Overwatch 2’s Hero Progression Revamp Feels Like Engagement Bait

Overwatch 2’s hero progression can feel like a grind without meaningful payoff, but the available evidence does not prove Progression 2.0 was designed to maximize engagement.

Overwatch 2’s progression system can feel like engagement bait when the time spent playing is more visible than the rewards earned for it. But the available evidence supports that as a player-facing criticism—not as proof Blizzard designed Progression 2.0 to keep players grinding. The key questions are whether progress tracks meaningful play, whether rewards arrive at a worthwhile pace, and whether those rewards feel valuable.

What hero progression was originally meant to track

Blizzard introduced Player Progression with Overwatch 2: Invasion as a way to track play across heroes, roles, and game modes. The launch description says hero badges reflected role-related statistics, time played, games won, and statistics tied to unique abilities. Role badges tracked role statistics, wins, and playtime; mode badges tracked wins and playtime. Badge levels fed into broader progression levels. Blizzard’s launch description framed the system as a way to show a player’s style and favorite parts of the game.

The listed rewards included Player Icons, Name Cards, Titles, and Overwatch Credits. Progression also counted toward weekly reward challenge tiers for Overwatch Coins. These are digital in-game rewards, and the original description does not establish how quickly a player earned any particular reward.

Why the system can read as engagement bait

The criticism is understandable when a game prominently tracks time and activity but players do not feel they are receiving something commensurate in return. A progression bar can make continued play feel like the goal in itself, especially if its rewards are mostly cosmetic or if the player does not value the next item. That describes a possible experience of the system; it does not establish Blizzard’s intent.

Blizzard’s stated rationale points in the other direction. In a 2023 commentary, game director Aaron Keller wrote: “Players want to feel rewarded for their time playing the game – they’d like to be able to earn items that they want without an unreasonable grind to get them.” He also described player interest in recognition of time and skill investment and in celebrating performance during matches. That commentary explains goals behind broader progression work at the time, but it is not proof of the motive behind the later Progression 2.0 changes. Keller’s commentary provides the stated standard against which players can judge the system: rewards should feel worth earning, not merely keep a counter moving.

What is known about Progression 2.0—and what is not

A Blizzard forum notice dated August 26, 2025, the launch day of Season 18, explicitly refers to “Progression 2.0.” It reports that some players might see unexpectedly high Player Levels and incorrect Player Level Badges because levels from the previous system were still being calculated and some were counted twice. Blizzard described this as a visual or content issue to be addressed in a later update. The notice said Hero Level and other Badges were not tied to rewards in Progression 2.0, so the display error should not result in missing or extra loot. The notice documents a transition bug, not a full explanation of the new system.

The available official materials do not establish Progression 2.0’s complete level formula, exact time required per milestone, current reward thresholds, or whether later patches changed those mechanics. That means a precise old-versus-new grind comparison cannot be made from these sources. The 2025 bug notice also should not be treated as a guarantee about the system’s current behavior.

What player criticism tells us—and what it cannot

Individual discussions show that some players have questioned progression speed and visibility. One Reddit post asks, “Why is Hero progression soooo slow?”; a Blizzard forum thread is titled “Hero Progression system is flawed” and its search-result excerpts include criticism of visibility and portrait borders. These examples establish that such complaints exist, not that they represent the player base as a whole. (Reddit discussion; Overwatch forum discussion.)

The cited official materials and discussions provide no representative satisfaction survey, measured grind duration, engagement lift, or player sentiment percentage. Without those, it would be misleading to claim that most players feel the same way or that the revamp measurably increases playtime.

How to judge whether progression feels fair

The useful test is not simply whether the game awards levels. It is whether the loop connects a player’s time and skill to progress and rewards they actually value. For Progression 2.0, a grounded evaluation would ask:

Rank #4
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - PC
  • New Pointstreak system that rewards players both for landing kills and completing objectives
  • Weapons proficiency system that allows you to customize your favorite weapons, making them more effiecent in any map or mode
  • Online/offline 2-player co-op Special Ops Survival mode that earns you experience through 16 frantic objective-based missions
  • New play modes, including: Kill Confirmed mode, Team Defender mode and user generated match modes
  • Integration with 'Call of Duty: Elite,' an online multiplayer oriented service launched simultaneously with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • What earns progress? Does the system recognize varied hero, role, and mode play, or does it make a narrow set of actions feel compulsory?
  • How long do milestones take? A level number alone says little without a known time-to-reward measure.
  • How are rewards spaced and valued? Frequent milestones can still feel hollow if the rewards are unwanted; rarer rewards can feel worthwhile if the effort is clear and proportionate.
  • Where is progress visible? Recognition that is hard to notice during play may not deliver the sense of accomplishment the system promises.
  • Can players trust the display? The Season 18 level-counting issue did not, according to Blizzard, affect rewards, but incorrect badges can still make a progression system feel less legible.

These are evaluation criteria, not claims that Progression 2.0 fails each one. The public materials cited here do not provide enough detail to score its current mechanics against them.

Verdict: a fair criticism, not a proven motive

Calling the revamp engagement bait is a defensible description of how progression can feel when players see a grind but do not see enough meaningful reward or recognition. It is not a substantiated claim about Blizzard’s intent. The documented picture is narrower: Blizzard stated that progression should recognize play and provide rewards, players have raised anecdotal concerns about slowness and visibility, and the available Progression 2.0 notice documented a visual transition bug rather than the full system. Whether the criticism holds for the current version depends on mechanics and reward value that these sources do not specify.
