Loot boxes returned to Overwatch 2 with Season 15 in 2025, so they are no longer an upcoming feature. Blizzard’s published rules explain what standard and Legendary boxes can contain, their rarity guarantees, and the earning methods used in particular seasons and events. Those earning methods change, so check the live game for what is available now.
What loot boxes contain
Blizzard says a standard loot box contains four cosmetic items drawn from Overwatch and Overwatch 2. Items are selected when the box is opened, with preference for items you do not own. If the game cannot avoid duplicates, it grants progress toward a bonus box. Unopened boxes from previous seasons are automatically opened at the start of a new season, and their items are added to your collection. Blizzard’s Season 15 announcement

These guarantees describe consecutive openings; they do not mean each standard box contains an Epic or Legendary item. Blizzard’s Overwatch team described its standard-box protection this way: “we are guaranteeing that a Rare or better item will drop in every single box, with an Epic item within five consecutive boxes and a Legendary item within twenty consecutive boxes.” Blizzard’s February 2025 Spotlight announcement
What are the standard loot box drop rates?
Blizzard published the following per-rarity chances for standard boxes in 2025. They are not mutually exclusive: a box holds multiple items, so the percentages can add up to more than 100%.

These figures are Blizzard’s published rates, not results from an independent test. The guarantee system is separate: each standard box includes Rare or better, with the Epic and Legendary thresholds applying over consecutive openings. Blizzard’s 2025 loot box announcement
How to earn loot boxes
There is no single permanent earning schedule. Blizzard’s examples show boxes offered through play, challenges, logins, and event reward tracks, with quantities and box rarities varying by season or event.

Season 15: the return in 2025
For Season 15, Blizzard said players could earn up to three standard boxes each week by completing up to 27 games; wins counted double toward that total. The free Battle Pass track included one Legendary box, and the Premium track offered two additional Legendary boxes. These were Season 15 terms, not a standing promise for later seasons. June 2026: Excavation Initiative
In the June 2026 Excavation Initiative, winning one game per day on any three days in a week completed a dig and earned a box. Repeated digs unlocked additional boxes and boxes of higher rarities. The number and type of rewards were specific to that event. Blizzard’s June 2026 event update

May 2026: 10th Anniversary event
Blizzard’s May 2026 update said the community box rewards increased in weeks two and three. In week three, players received a 10 Year Anniversary Loot Box containing four guaranteed Legendary skins. The event offered ten guaranteed Legendary skins in total, and the number of games needed to earn all 15 Anniversary Loot Boxes was reduced to 60, with wins counting double. July 2026: other event rewards
Blizzard’s July 2026 update described boxes earned through logins, challenges, wins, and continued activity, and announced rewards for Summer Games and Junkrat’s Loot Hunt. What to check before you start earning
- Look at the current season’s event and challenge screens for active box rewards; older event schedules do not establish what is available now.
- Check whether the reward is a standard or Legendary box, since their published guarantees differ.
- For a progress target that counts wins double, track games and wins according to the particular event’s rules rather than assuming that multiplier applies everywhere.
