1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by turning on Overwatch’s network statistics, then test Ethernet, stop downloads and uploads, restart your modem and router, and compare the result. If the problem continues, use WinMTR or an alternate network to determine whether the cause is Wi-Fi, household congestion, your ISP’s route, your device, or Blizzard’s service. Do not begin with DNS changes, port forwarding, or a VPN: none is a guaranteed fix for in-match latency.
First, identify what “lag” means
Players use lag to describe several different problems. The correct fix depends on which one you have.

- High latency or ping: Your inputs and the server’s responses take longer to travel. A consistently high ping can feel delayed, while a stable connection may still be more playable than one with severe spikes.
- Jitter or ping spikes: Latency repeatedly rises and falls, causing inconsistent hit registration and movement.
- Packet loss: Data fails to arrive. Players may teleport, actions may appear late or fail, and the game may disconnect.
- Interpolation delay: Overwatch buffers other players’ movement so it can display them smoothly. This is not the same as ping.
- Low FPS or simulation problems: Your PC cannot render or process the game quickly enough. Changing your internet connection will not fix this.
- Server or routing problems: An ISP route, regional incident, or Blizzard-side issue can affect multiple players even when your home network is working correctly.
Blizzard’s network diagnostic guide separates FPS, latency, interpolation delay, simulation, command queue, packet rates, and incoming and outgoing packet loss.

How to display Overwatch network statistics
PC
- Press Ctrl + Shift + R by default to toggle the performance display.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + N by default to toggle the larger network graph.
Blizzard notes that the network-graph shortcut uses the right Shift key. The left Shift key may activate an ability instead. If the shortcut does not work, open the Video settings and search for “network,” “latency,” or “stats”; labels and shortcuts can change after updates.

How to read LAT, IND, and packet loss
- LAT: A smoothed estimate of the time needed for your client to receive a response from the game server. High LAT means high latency, but spikes and instability are often more disruptive than a consistently higher number.
- IND: Interpolation delay, the buffer used to display other players’ movement smoothly. Blizzard says normal games commonly show about 50–60 ms, but this value is adaptive and is not a hard target.
- LOSS IN: Estimated packets lost between the server and your device.
- LOSS OUT: Estimated packets lost between your device and the server.
Consistent packet loss above zero is a warning sign, although a brief, tiny reading may not produce a noticeable problem. Look for repeated or sustained loss while the symptoms occur rather than treating a single flash as conclusive.
Orange and white graph bars
- Large orange bars: Latency has exceeded interpolation delay and generally points to a connection-related problem.
- Large white bars: Your computer is taking longer than expected to process received data, suggesting a CPU, GPU, or local performance issue rather than an internet problem.
Overwatch’s amber network icons can indicate that the client has not heard from the server for longer than the interpolation delay or that packet loss has occurred. Blizzard sets these thresholds low, so an icon can pulse without indicating a severe problem. Frequent or persistent activity matters more than one brief flash.
The 10-minute fix checklist
- Leave the match if possible and reproduce the issue in Practice Range or another low-stakes mode.
- Check whether anyone is downloading, streaming, uploading, syncing files, or making a video call.
- Close Steam, Battle.net, console downloads, cloud-storage clients, browsers playing video, torrents, and large transfers.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the PC or console to the router with Ethernet and test again.
- Power-cycle the modem and router: unplug the modem, wait at least 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait for service to return, then restart the gaming device.
- Restart Overwatch and Battle.net if you are playing on PC.
- Check Blizzard’s current service announcements before assuming the issue is local.
- Test another game or device on the same connection.
- Record LAT, IND, LOSS IN, and LOSS OUT while the problem occurs.
- Do not immediately buy faster internet, change DNS, install a VPN, or forward ports.
These steps reflect Blizzard’s connection guidance, which recommends closing traffic-heavy programs, restarting network equipment, and using a direct wired connection where possible.
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic test
Connect a desktop PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet. Disable Wi-Fi temporarily so you know the test is wired, then play for long enough to reproduce the issue. Compare LAT, LOSS IN, LOSS OUT, and the frequency of network icons.
If the problem disappears, the likely cause is Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, wireless congestion, roaming between access points or bands, or a faulty wireless adapter. That does not prove Blizzard’s servers are healthy; it does show that your wireless link is an important part of the problem.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
If Ethernet is not practical:
- Move closer to the router.
- Try a clean 5 GHz or 6 GHz band when supported. These bands are often faster and less congested, but have shorter range and penetrate walls less effectively than 2.4 GHz.
- Use 2.4 GHz when range is the limiting factor, then test for interference.
- Keep the router out of cabinets and away from televisions, microwaves, and other sources of interference.
- Avoid wireless extenders unless they use a properly wired backhaul; an extra wireless hop can add delay and instability.
- Test at the time of day when the issue normally occurs.
A replacement Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable can be sensible if the existing cable is damaged, loose, unusually long, or producing link errors. Expensive “gaming Ethernet” cables do not inherently reduce ping.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Stop congestion and bufferbloat
Bandwidth and latency are different. A connection can have plenty of advertised download speed yet develop severe ping spikes when another device fills the download or upload queue. This is commonly called bufferbloat.
- Test Overwatch while the household connection is idle.
- Repeat while another device performs a sustained download or upload.
- If latency rises sharply only under load, inspect the router for SQM (Smart Queue Management), AQM, FQ-CoDel, or CAKE.
- Enable one traffic-management feature at a time and test again.
- If using vendor “gaming QoS,” confirm that it can prioritize the correct device and actually controls queues. Ordinary QoS is not automatically equivalent to SQM.
Upload traffic is especially easy to overlook: cloud backups, livestreaming, security-camera uploads, and video calls can cause delays even when download usage looks modest. A faster plan may help if your existing line is regularly saturated, but it cannot fix Wi-Fi interference, physical distance, packet loss, or poor ISP routing.
Restart and update everything involved
- Power-cycle the modem and router.
- Install router firmware updates from the manufacturer.
- Restart the PC or console.
- On PC, update the Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver from the device or motherboard manufacturer.
- Install current console system software.
- Update Overwatch and Battle.net.
- Note whether the problem began immediately after a game, driver, router, or ISP update.
Blizzard’s technical troubleshooting guidance also covers restarting the computer, closing other programs, updating drivers, checking security software, and separating connection faults from performance problems.
Windows network reset commands
These commands can repair a damaged local IP or Winsock configuration, but they are not guaranteed ping reducers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run each command separately.
- Restart Windows after
netsh winsock reset. - Test Overwatch again.
If a school, corporate, VPN, or security setup depends on custom networking, record the existing configuration first. Blizzard’s latency guidance includes renewing or resetting IP configuration and flushing DNS.

What changing DNS can and cannot do
DNS can help with domain-resolution, launcher, or login lookup failures. It generally does not reduce the round-trip time of game packets after Overwatch has selected a match server. Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, and OpenDNS are therefore not universal ping fixes.
Disable VPNs, proxies, and filtering software temporarily
Turn off any VPN and disable Windows or browser proxy settings, then retest using the normal ISP route. A VPN can occasionally bypass poor ISP peering, but it can also add distance, latency, packet loss, and another point of failure. Blizzard recommends disabling VPN services and proxy settings during ordinary troubleshooting because the VPN’s route is outside normal support scope.
Also check that Overwatch, Battle.net, and related Blizzard services are allowed through the firewall. Third-party antivirus and network-filtering tools can inspect or block traffic. Test with protection disabled only briefly, only if you understand the risk, and re-enable it immediately afterward. Prefer a proper application exception over permanently disabling security.

Port forwarding and NAT: when they matter
Port forwarding is usually more relevant to reachability, strict NAT, matchmaking, or repeated connection errors than to the latency of an established match. It is not a standard cure for packet loss or high ping.
Do not forward random ports from an unverified guide. Opening unnecessary ports increases exposure and can create conflicts. If current platform-specific documentation genuinely requires forwarding, reserve the device’s local IP through DHCP so the rule does not point to the wrong device.
UPnP, NAT type, double NAT, and carrier-grade NAT can affect connection establishment, but they do not all cause high in-match latency. Players with strict NAT or repeated inability to join games should consult Blizzard’s current platform documentation and their router manufacturer rather than applying a universal port list.

Use WinMTR to investigate the route
WinMTR can help show whether loss or latency begins in your home network, at the ISP, or farther along the route. It is mainly useful for PC players.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Open the network graph and record the game-server IP shown there.
- If the display includes a port, remove the colon and port number; WinMTR needs the host IP.
- Run WinMTR to that address.
- Continue for several minutes, ideally while the symptoms occur.
- Stop the test and save the text output.
Blizzard’s technical-support procedure describes this server-IP and WinMTR method.
Read WinMTR carefully
- Loss at an intermediate hop that does not continue to the final destination is often ICMP rate limiting, not real game-packet loss.
- Loss that begins at one hop and continues through every later hop is more significant.
- A latency increase at one hop that persists to the destination is stronger evidence of a routing problem.
- A clean result does not prove the game is healthy; the issue may be intermittent, protocol-specific, or server-side.
- Run more than one test if the problem occurs only during evenings or at particular times.
One bad-looking hop does not automatically prove that the ISP is responsible.
Compare another network
Use a temporary phone hotspot or another connection as a diagnostic comparison, not as a guaranteed gaming solution.
- Works on the alternate network: Your home router, Wi-Fi, ISP, or ISP route becomes more likely.
- Fails identically elsewhere: Investigate the game installation, device, account, Blizzard service, or a wider incident.
- Hotspot is worse: That does not prove your home connection is healthy; mobile networks have their own latency and loss characteristics.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Symptom | Likely causes | Best next checks |
|---|---|---|
| High ping but stable | Distance, region, routing, party composition, VPN exit | Confirm the assigned server, disable VPN, test solo versus party, compare another ISP or network |
| Ping spikes during downloads or uploads | Bufferbloat or household congestion | Stop traffic, test under load, enable SQM or effective QoS |
| LOSS IN elevated | Wi-Fi, modem/router, ISP line, route, or Blizzard-side issue | Test Ethernet, run WinMTR, compare idle and busy periods |
| LOSS OUT elevated | Local adapter, cable, router port, upload saturation, VPN, ISP upstream | Swap cable and router port, stop uploads, disable VPN, update the adapter driver |
| Low FPS with normal LAT and loss | GPU/CPU load, drivers, thermals, graphics settings, overlays | Check utilization and temperatures, update graphics drivers, review VSync and graphics settings |
| Every game and device affected | Router, Wi-Fi, congestion, damaged cable, ISP line or outage | Test wired, inspect equipment, compare another network, contact the ISP |
PC, console, and Switch notes
PC
Use the performance display and network graph shortcuts, test Ethernet, update the network adapter driver, review Windows Firewall exceptions, and use the Windows commands above when the local network configuration appears damaged.
PlayStation and Xbox
Run the console’s built-in network test, prefer a wired connection, and check NAT status if you have matchmaking or connection-establishment problems. A strict NAT result does not by itself explain high ping inside an already-established match.

Nintendo Switch
Use a wired adapter or dock connection where supported, run the console network test, and check Wi-Fi interference and NAT when joining games is unreliable. A router reboot and wired comparison are more useful first tests than changing DNS.
When to contact your ISP or Blizzard
Contact the ISP when persistent loss or latency is supported by testing beyond the home network, the problem affects multiple devices or games, the connection worsens under load, or the provider can investigate line errors, congestion, or routing. Ask for a line-quality or routing investigation rather than simply requesting a faster download tier.
Contact Blizzard when the issue is specific to Overwatch, persists across a healthy wired connection and alternate network, affects a particular server or region, or coincides with a service incident. Do not claim that Blizzard is down without a current official announcement or corroborating evidence.
Give support useful evidence:
- Date and exact local time, including time zone.
- Platform and game mode.
- Region or server information shown in Overwatch.
- LAT, IND, LOSS IN, and LOSS OUT during the incident.
- Whether the device used Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Whether downloads, uploads, or other household traffic were active.
- Whether other games and devices were affected.
- WinMTR output collected during the problem.
- Results from an alternate network, if available.
This evidence is more useful than repeatedly changing DNS, opening ports, or installing a VPN without recording the result.
Common advice that often fails
- “Buy faster internet.” It helps when the current connection is saturated, but not with distance, bad routing, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, or faulty hardware.
- “Change DNS to lower ping.” DNS affects lookups, not normally the ongoing route of match traffic.
- “Use a VPN.” A VPN is a routing experiment. It may improve one route and worsen another.
- “Forward every Overwatch port.” This is risky and usually irrelevant to in-match ping.
- “Any packet loss means Blizzard is broken.” Loss can occur between your device and router, within the ISP, along the route, or at the game service.
- “One bad WinMTR hop proves the ISP is at fault.” Intermediate routers may deprioritize diagnostic packets while forwarding game traffic normally.
- “Low ping means everything is fine.” Low average ping can coexist with jitter, packet loss, upload saturation, server simulation delay, or low FPS.
