P.T. Couldn’t Save Silent Hills—But It Helped Validate Resident Evil 7

P.T.’s success helped reaffirm Capcom’s direction for Resident Evil 7, but development began before the teaser appeared—and Silent Hills was canceled by Konami.

P.T. did not cause Resident Evil 7 or give Capcom a canceled Konami project to finish. Capcom had begun development of Resident Evil 7 before P.T. appeared. But producer Masachika Kawata said the enthusiastic response to P.T. helped reaffirm Capcom’s direction, while Konami canceled the unfinished Silent Hills project in 2015. The connection is real, but narrower—and more revealing—than the headline’s counterfactual suggests.

What P.T. was—and what Konami canceled

P.T. was a playable teaser for Silent Hills, not a released installment or a finished slice of the planned game. Its looping hallway and unsettling discoveries gave players a concentrated horror experience, while serving as a public introduction to a project associated with Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus.

On April 27, 2015, Konami confirmed that the “embryonic Silent Hills project” developed with del Toro and featuring Reedus’s likeness “will not be continued.” The company also said it remained committed to new Silent Hill titles. GameSpot reported Konami’s statement.

That cancellation ended this particular collaboration; it did not establish that the series itself was over. Nor can anyone say with confidence what Silent Hills would have become: the full game never shipped, so its final story, systems, and quality remain unknown.

Did P.T. inspire Resident Evil 7?

It depends what “inspire” means. P.T. did not originate Resident Evil 7’s development or demonstrably cause its first-person viewpoint. Kawata told UploadVR that development began in February 2014, before P.T. came out that year. He added that the positive response to P.T. helped reaffirm that Capcom was heading in the right direction. His UploadVR interview is the clearest account of that distinction.

Asked how much games such as Amnesia and P.T. influenced development, Kawata described a response that was validating rather than origin-defining: Capcom already had a direction, and P.T.’s reception offered evidence that audiences were receptive to this kind of first-person horror.

Kojima offered a separate interpretation when asked about the Resident Evil 7 reveal: “I guess there’s some influence there, even in the format of having a demo teaser.” That is Kojima’s view of the reveal’s demo-teaser format, not Capcom’s explanation of why it chose first-person horror. It can coexist with Kawata’s chronology: a teaser’s presentation may evoke P.T. even though the game’s development and core design were already underway. GameSpot reported Kojima’s comment.

How the games’ horror approaches compare

Aspect P.T. and planned Silent Hills Resident Evil 7
What players could try P.T., a playable teaser for Silent Hills. It was not the completed game. Beginning Hour, a demo Capcom described as a tonal preview focused on horror and exploration, rather than a section of the complete game.
Viewpoint and intended feeling The teaser placed players in an unsettling first-person environment. The finished project’s viewpoint and full design cannot be established from the canceled game. Capcom shifted the series from its prior third-person perspective to first-person. Kawata said the aim was to put players in the character’s position and make horror direct and visceral.
Development status Konami canceled the embryonic project in 2015; no complete game was released. Capcom was developing the game from February 2014; it went on to release the finished title.

Capcom’s own explanation for the viewpoint change centers on its goal for Resident Evil 7, not on borrowing a design from Silent Hills. In a developer interview, Kawata said that seeing what the character sees was the most direct way to make players experience horror viscerally. Capcom also presented Beginning Hour as a preview of the game’s horror-and-exploration tone, not as a representative level lifted from the full game. Capcom’s developer interview explains the camera rationale.

What “P.T. saved Resident Evil” gets right—and wrong

The phrase works as a provocative shorthand for a limited but meaningful effect: P.T.’s reception helped reassure Capcom that audiences might welcome its chosen direction. It does not mean Konami handed Silent Hills to Capcom, that Capcom inherited Kojima’s team or game, or that P.T. caused the first-person shift. The documented story is two parallel outcomes: Konami stopped one project, while Capcom continued a different game already in development.

The contrast is still striking. A short teaser showed how much anticipation a tightly controlled first-person horror experience could generate; Capcom’s released game pursued its own first-person, fear-centered approach. The reception of one could validate the climate for the other without making them the same creative project.

Capcom’s January 27, 2017 release reported 7.15 million downloads for the Resident Evil 7 demo, which the company called a series record, and more than 2.5 million worldwide game shipments. Capcom later reported more than 10 million worldwide shipments on October 11, 2021. These are dated historical milestones, not current totals. Capcom’s 2017 release and its 2021 announcement document those figures.

Silent Hill continued, but Silent Hills did not

Konami announced a Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and Steam in October 2022, naming Bloober Team, Akira Yamaoka, and Masahiro Ito. That later franchise project shows why the 2015 cancellation should not be mistaken for the end of Silent Hill. It is not a resurrection or continuation of Kojima’s Silent Hills. Konami’s announcement identifies the remake and its collaborators.
