Overwatch drops the “2” and begins The Reign of Talon
Blizzard said the game would move from Overwatch 2 to Overwatch. The announcement framed the change around a continuing fictional universe rather than a numbered sequel: “Overwatch is more than just a digit: it’s a living universe that keeps growing, keeps surprising, and keeps bringing players together from around the world.” TechRadar attributed the statement to Blizzard’s press release. The accompanying 2026 narrative plan, The Reign of Talon, was presented as a connected story told over six seasons. The announced storytelling formats included cinematics, motion comics, in-game events, voice lines, animated hero trailers, and short stories. Blizzard’s plan positioned the arc as a story unfolding across the year, rather than a single release.

The central announcement was a shift in how Blizzard presented the game’s future: the Overwatch name, a season-spanning Talon narrative, and a planned cadence of new heroes alongside gameplay and cosmetic updates.
