programs are failing. They will not normally recreate an application DLL that was missing from the game installer.
What if antivirus quarantined the file?
Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore it only when the file came from trusted original media and its path matches the expected application or setup directory. Otherwise reinstall from clean media.
