It recreated gameplay from the original Overwatch 1.0 release, with 6v6 matches, classic maps and era-specific hero abilities. Blizzard has not established in the sources reviewed whether the event is currently available or will return.
What was Overwatch: Classic?
Blizzard presented Overwatch: Classic as a special event that took players back to the original game’s 1.0 release from May 2016. The aim was to bring back gameplay and abilities associated with that era, including hero kits that had changed or disappeared over the years. It was an event in Overwatch 2, not a separately announced retail release. Blizzard’s Season 13 announcement and its Overwatch: Classic article describe the mode.
What could players expect from the mode?
6v6 matches
The event used Overwatch’s 6v6 format, rather than the five-player team format of the contemporary live game described in the Season 13 announcement. The mode was a time-limited return to a particular ruleset, not an announcement that 6v6 would become the permanent format. Blizzard’s Season 13 announcement
Two different hero-limit periods
Hero selection rules changed during the event. For its first three days, players could choose duplicate heroes on the same team. From November 15 through the end of the event, single-hero limits applied.

Original-era hero abilities
The mode restored or altered abilities from early Overwatch. Blizzard highlighted Bastion’s original kit and Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, as well as Reaper’s soul-orb healing and Torbjörn’s manually placed, upgradeable turret. These examples show why Classic was more than a map rotation: the heroes themselves could play differently from their later versions. Blizzard’s Overwatch: Classic article
