Kingdom Hearts 4 Has a Catch-Up Problem Its New Collection Can’t Solve

The new Kingdom Hearts collection makes much of the saga easier to access, but it does not establish a KH4 catch-up list—and three entries are viewing material, not playable games.

The Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] makes much of the series easier to access, but it cannot tell newcomers what they need to know before Kingdom Hearts 4—or turn every story entry into a playable game. Square Enix has announced KH4 for late 2027, but has not named a required play order or catch-up list. So the problem is not a confirmed barrier to playing KH4; it is that the collection’s “all-in-one” convenience does not settle how much of the sprawling story a new player should experience.

What the collection includes—and what “all-in-one” leaves out

Square Enix’s Collection [I~III] groups three previously released bundles: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. The official product page describes HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX as “an essential collection of the first six stories in the KINGDOM HEARTS series.” The package brings together a substantial part of the console saga, but its contents are not all presented in the same way.

Included entry How it appears in the collection
Kingdom Hearts FINAL MIX Playable game
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories Playable game
Kingdom Hearts II FINAL MIX Playable game
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX Playable game
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days HD cutscene material
Kingdom Hearts Re:coded HD cutscene material
Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover Movie presentation
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD Playable game
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep Playable game
Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind Playable game and DLC

The distinction matters if you are trying to catch up by playing. The 358/2 Days and Re:coded components are cutscene presentations rather than the original games, and χ Back Cover is presented as a movie. They can convey story material, but the collection does not make those three entries playable in the same sense as its full games. The official contents do not establish that every past release or every piece of story material is represented.

Does Kingdom Hearts 4 require you to play every game?

Square Enix has not said that KH4 requires any particular earlier game, nor has it published a mandatory catch-up list in the announcements available as of October 2026. That means “you must play everything” is not an established requirement. It also means the collection itself cannot answer the practical question newcomers care about: which events and characters KH4 will expect them to recognize.

  • The compilation includes the following games: KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics) KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)
  • KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage– KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover (movie)
  • KINGDOM HEARTS III

Square Enix’s official KH4 description places Sora and familiar characters in Quadratum and says he will travel through worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar. A later announcement names a world inspired by Coco. Those details establish the new setting and some of its direction, but they do not specify how the previous saga’s events feed into KH4 or what a player should know first. Until Square Enix explains that, any strict prerequisite list would be guesswork.

A manageable way to prepare while the guidance is unknown

If you want to start the series before KH4, use the collection as a route through the available console story, not as proof that every entry must be completed. Begin with the playable titles in the order they appear in the series’ release-era collections, and treat the cutscene and movie components as story catch-up material rather than full games. If your goal is simply to understand the broad setup, prioritize the main playable entries and the collection’s story presentations; do not mistake completionism for an officially stated KH4 requirement.

  • Want the shortest reasonable catch-up? Focus on the major playable entries and use the provided story presentations for titles you do not want to play in their original form.
  • Waiting for a definitive list? Square Enix has not yet stated which older events KH4 assumes players know, so a more exact recommendation must await official guidance.

Platforms, release status, and physical-copy requirements

The collection was announced for release on October 8, 2026, and is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows. Square Enix lists physical editions for PS5 and Switch 2, alongside digital purchase options; storefront availability may vary by region. Importantly, Square Enix says an internet connection is required to download additional data to play the physical collection. A disc or cartridge should not be treated as a fully self-contained copy.

If you own an eligible digital Switch cloud edition, Square Enix says owners can receive a discount on the corresponding Switch 2 digital version and transfer cloud-version save data to Switch 2. The physical collection is not eligible for that discount. The Switch cloud editions stopped being sold on June 9, 2026, and their service is scheduled to end June 9, 2027; these details concern the relevant Switch editions and do not describe availability on other platforms.

Why the bundle’s scale does not settle the story question

Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of June 2025. That combined figure indicates the series has reached a large audience, but it is not a count of unique players and does not mean a newcomer can assume familiarity with its history. The new bundle lowers the access hurdle for many console-era entries; it does not provide a KH4-specific explanation of what matters, and several included stories are delivered as viewing material rather than playable games.

That is the collection’s unresolved limit, not evidence that KH4 will be inaccessible. The package can help players catch up, but only Square Enix can clarify the intended knowledge baseline for the next game.
