What is actually known about Over the Hill upgrades?
Over the Hill is a physics-focused off-road driving game in which you recover vehicles, explore trails and points of interest, and spend Pebbles on vehicle upgrades. The clearest upgrade guidance available is limited but useful: tire upgrades improve grip, while winching is primarily a problem of line geometry and anchor access rather than raw pulling power.

Most other upgrade questions remain open. There is no published table showing the price, percentage benefit, handling change, durability gain, or vehicle-specific compatibility of engine, suspension, or other parts. That means any list claiming that one of those components is always the best first purchase would go beyond the currently documented evidence.

Choose the first upgrade from the problem you are trying to solve

Tires are the evidence-backed first choice for traction problems
What the tire upgrade is confirmed to do
Funselektor developer Pete_MG described the effect plainly: “if you upgrade the tires then the grip becomes higher.” That is the only directly documented performance axis for the upgrade system in the available pre-release material. If your wheels spin on a slope, the vehicle washes sideways in a turn, or you lose contact on a loose surface, tires are the logical first experiment.
Do not convert that statement into a made-up percentage. No measured grip increase, grade threshold, braking distance, or guarantee that a named trail becomes climbable has been published. A tire purchase should therefore be treated as a targeted handling change, not as proof that every difficult route will become easy.
How to test whether tires solved your problem
- Choose one obstacle that reliably causes the failure: the same slope, rut, mud patch or loose turn.
- Record the conditions. Note whether the weather is wet, whether the tires are already worn or damaged, and whether the vehicle has taken impact damage.
- Attempt the obstacle with the current setup using a consistent approach speed and line.
- Install the tire upgrade, then repeat the approach as closely as possible.
- Judge the result by the failure you were targeting—less wheelspin, a steadier line or more controlled climbing—not by a single successful attempt.
Weather and tire condition both affect grip, according to the official FAQ information collected for the game. A dry, undamaged run and a wet, worn-tire run are not equivalent tests. If the result changes between attempts, record those conditions instead of concluding that the upgrade has a fixed, universal effect.
A winch is a recovery tool, not a confirmed strength upgrade
Why a winch can fail even when it works correctly
Winching depends on geometry. The vehicle must have a reachable tree or another usable anchor, and the line must be able to pull from a useful direction. If the anchor is too far away, blocked, or positioned so that the line only drags the vehicle sideways, a stronger-looking winch would not solve the underlying problem.
In the cited developer AMA, stronger winches were not planned as an upgrade benefit at that time. Do not buy a winch expecting a documented increase in pulling force. First check whether you can reach an anchor and whether repositioning the vehicle or changing the line angle creates a better pull.

When portable equipment is the better answer
The game includes portable winching equipment in the demo, including equipment described as a portable anchor or jack. Use that equipment when the obstacle has no nearby natural anchor. It addresses missing-anchor geometry: you create or carry an attachment point close enough to use. It does not raise horsepower, alter tire grip, or make a damaged vehicle perform normally.
A practical recovery sequence is to stop spinning the wheels, look for the nearest stable anchor, place or select portable equipment if no anchor is reachable, then winch from a direction that helps the vehicle climb or straighten. Repeated throttle input while the line is poorly positioned can dig the vehicle in further and waste time.

The official FAQ information states that damage reduces performance and that repair kits are limited. A vehicle that feels weaker after hard impacts may not need a new upgrade at all. Repair it first, then repeat the same test. Otherwise you risk spending Pebbles to compensate for a temporary damaged state and misreading the part’s effect.
Because repair kits are a limited resource, use them deliberately. Preserve a kit when the vehicle is still controllable and the next route has a safe cabin or other checkpoint, but do not attempt a demanding climb with a badly damaged vehicle and then blame the tires or suspension when performance drops. The correct order is condition check, repair if necessary, controlled test, and only then a new upgrade.
Why there is no confirmed engine-versus-suspension order
Players often want a simple sequence such as engine, suspension, tires, then winch. The available material does not support one. Prices, complete effects and per-vehicle specifications for engine, suspension and other parts are unpublished, and there is no measured comparison of cost against performance.

That does not mean those parts are useless. It means their value must be established from your own failure pattern and vehicle. Compare a build across five factors:
- Failure type: wheelspin, bottoming out, loss of control, damage or inability to recover.
- Vehicle: Protector, Burro and Trail Burner may not behave identically, and an upgrade is mounted per vehicle.
- Terrain and weather: a dry trail and a wet climb test different demands.
- Damage state: damage can reduce performance independently of your parts.
- Anchor availability: a recovery failure may be caused by line reach rather than vehicle power.
Change one variable at a time. If you install tires, repair the vehicle, change the route and begin driving in rain simultaneously, you cannot tell which change mattered. A repeatable obstacle and a single changed part produce more useful information than a speculative ranking.
Time your spending around vehicle unlocks
The demo’s progression is challenge-based. It presented three trail challenges, with two challenges unlocking a vehicle beyond the starter. The three named demo vehicles were Protector, Burro and Trail Burner. Since upgrades stay on the vehicle to which they are fitted, heavy investment in an early car can be inefficient if a near-term challenge will replace it with a better-suited vehicle.
That does not mean you should leave the starter completely stock. Install a tire upgrade when traction is the immediate blocker, or repair and equip recovery tools when they are necessary to finish a challenge. Avoid buying several unverified parts merely because they might help. A targeted improvement that gets you through the next unlock is easier to justify than a full build based on unknown effects.
A sensible progression checkpoint
- Use the starter vehicle to learn throttle control, route reading and winch positioning.
- Complete the earliest trail challenges that are within the vehicle’s current capability.
- Before a difficult attempt, repair damage and identify whether the failure is traction or anchor access.
- Buy tires for a confirmed grip problem; use portable recovery equipment for an anchor problem.
- After unlocking another vehicle, test it on the same representative obstacle before moving expensive parts from your old assumptions to the new car.
Pebbles, meteorites and the cost of experimenting
The developer said that points of interest provide enough Pebbles for upgrades on most vehicles. Completing all demo unlocks requires extracting some meteorites, and meteorites were described as infinite. No spawn timer or earnings rate has been published, so there is no reliable farming schedule or Pebbles-per-minute figure to plan around.

Use that information to support measured experimentation rather than panic spending. Collect points of interest as you explore, keep enough currency for a targeted upgrade or repair, and do not assume that an advertised-looking route to infinite meteorites has a known reset interval. The resource may be renewable without being predictable on a specific timetable.
Unmounting an upgrade does not establish a refund
Pete_MG stated: “you can currently unmount upgrades but not sell them or move them to other cars.” Unmounting is therefore a reversible fitting action, not a confirmed way to recover Pebbles. The available statements do not establish a refund amount, partial refund, or free transfer to another vehicle.
Before fitting an uncertain part, assume that the currency remains committed to that vehicle. If you later unmount it, you may be able to remove the hardware, but you should not budget as though the original Pebbles will return. This distinction matters most just before a challenge unlocks another vehicle.

A demo report from PC Gamer described cabins as save points, alongside points of interest, portable winching equipment and a day-night cycle. Treat cabins as staging points for controlled tests and difficult trail attempts. Save before trying an unfamiliar route, then test one upgrade on a known obstacle rather than combining an upgrade test with a long expedition into unknown terrain.

Learn the recovery tools and locate safe checkpoints before committing to difficult trails. A vehicle that can technically reach a slope is not necessarily ready for an attempt if a failed winch leaves you far from a cabin with limited repair supplies.

Recommended upgrade paths by situation
“My wheels spin on climbs.”
Repair first if the vehicle is damaged, then test a tire upgrade on the same climb. Approach with a controlled throttle and compare the number and severity of wheelspin events. If the trail is wet or the tires are in poor condition, include those facts in your judgment. Tires are the strongest first recommendation because their grip benefit is explicitly confirmed.
“I am stuck beside a tree.”
Stop adding throttle and inspect the line. Try a reachable anchor, improve the angle, and reposition if necessary. A winch is useful here as a recovery technique, but the documented information does not support expecting a stronger pull from a winch upgrade.
“There is nothing to attach to.”
Use portable winching equipment or a jack when available. This is an equipment-and-geometry problem. Buying a different performance part will not create an anchor.

There is no published cost-benefit ranking to follow. Pick one obstacle, change one part, keep weather and damage state consistent, and record the result for that vehicle. Treat your conclusion as vehicle- and route-specific rather than a universal rule.

Bottom line for the demo-era upgrade system
Buy or test tires first when grip is the failure you can see. Use a winch when an anchor is reachable, and carry portable recovery equipment when the problem is that no anchor exists. Repair impact damage before judging any part, and delay speculative engine or suspension spending until you can test one variable on one vehicle and obstacle. Pebbles from points of interest generally support upgrades on most vehicles, but upgrades stay fitted to their original car, so spend with the next vehicle unlock in mind.
