As of October 8, 2026, both announced July test windows had ended. Blizzard has not said in the sources reviewed here whether those specific modes were kept or rerun. The headline’s “big balance changes” refers to adjustments for the December 2024 experiment only, not standard live modes.
Are Overwatch 2’s 6v6 experiments still live?
No announced test window was still open as of October 8, 2026. Blizzard scheduled two Quick Play Hacked 6v6 tests: Flex Queue from July 16–19, 2026, and Dynamic Queue from July 30–August 2, 2026. Those dates have passed. The announcement does not establish whether Blizzard later retained or reran either format, so check the current in-game mode list and official patch announcements for present availability. Blizzard’s official news and patch announcements are the place to verify current status.
Blizzard framed the tests as experiments, not a promise to replace the core format. Game director Aaron Keller wrote, “The result or success of these experiments doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to be changing the main format of the game.” Findings could instead inform adjustments to existing modes or new Arcade modes. Blizzard’s Director’s Take: Future Formats
What were the July 2026 6v6 formats?
“6v6” did not describe one fixed ruleset in these trials. The two tests used different ways to build teams around Tank availability. Blizzard’s stated aims included making Role Queue matches more dynamic, improving the Tank experience, and reducing team-fight volatility and other pain points.

Flex Queue: a flexible 1-3-2 structure
Each team had at least one Tank, three Flex Damage players, and two Supports. At a time, one Damage player could select a Tank hero. That gave a team two possible compositions: two Tanks and two Damage heroes, or one Tank and three Damage heroes.
Blizzard designed the format to avoid waiting for two Tank players while preserving more composition structure than Open Queue. The trade-off was potential social pressure on Damage players to switch to Tank.

Dynamic Queue: aim for 2-2-2, then flex if needed
Dynamic Queue aimed to assemble two Tanks, two Damage heroes, and two Supports. When Tank availability made that difficult, it could use the Flex Queue structure instead. Blizzard presented that fallback as a release valve for Tank demand; the cost was less predictability between matches, which could make the experience feel less consistently competitive.
Both formats were described in Blizzard’s Director’s Take: Future Formats.

What did “big balance changes” mean?
It refers to the December 17, 2024 6v6 Experiment patch. Blizzard’s official listing says its adjustments were based on the December 10 patch and applied only to that experiment. They should not be read as changes to standard live modes. The official listing identifies the mode-specific scope; without a verified hero-by-hero change list, it is more accurate not to imply particular heroes or abilities were changed. Check Blizzard’s official patch notes archive for patch details and any later updates.
How is 6v6 different from 5v5?
Blizzard has described this as a choice between player-experience trade-offs, rather than a question with one objectively superior team size. Its 2024 explanation contrasts individual agency and faster, more readable fights in 5v5 with the Tank synergy and greater defensive capacity possible in 6v6. | Factor | 5v5 | 6v6 |
|---|---|---|
| Tank demand and queues | One fewer Tank is needed for each match, which can help shorten waits. Queue time still depends chiefly on how many players queue for each role, with Tank demand a bottleneck. | Two Tanks are needed in a standard 2-2-2 lineup, increasing Tank demand; the July experiments tested flexible alternatives to ease that constraint. |
| Role agency and fight space | Blizzard said the move to 5v5 increased individual agency, reduced mitigation and crowd control, and gave players more room to shoot, flank, and duel. | More team health and defensive capacity can make fights more coordinated and potentially harder to follow. |
| Tank play | One Tank has less opportunity for Tank-to-Tank synergy. | Two Tanks can create more synergy, alongside more mitigation and coordination demands. |
How popular were 6v6 modes?
Blizzard’s Director’s Take reported the following approximate shares of daily players for selected modes as of June 28, 2026:
| Mode | Share of daily players |
|---|---|
| Unranked Role Queue 5v5 | ~54% |
| Ranked Role Queue 5v5 | ~37% |
| Unranked Open Queue 6v6 | ~19% |
| Ranked Open Queue 6v6 | ~8% |
| Unranked Mystery Heroes 6v6 | ~4% |
These are Blizzard’s figures for the listed modes, not mutually exclusive portions of the player base: a player could be counted in every mode played during a session, and the list was not exhaustive. The percentages therefore do not add up to 100%. Blizzard said 5v5 retained the majority while 6v6 was growing in popularity. Blizzard’s Director’s Take: Future Formats

- The December 2024 balance adjustments were for that 6v6 Experiment mode, not standard live play.
- Blizzard has treated 5v5 and 6v6 as formats with different costs and benefits, and said a successful experiment would not automatically change the core game.
