Paladin Oaths in D&D 5e, Ranked: Which Should You Choose?

Vengeance leads this 2014-rules ranking for broadly useful offense, but campaign fit matters. Compare all nine paladin oaths and check the 2024 rules distinction.

For most 2014-rules campaigns, Oath of Vengeance is the strongest all-round pick if you want reliable offense against a high-priority enemy. Oath of the Ancients is a compelling defensive choice, while Watchers offers valuable protection when extraplanar threats matter. This ranking is an editorial assessment—not an official or statistical power list—and its order can change with campaign levels, enemy types, and the rules your table uses.

Scope matters: this list ranks the legacy 2014 oath options, including Oathbreaker as a Dungeon Master’s Guide option that requires the DM’s approval. The 2024 rules revise at least Devotion, so do not treat its 2024 features as interchangeable with the 2014 version.

How this ranking works

The ranking emphasizes features that are useful across a range of campaigns, especially at the early and mid-levels many groups experience, alongside oath spells, action demands, damage, control, defense, and party support. A subclass that depends on a specific enemy type or campaign theme can be excellent when that specialty appears often, but less dependable in a campaign that rarely uses it.

D&D Beyond’s 2023 guide describes oaths in broad party-role terms—such as offense, defense, tank, and utility. Those labels are helpful shorthand for a subclass’s intended feel, not measured performance or a universal power ranking. There are no cited official statistics establishing oath popularity, win rates, or comparative strength.

Under the 2014 rules, a paladin takes a Sacred Oath at level 3 and gains oath features at levels 3, 7, 15, and 20. Oath spells are always prepared and do not count against the paladin’s ordinary prepared-spell allotment. See the 2014 Basic Rules.

2014 paladin oaths ranked

Rank Oath Best fit Why it lands here
1 Vengeance Focused damage against dangerous targets A direct offensive identity makes it a dependable choice when the party needs a foe brought down quickly.
2 Ancients Defense and protecting life A broad protective theme makes it attractive in campaigns where party survival and safeguarding others are central.
3 Watchers Defending the world from extraplanar threats Its specialized mission can provide strong utility and party protection when the campaign features its intended enemies.
4 Devotion A classic, broadly principled paladin A versatile defensive identity and straightforward role make it a reliable thematic and practical choice.
5 Conquest Offense and imposing control It suits players who want a forceful, domination-oriented paladin, though the campaign and party need to support that approach.
6 Redemption De-escalation and protecting others Its commitment to treating violence as a last resort is distinctive, but the approach depends on a campaign that makes negotiation meaningful.
7 Glory Heroic feats and a defensive-minded identity It fits a high-heroism campaign well, though its broad role description alone does not establish greater mechanical value than the higher-ranked options.
8 Crown Service, civic duty, and holding the line It has a clear place in campaigns about society and just laws, but that focus is less universally useful than flexible offense or defense.
9 Oathbreaker A dark, villainous or morally compromised character Its dark-ambition theme can suit a particular story, but it is a Dungeon Master’s Guide option, not an automatic choice for every table.

The published names and book origins are indexed by the DND 5th Edition Wiki; check the relevant official sourcebook for the exact features and rules. D&D Beyond’s 2023 Paladin 101 guide groups Vengeance and Conquest as offense; Devotion, Glory, and Ancients as defense; Redemption and Crown as tank; Watchers as utility; and Oathbreaker as offense. These labels describe broad play styles, not the ranking above.

Which paladin oath should you choose?

Choose Vengeance for a straightforward offensive priority

Pick Vengeance if you want your character’s purpose to be pursuing and punishing a dangerous foe. It is the strongest general recommendation here for players whose priority is offense, especially when the campaign regularly presents significant targets.

Choose Ancients for a protective outlook

Pick Ancients if protecting life and the beautiful things in the world is central to your character. Its broad defensive identity makes it a sensible choice when you want the oath’s theme to remain relevant beyond one narrow enemy type.

Choose Watchers when the campaign supports its specialty

Pick Watchers for a campaign that frequently involves extraplanar dangers. Its utility-focused role label should not be mistaken for a promise of equal value in every adventure: how often that threat appears is part of the choice.

Choose Devotion for the traditional paladin concept

Devotion is a natural fit for a character committed to justice, virtue, and order. The official class description notes that for some paladins “the actual swearing of the oath is a formality, an official stamp on what has always been true in the paladin’s heart.” That line describes the character concept; it is not a mechanical ranking.

Choose Conquest, Redemption, Glory, or Crown for the campaign’s story

Conquest suits a character driven to dominate; Redemption centers on restraint and the possibility of turning from violence; Glory pursues heroic deeds; and Crown serves society and just laws. These themes can be the best reason to choose an oath, even when a different option ranks higher for broad mechanical usefulness.

Choose Oathbreaker only with the DM’s agreement

Oathbreaker is associated with dark ambition and appears in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Ask the DM whether it fits the campaign and whether it is permitted before building around it.

Check your rules version before comparing features

“D&D 5e” may refer to the 2014 rules or the revised 2024 rules. D&D Beyond labels its 2014 Devotion material “Legacy,” while the official System Reference Document 5.2.1 presents a revised Oath of Devotion with its own spell table and features, including Sacred Weapon and Aura of Devotion.

That revised Devotion text does not establish that every legacy oath has identical 2024 rules or is automatically available under every table’s source policy. Keep feature comparisons edition-specific, and confirm with your DM which books and rules the campaign uses. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is the relevant book for readers seeking the revised official paladin rules; the SRD is a reference document, not a complete catalogue of every separately published oath.

Make the final choice at your table

  • Check the campaign level range: the 2014 oath feature milestones are levels 3, 7, 15, and 20, so a feature unlocked late may never come up in a shorter campaign.
  • Look at the campaign’s enemies and story: a specialty is more valuable when the adventure regularly gives it a chance to matter.
  • Read the actual features and oath spells: role labels do not tell you how their effects fit your character’s actions, resources, or the party’s needs.
  • Confirm the edition and source policy: especially for revised 2024 Devotion and for Oathbreaker.
  • Let character concept count: a mechanically strong oath is not automatically the right one if its tenets do not suit the character you want to play.
