Overwatch 2’s Season 9 launch update, released February 13, 2024, increased most eligible damage-projectile sizes, raised hero health, and added passive health regeneration for every hero. It also introduced a Damage-role passive that temporarily reduced healing received. These were launch values, not a description of the game’s current balance: Blizzard adjusted some of the systems in March 2024.
What changed in Overwatch 2 Season 9?
Blizzard paired more forgiving damage projectiles with larger health pools. The goal was to make shots feel more consistent without letting improved average accuracy sharply shorten fights. The update also gave every hero a way to regenerate health after leaving combat and made Damage heroes reduce the healing received by targets they hit.

Blizzard described one aim as “Deliver a more consistent feel to firing and landing your shots on your opponents.” Its overview also said the projectile-size and health changes would reduce burst damage and the relative strength of healing. Read Blizzard’s Season 9 developer overview.
Did bullets get bigger?
“Bullets got bigger” is shorthand. Blizzard’s February 13 patch notes changed the sizes of most eligible damage projectiles, including hitscan attacks and projectiles that travel through the air. It did not apply the same increase to every attack: the modifier depended on the attack category, and projectiles with a base size greater than 0.5 meters were excluded.

The launch patch used these size increases:
| Attack category | Season 9 launch increase |
|---|---|
| High-rate-of-fire or spread hitscan attacks | +0.05 m |
| More precise hitscan attacks | +0.08 m |
| Fast-firing or travel-time shotgun-like attacks | +0.05 m |
| Travel-time projectiles faster than 50 m/s | +0.10 m |
| Travel-time projectiles at or below 50 m/s | +0.15 m |
These are launch-patch modifiers, not a statement of current projectile sizes. Blizzard later reduced the modifier for travel-time projectiles faster than 50 m/s from +0.10 m to +0.075 m in its March 2024 tuning. See the February 2024 launch patch notes and the March 2024 patch notes.
Why did Blizzard increase hero health?
Larger projectiles were intended to make hits more consistent, which could raise average accuracy. Blizzard increased health alongside projectile sizes to soften the effect on time to eliminate: at launch, the combined health increases ranged from 15% to 25%, with exact gains depending on the hero. Blizzard said the changes would usually mean needing at least one additional hit to eliminate a target, while keeping time to eliminate relatively similar overall.

The launch health gains followed broad starting-health bands, but individual amounts varied:
- Heroes starting with 150–175 HP gained 25 HP.
- Heroes starting with 200–300 HP gained 50 HP.
- Tanks starting above 300 HP gained 75–100 HP.
Those bands summarize the patch; they do not provide every hero’s exact value. For the complete hero-by-hero launch changes, consult Blizzard’s February 2024 patch notes.

How did passive health regeneration work?
At Season 9 launch, all heroes began regenerating 20 HP per second after five seconds without taking damage. The Support role passive shortened that delay to 2.5 seconds. This was out-of-combat regeneration; it was separate from healing supplied by teammates and from the Damage passive’s healing reduction.
Blizzard presented the change as a way to reduce the friction of recovering after combat and give Supports more choice about whom to heal. The launch rules are in the developer overview and February patch notes.

How did the Damage healing-reduction passive work?
At launch, dealing damage applied a 20% reduction to the target’s healing received for two seconds. It was an in-combat effect triggered by damage, not the out-of-combat regeneration rule. Blizzard lowered the Damage passive’s healing reduction to 15% in March 2024, so 20% describes the February launch value only—not the later tuned value or necessarily the live value today. See the launch notes and March tuning notes.
What else arrived with Season 9?
The health, healing, and projectile changes were part of a broader season launch. Season 9: Champions also brought a Competitive soft reset and placement matches, introduced Champion rank above Grandmaster, and added Jade Weapon Variants for the 2024 Competitive Year. The season overview also covered a Pharah rework and Junkertown map changes. Those are separate season features rather than parts of the health and healing rules. Blizzard’s Season 9 overview has the announcement details.
Blizzard’s February and March 2024 notes establish the launch values and the cited follow-up adjustments. They do not establish October 2026 live balance values; check the latest official patch notes for the current state.
