wdminterface.dll errors usually appear when an older application starts and Windows cannot load its private WDMInterface component. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that requested the file, not to download a replacement DLL into a Windows system folder.

The error messages you may see

Reported versions of this error include:

  • “This application failed to start because wdminterface.dll was not found.”
  • “The file wdminterface.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: wdminterface.dll. Please install the application again.”
  • “Error loading wdminterface.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because wdminterface.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Failed to load wdminterface.dll.”

The exact wording can vary by application and Windows version. These messages do not prove that Windows itself owns the file.

The 60-second answer

wdminterface.dll is an old third-party application DLL. Its internal description is WDMInterface, and it is associated with a product described as WDMInterface Dynamic Link Library. The strongest historical association is with legacy DVB Workshop or DVinGena software, although the original publisher’s current installer could not be verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not identified as a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or Visual C++ Redistributable file. Historical file records have treated it as a legacy 32-bit DLL, but any copy found online should be verified rather than trusted by filename alone.

  • 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

Start with these steps:

  1. Identify the application that displays the error.
  2. Use its repair, verify, or reinstall option.
  3. Check Windows Security quarantine.
  4. Reinstall only the application’s documented prerequisites.
  5. Investigate dependencies if the DLL is present but still will not load.
  6. Use Windows repair commands only when broader Windows problems are also visible.

Do not begin by copying wdminterface.dll to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

What application installed wdminterface.dll?

The DLL name is a component name, not necessarily the name of the application listed in Windows. The file is most strongly associated with older DVB-related software and the WDMInterface software attributed in historical records to DVinGena. That association is not the same as a verified current vendor download.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Read the error dialog carefully

The title bar or surrounding text may name the program. Write down the executable name if it appears, such as an application ending in .exe.

Check the shortcut

Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in. The target usually reveals the application’s installation directory.

Check the file path

If wdminterface.dll already exists, search for it in File Explorer:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for wdminterface.dll.
  4. Right-click a result and choose Open file location.
  5. Note whether it is beside a recognizable application executable.

A private DLL normally belongs in the same directory as the executable that loads it. The Windows DLL search order checks the application directory before the Windows system directories. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search-order documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Event Viewer

If the dialog does not identify the program:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
  6. Look for an error at the time the application failed.
  7. Check the General and Details tabs for the application name or faulting module.

Event Viewer may identify the executable even when the popup only names the DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original application

This is the most likely solution because wdminterface.dll is an application component rather than a Windows component.

Try the application’s repair option

Some installers and launchers provide Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair functions.

  1. Open the application’s launcher.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Open its settings or menu.
  4. Choose Verify files, Repair, or an equivalent option.
  5. Wait for the operation to finish.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the application again.

If the launcher reports that files were restored, the repair worked when the program starts without the DLL error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from the original installer

If there is no repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application that produces the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run the original installer as administrator.
  9. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  10. Install to the normal application directory.
  11. Start the program again.

Microsoft describes the standard uninstall and reinstall process in Uninstall or remove apps and programs.

If the program stores settings or licenses, check its documentation before uninstalling. An uninstall may remove application data even when personal files remain untouched.

If reinstalling does not help

A reinstall may not replace a file if:

  • The installer is incomplete or damaged.
  • Windows Security removes the DLL again.
  • The program is installed in a different directory than the shortcut expects.
  • A dependency of the DLL is missing.
  • The application is incompatible with the current Windows installation.
  • The installer contains an architecture mismatch.

Do not immediately copy a random DLL over the installed file. Continue with the checks below.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine an old DLL even when the application itself is legitimate. A missing file after a security scan is a useful clue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
  5. Expand any detection associated with the application or wdminterface.dll.
  6. Confirm the file path and detection details.

Only restore or allow the file when all of these are true:

  • It came from the original trusted installer.
  • The path belongs to the application you intended to install.
  • You have scanned the installer and system.
  • You understand why Windows Security flagged it.

If the original installer is available, reinstalling is safer than restoring a single quarantined DLL. Microsoft explains quarantine and allowed items in Protection history in Windows Security.

If the detection suggests malware, do not restore the file. Run a full scan first. A DLL’s name and location do not prove that it is safe.

Fix 3: Confirm the DLL is in the application directory

A private application DLL should normally be beside the executable that loads it, not in a shared Windows directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have a verified copy from the original installer or backup:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Check whether the program’s main .exe is present.
  3. Place the verified DLL in that same application folder.
  4. Do not place it in System32, SysWOW64, or several directories.
  5. Start the application again.

Manual copying is appropriate only when the file comes from the original trusted software, matches the application’s expected architecture and version, and can be validated by its signature or hash.

Downloading an isolated DLL from a random DLL website is risky. The file may contain malware, be the wrong build, have the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. The safe sources are the original developer’s installer, a trustworthy archived installer, or a verified backup of the application.

If no trustworthy installer or backup exists, do not treat an arbitrary copy as a solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency

The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wdminterface.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the DLL but fail to load one of the DLLs it depends on.

A DLL can fail because of:

  • Another missing DLL.
  • A damaged dependency.
  • An incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit module.
  • A missing exported function.
  • File corruption.
  • A blocked or quarantined dependency.

First reinstall the parent application and its documented prerequisites. If the problem remains, use a dependency-analysis utility from a trusted source to inspect the application’s imports. Microsoft provides background on this type of failure in Dynamic-link library troubleshooting.

Do not assume that the named file is the only missing component.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Historical records identify wdminterface.dll as a legacy 32-bit file, but this should be confirmed against the genuine installer or original file. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit build of its private DLL, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not replace a verified 32-bit application DLL with an unverified x64 copy. Conversely, do not assume that every file with this name is interchangeable.

To check the application type:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the application if it opens far enough to appear.
  4. Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns if needed.
  5. Check whether the process is marked as a 32-bit process.

You can also inspect the original installer or application documentation. Architecture information from an unrelated archive is not sufficient to validate a replacement file.

Visual C++ Redistributables are architecture-specific. If the application explicitly requires Visual C++, install the package matching the application, commonly x86 for a 32-bit program. Microsoft documents the supported packages in Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and explains architecture selection in Determining which DLLs to redistribute.

Fix 6: Install a runtime only when the error names it

There is no verified evidence that wdminterface.dll is part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Reinstalling those products will not normally restore this private application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the following rule:

  • If the error names MSVCP*.dll, MSVCR*.dll, or VCRUNTIME*.dll, investigate Visual C++ Redistributables.
  • If it names a legacy DirectX file, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
  • If it names a .NET assembly or framework component, use the application’s documented .NET requirement.
  • If it names only wdminterface.dll, repair or reinstall the parent application first.

The DirectX package can install legacy DirectX SDK libraries, but it does not restore wdminterface.dll.

Fix 7: Reinstall or update a related driver only when indicated

WDM-related software may interact with older capture hardware or media devices, but the DLL itself should not be treated as a Windows driver. Do not replace it through Device Manager.

Check Device Manager only if the application also reports a missing, disabled, or malfunctioning capture device:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Sound, video and game controllers or Imaging devices.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For older hardware, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or the application’s original documentation. Avoid generic driver packages that do not identify the exact device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually hunting through hardware pages and matching old driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing

Because wdminterface.dll is not identified as a Windows file, system repair is not the first step. Use it when several unrelated programs show missing-DLL errors, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the application reinstall fails alongside broader system symptoms.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not recreate a private DLL that belongs to an old application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeatedly running these commands without identifying what changed is unlikely to fix an application-specific missing file. If you want help locating corrupted Windows components without manually comparing logs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan reports findings, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix for wdminterface.dll.

Check optional Windows features only when the application requires them

Some legacy applications require a Windows feature such as an older .NET component.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the features enabled on the system.
  5. Enable a feature only when the application documentation specifically requires it.
  6. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable random features as a substitute for reinstalling the application.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is relevant when the program worked immediately before a driver installation, Windows change, cleanup operation, or other system modification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the affected applications and drivers.
  8. Select Close, then Next.
  9. Confirm the restore.

System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it normally does not change personal files. Microsoft explains the process in System Restore.

Use it as a rollback option, not as a way to obtain an isolated DLL.

Do you need regsvr32?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command and does not download, recreate, or repair a missing file.

Do not run this merely because the filename ends in .dll:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 wdminterface.dll

It is appropriate only when the original application’s documentation explicitly says that the component must be registered and the DLL is confirmed to support registration. Microsoft describes the requirement in Implementing DllRegisterServer and documents the command in regsvr32 syntax.

If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean the DLL is broken. It may simply be a normal private library that was never designed for COM registration.

What if the original application is obsolete?

If the original program is no longer supported and no trustworthy installer or backup is available, the safest choices are limited:

  • Restore the application from a verified system backup.
  • Locate the original installation media or a trustworthy archived installer.
  • Replace the obsolete application with supported software.
  • Run the legacy application in a suitable supported legacy environment.

Do not solve an unavailable installer by collecting DLLs from unrelated download pages. Even a genuine-looking file may be the wrong build or may require dependencies that are also missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is wdminterface.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with an old third-party application component named WDMInterface.

Is wdminterface.dll safe?

The filename alone cannot establish safety. Verify the file’s source, path, signature, and relationship to the original application. A file restored from a trusted installer is more credible than an isolated download.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. A private application DLL normally belongs in the application’s own directory. Copying it into a system folder can cause version conflicts and does not repair missing dependencies.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the error or application documentation identifies that runtime. Those packages are not verified sources for wdminterface.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?

Windows may have found wdminterface.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. Architecture mismatch, corruption, missing exports, or a blocked dependency can produce the same message.

Does regsvr32 fix the error?

Not normally. Use it only when the original documentation confirms that this DLL is a registerable component.

What if only this one old program fails?

Repair or reinstall that program first. Windows repair commands are less relevant when every other application works normally.

What if many unrelated applications show missing-DLL errors?

Check Windows Security, storage health, recent system changes, and Windows component integrity. Then run DISM followed by SFC and investigate possible malware or profile corruption.
