A reliable Ubuntu Cassandra cluster needs more than installing the package on several machines. Use at least three nodes with stable private addresses, the same Cassandra version, deliberate seed and topology settings, restricted internode ports, and an operating plan for repair and backup. This guide follows the Apache Cassandra 5.0 documentation set and shows how to build, validate, secure, and operate that cluster.

What a multi-node Cassandra cluster is
Each Cassandra node stores part of the data and participates in gossip, request routing, and replication. There is no single primary server. A client can contact an appropriate node, while replicas on other nodes provide availability when a machine or failure domain is unavailable.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That distributed design also means configuration must agree across the cluster. Every node needs the same cluster name and compatible topology information, while each node needs its own reachable internode address. Installing three independent Cassandra services without those settings creates separate, unusable clusters rather than one database.
Plan the cluster before installing anything
Minimum node and network plan
- Use at least three Ubuntu nodes for a meaningful production-style failure model.
- Give every node a stable, mutually resolvable private address. Test name resolution and connectivity in both directions before installing Cassandra.
- Keep Cassandra major and minor versions identical on all nodes. Do not mix versions casually during an initial build.
- Synchronize system time. Clock drift complicates logs, certificates, and operational diagnosis.
- Provide disk capacity for data, compaction headroom, snapshots, and streamed data when nodes are added or replaced. Cassandra performance is strongly affected by storage latency and available space.
- Choose datacenters and racks before placing production data. Those labels define failure domains used by replica placement.
The Apache installation documentation supports Java 11 or Java 17 for Cassandra 5.0. Install and verify one of those versions before installing Cassandra. The bundled command-line shell, cqlsh, requires Python 3.8 through 3.13 when you use it.

Choose a topology
A single-datacenter cluster is simpler and usually has lower latency. A multi-datacenter cluster can isolate an entire site or availability zone, but it adds inter-datacenter traffic, latency, and operational work. In either design, use GossipingPropertyFileSnitch and give every node an accurate datacenter and rack in cassandra-rackdc.properties.
| Layout | Strength | Cost or risk | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| One datacenter, multiple racks | Simple operations and low request latency | Does not protect against loss of the whole site | Spread nodes across independent racks or zones where possible |
| Multiple datacenters | Failure-domain isolation and local replicas | Higher network cost, latency, and repair complexity | Use datacenter-aware replication and test cross-site failure behavior |
Do not assume a replication factor of three is mandatory. Select the factor and consistency levels from the number of failure domains, durability target, read and write latency, and available capacity.

Choose an installation method
| Method | Lifecycle management | Filesystem and supervision | Upgrade and rollback considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| APT package | Uses Debian package updates and the normal service manager | Configuration is under /etc/cassandra; logs include system.log |
Convenient for repeatable Ubuntu hosts; test package changes before rolling them through the cluster |
| Tarball | You own extraction, users, service definitions, and updates | Paths depend on your chosen installation layout | Can keep multiple versions side by side, but rollback and supervision are your responsibility |
| Docker | Image, volume, and orchestration lifecycle are yours | Container logs and mounted data paths replace a host package layout | Useful for controlled environments; persistent storage, networking, time, and node identity need explicit design |
The package method is the most direct route on Ubuntu. The steps below use the Apache Cassandra Debian repository and its signing key, then the package-managed service. Regardless of method, keep data and configuration persistent and give each node a durable identity.
Install prerequisites on every node
- Install Java 11 or Java 17 using your organization’s approved Ubuntu package source.
- Verify the runtime:
java -version
The output must show the Java version you intend to use. Resolve an incorrect default Java selection before continuing.
- If operators or applications will use cqlsh, install a supported Python version from 3.8 through 3.13 and verify it with your normal Python version command.
- Confirm forward and reverse name resolution between all planned nodes. A private address that changes after installation can make a previously healthy node disappear from gossip.
- Confirm that the operating system has enough free disk space for the initial data set plus compaction and streaming headroom.
Install Cassandra with APT
On each node, add the Apache Cassandra Debian repository and its signing key according to the Apache Cassandra 5.0 installation procedure. Then refresh package metadata and install the service:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cassandra
The package places the main configuration in /etc/cassandra. Before changing settings, locate the service unit and review system.log so you know where startup and join errors will appear. Stop Cassandra before editing cluster configuration; do not change identity or topology values while the service is actively joining.

cluster_name: 'GameData'
All nodes must use the same value. A mismatch prevents them from behaving as members of the intended cluster.
Define seeds
Set a comma-separated seeds list containing stable addresses of selected seed nodes. Every node should use the same seed list. Seeds help a new node discover the cluster; they are not a master election group and do not carry all cluster traffic.
seeds: '10.20.0.11,10.20.0.12'
Use addresses that will remain available during ordinary maintenance. Include more than one seed so discovery does not depend on a single machine, but do not list every node merely because it exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet each node’s listen address
listen_address is the address Cassandra advertises for internode communication. It must be a real, reachable address on that node and must be unique within the cluster.
# node 1
listen_address: 10.20.0.11
Replace the value on each machine with that machine’s private address. The Cassandra configuration reference is explicit: “Setting listen_address to 0.0.0.0 is always wrong.” A wildcard address does not identify a routable endpoint for another node.
Set client-facing addresses
Configure rpc_address and, where your network design requires it, the broadcast address so clients reach the correct interface. The value must match how applications resolve and connect to the node; do not expose an internal-only address to clients in another network. Verify the actual native transport setting in your configuration rather than assuming a default.
Apply the same topology model
Set this in cassandra.yaml:
endpoint_snitch: GossipingPropertyFileSnitch
Then edit /etc/cassandra/cassandra-rackdc.properties on each node. Datacenter and rack values should reflect the real failure domain, and the naming scheme must be consistent across the cluster.

# node 1 example
dc=dc1

Do not change to an incompatible snitch after data has been inserted. The Cassandra reference warns that such a change can cause data loss because replica placement assumptions change underneath existing data.
Open only the required network paths
| Traffic | Port or setting | Who should reach it | Guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internode storage and streaming | TCP 7000 by default, or the configured alternative | Only Cassandra nodes that communicate with one another | Keep it on the private network and verify connectivity in both directions |
| Native transport for CQL clients | TCP 9042 in common installations; verify the configured value | Approved application and administration clients | Do not expose it broadly to the public internet |
| JMX and management | Configured management endpoint | Restricted operator and monitoring hosts | Apply separate network and operating-system controls |
When traffic crosses an untrusted network, configure server-to-server encryption in server_encryption_options. Configure client-to-node encryption when applications require TLS. Encryption does not replace authorization: it protects a connection, while authentication identifies a user and authorization controls what that user can do.
The default AllowAllAuthenticator and AllowAllAuthorizer settings are not a production security design. Choose an authentication and authorization model before writing sensitive data. If you enable password authentication or CassandraAuthorizer, increase system_auth replication as advised by the Cassandra documentation so security metadata remains available when a node is lost.
Start the nodes in a controlled order
- Stop Cassandra on all nodes before editing files. Check the final values for cluster name, seeds, listen address, client address, snitch, datacenter, and rack.
- Start the first seed node using the package service manager. Watch
system.logwhile it initializes rather than assuming a successful service command means the node is ready. - After the first node is stable, start the remaining nodes one at a time. Wait for each node to discover the cluster and finish joining before starting the next.
- Run
nodetool statusfrom the first node, then repeat it from other nodes. Confirm that every intended member appears with the expected datacenter and rack. - Do not send normal application traffic to a node that is still joining or leaving. Wait until it reports the expected healthy state and the logs show no unresolved bootstrap, gossip, or schema errors.
In nodetool status, U means Up and N means Normal, so a healthy member appears as UN. The command’s view is local to the node on which it runs; a node can report another member differently from a peer. Run the command from several nodes when diagnosing disagreement.
Validate membership, schema, and client access
Check membership and topology
Use:
nodetool status
Check state, load, host ID, token information, datacenter, and rack. A node marked joining or leaving is not yet in the steady state required for ordinary traffic.
Check cluster views and schema agreement
nodetool describecluster
Compare the output and schema versions from more than one node. If versions disagree, inspect system.log on the affected machines before creating application keyspaces. Typical causes include a blocked internode port, an incorrect listen address, inconsistent configuration files, or a node that has not completed joining.
Test the native transport path
From an approved client network, connect with cqlsh to the configured client address and native transport port. A successful connection proves only that the client path works; it does not prove that replication, topology, repair, or backup is correctly configured.

Create keyspaces for the failure model
Use a topology-aware replication strategy for application keyspaces. In a multi-datacenter design, NetworkTopologyStrategy lets you assign a replication factor per datacenter. In a single-datacenter design, choose a factor that fits the number of independent racks and the durability target.
Recommended Free Tools
CREATE KEYSPACE game_events
WITH replication = {
'class': 'NetworkTopologyStrategy',
'dc1': 3
};
The value above is an example, not a universal requirement. A replication factor of three needs enough capacity and failure domains to place three replicas meaningfully. After choosing a consistency level, verify that its latency and availability behavior match the application’s tolerance for stale reads or failed writes.
Do not use a topology label that does not match the values in cassandra-rackdc.properties. A spelling mismatch can place replicas in an unintended domain and defeat the reason for selecting a topology-aware strategy.
Back up and repair continuously
Backups
Replication is not a substitute for backup. Use snapshots and, where appropriate, incremental backup controls:
nodetool snapshot
nodetool enablebackup
nodetool statusbackup
Store backup artifacts outside the node and document retention, encryption, access control, and deletion rules. Test restoration on infrastructure that matches production closely enough to reveal capacity, permissions, and version problems. A backup that has never been restored is an unverified assumption.
Repair
Repair is an operator-controlled task. Incremental repair is the default in the current repair guidance, but it does not cover every corruption or operator-error case, so schedule occasional full repairs as well.
For incremental repair, run nodetool repair -pr on each node in each datacenter to avoid duplicate primary-range work. Schedule repairs often enough that unrepaired data does not outlive gc_grace_period. The exact interval depends on workload, topology, and Cassandra version; monitor completion rather than adopting a calendar interval blindly.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Changing replication
Increasing a keyspace’s replication factor does not instantly copy historical data to the new replicas. After raising it, perform a full repair so existing data streams to the additional replicas. After reducing it, run nodetool cleanup to remove data no longer owned by each node. Roll these operations through the cluster to limit load and watch disk space, streaming, and client latency.
Add nodes and change topology safely
Adding capacity is a data movement event, not merely a server provisioning task. Confirm that the new node has the correct Cassandra version, cluster name, seeds, snitch, datacenter, rack, and reachable addresses before starting it. Watch streaming progress and logs, then validate membership and schema agreement from multiple existing nodes.

Plan the target placement, verify network bandwidth and disk capacity, and complete the required repair work before declaring the migration finished. Troubleshoot the failures people see most often
nodetool status does not show UN
- Joining or leaving: wait for bootstrap or decommission activity to finish and read
system.log. - Down from one node only: run
nodetool statuson additional nodes. The view is local, so compare perspectives before declaring a cluster-wide outage. - Missing entirely: verify the node’s service state, seed reachability, DNS or private-address resolution, and the internode storage port.
- Wrong datacenter or rack: correct
cassandra-rackdc.propertiesand stop before placing application data if the topology is still wrong. - Schema disagreement: use
nodetool describecluster, inspect logs, and resolve connectivity or configuration errors before retrying schema operations.
Nodes form separate clusters
Check that every node has exactly the same cluster_name, the same seed list, and compatible Cassandra versions. Confirm that each listen_address is unique and reachable. A wildcard listen address, stale private address, or blocked storage port can prevent gossip from converging.
Clients cannot connect
Verify the configured rpc_address or broadcast address, the native transport port, and firewall scope. A node may be healthy internally while its client interface is bound to an address that applications cannot route to. If TLS or authentication is enabled, check certificates and credentials separately from basic TCP reachability.
Replication or repair is unexpectedly slow
Check disk latency and free space, compaction activity, network bandwidth, and concurrent streaming or repair jobs. In a multi-datacenter design, measure the inter-datacenter path rather than assuming the private network has local-datacenter performance.
Cloud virtual machines versus bare metal
| Consideration | Cloud VMs | Bare metal |
|---|---|---|
| Disk latency | Depends on the selected storage class and noisy-neighbor controls | Can be predictable when disks and controllers are dedicated |
| Private networking | Usually provides explicit virtual networks and security groups | Requires your own switching, routing, and firewall design |
| Failure replacement | Instances can often be recreated quickly if data and identity are handled correctly | Replacement hardware may take longer but can be standardized |
| Backup integration | Provider storage and snapshot services may integrate with operations | You must design and operate backup targets and transport |
Neither platform removes the need for Cassandra-level snapshots, repair, topology planning, or security controls. Evaluate predictable storage latency, private connectivity, replacement procedures, and tested restoration rather than choosing on compute price alone.
Production readiness checklist
- Every node runs Java 11 or 17, the same Cassandra major and minor version, and a supported Python version if cqlsh is required.
- All nodes resolve one another over stable private addresses and have synchronized time.
cluster_name, seed list, snitch choice, and topology naming are consistent.- Every
listen_addressis unique and routable; none is0.0.0.0. - Storage port 7000, or its configured alternative, is private to Cassandra nodes.
- Native transport is restricted to approved clients, and its actual configured port is documented.
- Server-to-server and client-to-node encryption requirements are addressed.
- Authentication, authorization, and
system_authreplication are planned before sensitive data is written. nodetool statusshows intended members asUNfrom multiple nodes, with expected datacenter and rack values.- Snapshots, incremental backup status, restoration tests, repair ownership, and replication-factor change procedures are documented.
Bottom line
Build the cluster as one coordinated system: prepare stable nodes, install the supported Java runtime, configure seeds and routable addresses, select a topology-aware snitch, restrict internode traffic, and start members sequentially. Treat UN membership, schema agreement, tested backups, and scheduled repair as ongoing operating requirements rather than one-time installation milestones.
