Overwatch Season 2 refined the existing map-voting system with a fourth, hidden-from-the-map-cards option—Random Map—plus new rules for landslide wins and future map offers. It also brought back Post-Match Accolades, where players can recognize an MVP, endorse others, and choose whether to join match voice chat. Blizzard’s later June 2026 update added preferred-hero visibility and further context on map rotation.
What changed in Overwatch map voting?
Season 2: Summit, whose patch notes are dated April 14, 2026, changed how the established voting system handles options, decisive votes, and future map offers. Voting itself was not new: Blizzard introduced map voting in Season 17.
Three visible maps, plus Random Map
Players see three map choices, with at least two different game modes represented. Random Map is a fourth possible choice, but it does not appear as one of the three visible map cards. It can still win by landslide. (Blizzard’s Season 2 patch notes)
When a vote becomes a landslide
A map wins by landslide when it has at least six more votes than any other map. Blizzard says eight votes guarantee a landslide in 5v5, while nine guarantee one in 6v6. These are the thresholds in the patch notes; they describe game rules, not measured effects on match quality.

Mode and side indicators
Hybrid and Escort cards display attack/defend icons. In Quick Play, the icon shows which side players will play if that map wins; in Competitive, it shows which side they will play first.
How votes affect later map offers
If you vote for a map and it loses, you will be offered that map sooner in future votes. A losing map that receives no votes will instead be offered less soon to players in that match. During the vote, players cannot see which teammate selected which map.

Tags on new and reworked maps
Blizzard’s notes say tagged new or reworked maps grant bonus Battle Pass XP in Quick Play and 10 additional Competitive Points in Competitive. On those tagged maps, the Competitive loss penalty is also reduced. These are stated rules; Blizzard’s notes do not report independently measured player outcomes.
Map voting existed before Season 2
Season 2 adjusted a feature that had already been in the game since Season 17. In its 2025 announcement, Blizzard described three randomized map options after role queue locks in Quick Play and Competitive. Each vote added a 1-in-10 chance for that map in the roulette-style selection. (Blizzard’s Season 17 announcement)

How do Post-Match Accolades work?
After Play of the Game, Post-Match Accolades present two high-performing heroes from each team on a 3D stage. Players vote for an MVP, and the hero Blizzard assesses as the top performer on each team receives one bonus vote. That gives the assessed hero a slight advantage, but does not guarantee the MVP result. MVPs get hero voice lines, and newly added heroes have recognition statistics tailored to them. (Blizzard’s Season 2 patch notes; Season 2 announcement)
Select a hero portrait beside the stage to endorse a player or access other social options. Heroic Endorsements for specific positive traits also return. Blizzard describes the accolades as a short opportunity to recognize a standout teammate or opponent before the animated MVP spotlight.

Is post-match voice chat optional?
Yes. In Unranked and Competitive, Match Voice Chat becomes available as Post-Match Accolades begin, but joining is manual: press the on-screen button to opt in. You can skip it. Blizzard says the channel is monitored for disruptive communication like its other voice channels; its notes encourage banter but say abusive communication is unacceptable.

The same June notes say maps should be much less likely to repeat a map played within the last five matches. This is a later map-pool adjustment, distinct from Season 2’s rules that move a losing voted map sooner for its voter or an unvoted losing map later for players in that match.
What these changes establish—and what they do not
The official announcements and patch notes specify how voting, recognition, endorsements, and optional voice chat are intended to work. They do not provide a measured study showing whether these changes improved player satisfaction, match quality, or map-selection outcomes, so those effects cannot be concluded from the published descriptions.
