Yes. Under Blizzard’s published Overwatch 2 Competitive policy, a disconnection counts as leaving a match even if it was caused by a crash and was not intentional. Repeated departures bring escalating penalties, and leaving 10 Competitive matches in a season triggers an immediate ban for the rest of that season.
What Blizzard’s Competitive leaver policy says
Blizzard’s Season 10 and Beyond policy says players can be suspended for leaving a Competitive match. It explicitly treats deliberate departures and disconnections alike: “Remember, deliberately leaving or having a disconnection still counts as leaving.” The policy does not make the penalty depend on whether the player intended to disconnect or was at fault.
Escalating penalties and the season limit
Blizzard says Competitive penalties escalate for repeated departures, beginning at 15 minutes and potentially progressing to a ban for the remainder of the Competitive season. Separately, its seasonal cap is specific: leaving 10 Competitive matches in one season results in an immediate season ban. These are distinct parts of the policy—the escalating response to repeat violations and the stated 10-departure seasonal threshold.
An earlier Season 7 leaver-policy post also describes a 15-minute initial suspension for leaving before a game is complete, with penalties increasing for subsequent violations. That older post provides context, not a complete list of every current penalty tier.

What the July 2026 crash report establishes—and what it doesn’t
In a July 8, 2026 post on Blizzard’s Overwatch Technical Support forum, a player said their PC had been crashing during Overwatch and that another crash was followed by a Competitive season ban. The player also reported receiving an eight-hour suspension after an earlier crash. A forum responder said disconnects and deliberate leaves receive the same penalty regardless of reason or fault.
This is an individual account, not an account-log audit. The post does not independently establish the player’s full departure history, the precise timing of each departure, or the exact account-specific trigger for the season ban. It illustrates how a crash can coincide with a serious penalty under the published rule, but it cannot prove why that account’s penalty escalated from eight hours to a season ban. The responder’s forum reply should not be treated as a statement from a verified Blizzard spokesperson.

What to do if Overwatch 2 keeps crashing
Blizzard advises players experiencing technical problems to troubleshoot in casual modes and wait to return to Competitive until they believe the issue is resolved. Its leaver-policy guidance points players toward troubleshooting support; the relevant recommendation is to avoid risking further Competitive departures while the problem persists.
- Use casual modes while investigating the crash rather than continuing Competitive matches.
- Return to Competitive only when you are confident the technical issue has been resolved.
- Do not assume that lack of intent or fault will exempt a disconnection from the leaver policy.
The cited policy and forum discussion do not diagnose the crash. They do not establish whether a given crash comes from the game, a PC component, drivers, or the network, and they do not verify a particular hardware or software purchase as a fix.

Can you appeal a season ban caused by a crash?
The player asked whether there was a way to appeal or speak with someone. A community reply in the forum thread said these penalties cannot be overturned, but the thread does not establish a formal appeal process or provide an account-specific review of the ban. The official policy sources cited here explain how departures are counted; they do not describe a crash-based exception.
