Overwatch has dropped the “2” from its name and begun a story-focused new era, The Reign of Talon. Blizzard announced 10 new Heroes across the year-long plan, alongside interface and system changes. The ten is an announced target, not a confirmed count of Heroes released. As of October 8, 2026, the story was reaching its announced conclusion in Season 5, which began October 6.
Why Overwatch 2 dropped the “2”
The name change marks a branding shift for the ongoing game, not a separate numbered sequel. Blizzard presented it as part of a broader overhaul built around a connected story, new Heroes, and changes to the game’s interface and systems. Xbox Wire describes Overwatch as an always-on, free-to-play team-based hero shooter, rather than a game that requires a physical edition to access: Xbox Wire’s explanation of the new narrative.

What The Reign of Talon story covers
Blizzard announced a year-long narrative running from a new Season 1 through Season 6, followed by another Season 1 in 2027. The premise centers on Vendetta taking control of Talon from Doomfist and beginning an overt conflict with Overwatch. Narrative Lead Miranda Moyer described the ambition to Xbox Wire: “For the first time in Overwatch’s history, we’re telling a complete story.”
The planned delivery was spread across formats rather than confined to seasonal missions: a cinematic, motion comics, in-game events, new voice lines, animated Hero trailers, short stories, and a dedicated narrative viewer. These elements were announced as ways to follow the arc; they are distinct from the game’s roster and interface updates.

Ten Heroes were planned, with five named for Season 1
Blizzard’s announcement promised 10 new Heroes for the year, with five arriving at the start of the new Season 1. The named Season 1 lineup was:
| Hero | Role | Story context in Blizzard’s announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Domina | Tank | In or adjacent to Talon’s orbit |
| Emre | Damage | In or adjacent to Talon’s orbit |
| Mizuki | Support | In or adjacent to Talon’s orbit |
| Anran | Damage | On Overwatch’s side |
| Jetpack Cat | Support | Joined the Support roster |
The figure of 10 is Blizzard’s announced plan, not independent confirmation that all ten had shipped by October 8, 2026. Blizzard’s September update introduced Doctrine as the next Support Hero in Season 5, but the sources available for this article do not establish the final delivered total. The overhaul also changes the interface and systems
Blizzard’s roadmap covered more than Heroes and story content. The announced user-interface refresh included the lobby, play cards, navigation, Hero Gallery, and social panel, plus a Notification Hub and a 3D lobby featuring the selected Hero. The plan called for the lobby to expand in Season 4 to show all group members.
Other announced features and updates included:
- Sub-roles for Tank, Damage, and Support.
- A Praise feature that uses Hero voice lines.
- Additional lobby sound and music controls.
- Later post-match accolades featuring 3D Hero models.
- Further updates to map voting, Hero bans, and Drives.
- Changes to Stadium.
These are features in Blizzard’s announcement and roadmap; the announcement alone does not establish how each change affected play or whether every item arrived on its originally planned schedule.

Season 5 is the announced story finale
By October 8, Blizzard said The Reign of Talon would conclude in Season 5, which launched October 6. Its September 2026 BlizzCon update introduced Doctrine, the Escort map Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, and Sombra and Roadhog reworks, and said Overwatch Spotlight would return in February 2027. Windows Central also reported on Season 5’s October 6 start and its launch content, including Battle Pass changes. See Blizzard’s BlizzCon update and Windows Central’s Season 5 report.
The announced arc’s planned span through Season 6 and Blizzard’s later statement that it would conclude in Season 5 are different points in the roadmap. For current context, the later Season 5 announcement is the relevant status update; it does not confirm that every planned Hero or interface item was delivered.

Platform note: Nintendo Switch 2
Blizzard announced Overwatch for Nintendo Switch 2 in Season 2. That is a platform option for people who want to play on that console, not a hardware requirement for Overwatch generally. The announcement does not establish that a physical game edition exists.
