Short answer: neither OVHcloud VPS nor Amazon Lightsail is a ready-made 24/7 YouTube broadcast service. They are virtual servers you can configure to run streaming software, and the better fit depends on that software, your stream’s sustained bitrate, transfer limits, region, and your ability to monitor and recover the broadcast. The published entry plans are not equivalent: OVHcloud lists more memory and storage, while Lightsail specifies a 1 TB transfer allowance.
If you mean “Can I run a 24/7 YouTube livestream on a VPS?”, yes, a VPS can be part of that workflow—but these providers’ published plans do not establish that a stream will stay live continuously. If you are deciding “Which is cheaper for a continuous stream, OVHcloud or Lightsail?”, compare the resources and transfer terms you will actually use, not just the starting prices.

These are product listings, not like-for-like benchmarks. The plans differ in memory, storage, transfer treatment, and other included services; neither a vCPU count nor an advertised price predicts whether your specific streaming workload will run well.

What a VPS would do in a 24/7 channel setup
“Run the stream on a VPS” can describe several different jobs: hosting a control process, relaying media, encoding video, or running another application in a channel workflow. These jobs have different CPU, memory, bandwidth, storage, and licensing needs. Decide what software will run and whether it encodes media before choosing a plan. The cited provider pages do not test either service as a continuous YouTube broadcast system, and they do not establish a specific VPS configuration that will keep a stream live.
Also establish whether a local computer remains involved. If the VPS is only controlling or relaying a process that depends on a home machine, that machine and its connection can still be a point of failure.

Estimate transfer before comparing costs
Lightsail bundles include a fixed transfer allowance, while OVHcloud advertises unlimited traffic for the cited plans. For a continuous stream, estimate the data sent at your intended bitrate and operating duration, then check how the relevant provider and region count that traffic. A stream’s transfer requirement depends on its sustained output bitrate; without that bitrate and the applicable accounting terms, a reliable total-cost comparison cannot be made.
A plan’s starting price is therefore not a complete answer to “Which is cheaper?” Include the required instance size and any relevant attached resources or services in your estimate, and verify current pricing before committing. AWS documents hourly on-demand billing for Lightsail instances.

Compare operations and recovery, not just the feature list
Backups are not stream recovery
OVHcloud lists daily automatic backups, anti-DDoS protection, monitoring on eligible locations, a control panel/API, and one-click scaling. These are useful operational features, but a backup preserves data; it does not by itself restart a failed streaming process or move a broadcast to a working server.
Lightsail bundles include static IPv4, DNS management, monitoring, and highly available SSD storage. AWS also describes snapshots and other attached resources as part of the Lightsail product family. Those capabilities are not the same thing as an automatic broadcast failover; plan and verify the recovery workflow you need.

Availability language has a limited scope
OVHcloud’s US VPS SLA, effective August 7, 2025, states a 99.9% monthly availability commitment for covered VPS classes. It defines unavailability as having no external connectivity, and the measurement clock starts after a support case is created. That is not a promise that YouTube will receive an uninterrupted stream for the month.
The cited AWS overview discusses adding redundancy and uptime through load balancers and attached block storage as a project grows; it does not establish a comparable VPS SLA here. Neither provider’s cited material supplies an independent benchmark for uninterrupted YouTube streaming on these services.

Choose a region deliberately
Both providers offer multiple locations or regions. OVHcloud notes that some features may be unavailable in local zones; AWS advises checking its current Lightsail region list. Location can affect latency, feature availability, and pricing, so verify the target region’s actual plan details rather than assuming every bundle is offered everywhere.

- Define the workload. Name the application and say whether the VPS encodes, relays, controls, or serves something else. Check the software’s own resource and licensing requirements.
- Match the instance to the workload. Compare memory, CPU, and storage in the region you intend to use. Do not treat matching vCPU counts as evidence of matching performance.
- Calculate stream transfer. Use the intended output bitrate and hours of operation to estimate traffic, then check the provider’s applicable plan terms and transfer accounting.
- Design restart and alerting. Decide how the process restarts after a crash, what happens after a server or network failure, and who receives alerts. Test the recovery procedure rather than assuming a backup or monitoring feature performs it.
- Check the YouTube channel’s eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. Users must be at least 16, and live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Which one should you choose?
- Consider OVHcloud VPS if its region-specific configuration fits your software and you value the listed memory and storage, daily backups, and advertised unlimited traffic. Confirm the applicable traffic terms and build your own process recovery.
- Consider Lightsail if its AWS region and bundled services fit your setup, and you can size the instance and manage the fixed transfer allowance for your stream. Its $5 entry bundle has only 0.5 GB memory and 1 TB transfer, so check those limits against the actual workload.
- Do not choose solely by starting price or the availability percentage. The plans are not performance-matched, and provider availability language does not guarantee an end-to-end YouTube broadcast.
