Blizzard revealed a redesigned in-game look for Anran on April 6, 2026, after players criticized her launch appearance. The studio said the new model was scheduled to arrive with Overwatch Season 2 on April 14, with changes to her facial features and posture intended to make her read as more mature, sincere, and confident—and more like Wuyang’s fierce older sister.
Why Anran’s launch design drew criticism
Anran joined Overwatch with Season 1: Conquest on February 10, 2026. Players criticized the in-game model for appearing younger than her earlier comic and promotional portrayals and for resembling other female heroes. Some critics described the perceived resemblance as “same face syndrome”; that phrase reflects fan criticism, not a measured consensus or an objective design finding. Game Developer and Windows Central reported on the response at the time.
The complaints also concerned the gap between the launch model and the character suggested by earlier promotional material: a fiery, fierce older sister. Anran voice actor Fareeha Andersen said she had shared her concerns with the team and urged people to give feedback boldly and kindly. Game Developer reported her view that the comic and cinematic had made an “unspoken promise” about challenging narrow beauty standards. Game Developer covered her comments and the initial reaction.
How Blizzard responded
On February 10, game director Aaron Keller said the team was discussing how to make Anran look and feel more like the fierce older sister they envisioned. Keller also noted that hero models are complex and require testing. His response acknowledged the feedback and opened the door to revisiting the design; it did not announce a release date for changes. Game Developer and Windows Central reported the initial response.

Blizzard revealed the updated look on April 6. In the announcement, the Overwatch team said the launch presentation “didn’t fully land as the fiery and fierce sister of Wuyang that we hoped she would,” and that the update aimed to strengthen her overall presence. The official Overwatch post and Keller video introduced the redesign.
What changed in the redesign
Keller said Blizzard focused on Anran’s eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, moving away from what he called a “baby face” and expression toward a more sincere, mature appearance. He also said the team adjusted her posture to make her seem more confident and to better convey the character they intended. Blizzard’s stated aim was also to bring her appearance closer to her brother Wuyang’s. These are the studio’s goals for the redesign, rather than proof that every player agrees it achieves them. The update therefore addressed both facial expression and body language, not just one isolated feature. It was presented as a response to criticism that the launch model looked too young and did not match the character impression created by earlier promotional material.
When the updated look was scheduled to arrive
Blizzard announced that Anran’s updated look would arrive with Overwatch Season 2 on April 14, 2026. That was the scheduled rollout date stated in the April 6 announcement and contemporary coverage; those reports establish the planned date, not the appearance of the game’s current live build. How Anran’s voice actor reacted
After the reveal, Andersen thanked the team and praised the new look, calling it striking and noting that it was achieved within technical limitations. Her response showed support for the redesign, but it does not establish how players broadly received it.
