In Palworld, the dependable way to obtain Crude Oil is to unlock the Crude Oil Extractor at technology level 50, craft it with 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards, place it so it overlaps an oil field, and keep it supplied with strong electricity. Oil-rig chests and drops from some hostile Pals can cover a shortfall, but they are not a replacement for a powered oil base. The material is consumed by Plasteel, Flamethrower Fuel, Frag Grenade Mk2, and Missile Ammo recipes.

What Crude Oil does in Palworld
Crude Oil is a late-game crafting resource rather than a merchant commodity. It enters several advanced recipes, so demand rises sharply once you begin producing Plasteel or using heavy weapons. The game does not provide a general shop route for it: the Crude Oil page states that merchants do not sell the material.

If you need only a few units to finish a craft, a chest on an oil rig or an enemy drop may be enough. If you are making ammunition or Plasteel repeatedly, plan an oil-field base and its electrical system before you spend the resources on an extractor.
How to unlock and build the Crude Oil Extractor
Reach technology level 50
The Crude Oil Extractor appears at technology level 50 and costs two technology points to unlock. It is not available to a new character, and finding an oil field early does not bypass the technology requirement. Save two points when you approach tier 50 if oil is part of your progression plan.

Gather the recipe materials
One extractor requires:
- 250 Pal Metal Ingots
- 50 Circuit Boards
Those are the complete material figures provided for the extractor itself. They do not include the cost of the power infrastructure you may need at the same base. Treat generation and storage as a separate budget; an extractor with inadequate electricity can consume your reserve and interrupt other machinery.
Craft it after unlocking
Spend the two technology points at level 50, then use the crafting interface that lists the Crude Oil Extractor. Confirm that you have all 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards before travelling to an oil field. Carrying the ingredients to a site and discovering that the recipe is still locked wastes a trip, while building the extractor before arranging power creates an avoidable brownout.

Recognize the deposit
Oil fields are visible resource deposits in the world. The extractor must physically overlap the field when you place it; being merely near a deposit is not sufficient. If the placement preview is outside the deposit, move the structure until its footprint covers the oil field rather than trying to compensate with extra generators.
A reported Sunlit Isle option
A location guide dated August 14, 2026 reports that Sunlit Isle, near coordinates (405, -483), has six crude-oil nodes and can serve as a low-level base option. Coordinates and node counts are patch-sensitive. Check a current in-game map or current map reference when you travel, and treat the report as a lead rather than a permanent guarantee that the same six nodes will remain in the same positions.
Use this site-selection checklist
- Confirm that the oil field is visible and large enough for the extractor footprint.
- Stand on the intended foundation area and verify the extractor preview overlaps the deposit.
- Leave room for the electricity structures and storage that will support the extractor.
- Reserve space for the other production, housing, and transport structures your oil base will need.
- Choose a location you can defend and revisit; emergency chest runs are not a substitute for a stable field base.
There is no published universal “best” coordinate. The best oil base is the field that accepts the extractor placement and lets you supply its unusually high electrical load without sacrificing the rest of your base.

Plan electricity before you turn on production
Why the extractor causes brownouts
The Crude Oil Extractor has exceptionally high electrical demand. If generation is insufficient, it can rapidly drain stored electricity. Once the reserve is gone, other powered structures in the same base can shut down, so an oil installation may stall your incubators, crafting equipment, or other electrical machinery instead of merely producing oil slowly.
A safer build order
- Survey the field first. Place a foundation and test the extractor footprint before committing your materials.
- Build generation and storage. Reserve enough capacity for the extractor plus the powered structures you intend to keep running. The exact number of generators depends on your base configuration and is not fixed by the extractor recipe.
- Watch the stored charge. Let the electrical reserve build before connecting the extractor. A full or healthy reserve gives you time to see whether the base can sustain the load.
- Connect the extractor and observe the base. If storage falls rapidly, stop adding oil equipment and increase generation or storage first.
- Separate priorities if necessary. Run the oil extractor at a dedicated field base when your main base cannot maintain its other powered work.
Diagnose a power failure
- The extractor never starts: check that it overlaps an oil field and that the base has an active electricity supply.
- It starts, then other machines stop: stored electricity is being consumed faster than it is generated. Add generation or storage before attempting more oil production.
- Production is intermittent: compare the extractor’s demand with the base’s available power over time, not just immediately after construction. A reserve that looks adequate at startup can still be exhausted.
- Adding another extractor makes everything worse: treat each additional unit as a major electrical load and expand the power system before scaling.
The documented mechanic is continuous generation while the extractor is powered; a fixed oil-per-minute rate is not stated, so do not plan a refinery schedule around an assumed output number.
Ways to get Crude Oil before your base is ready
Oil-rig treasure chests
Treasure chests on oil rigs can contain Crude Oil. This is useful when you have reached an advanced recipe but have not yet gathered 250 Pal Metal Ingots, 50 Circuit Boards, or the electrical capacity for an extractor. Chest contents are a limited haul, so use them to bridge a shortage rather than as your long-term supply plan.
Drops from hostile Pals
Some hostile Pals drop Crude Oil. The drop is encounter-dependent: you must find the relevant enemies and obtain the material through combat, and the available quantity is not a guaranteed production stream. This method is suitable for a small emergency quantity, not for sustained Plasteel or ammunition manufacture.
Why merchants are not an option
Crude Oil cannot be bought from merchants according to the material’s listing. If you need more, your practical choices are field extraction, oil-rig chests, or qualifying hostile-Pal drops.

What Crude Oil is used for
The following recipes are the documented consumers of Crude Oil. Quantities shown are Crude Oil costs per output; other ingredients are included where they are specified, but their quantities are not supplied here.
| Recipe | Crude Oil cost | Other listed ingredients | What it produces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plasteel | 5 Crude Oil | Ore and Paldium Fragments | One unit of Plasteel |
| Flamethrower Fuel | 1 Crude Oil | Not stated | 5 units of fuel |
| Frag Grenade Mk2 | 3 Crude Oil | Gunpowder and Pal Metal Ingots | One grenade |
| Missile Ammo | 1 Crude Oil | Circuit Board, Pal Fluids, and Pal Metal Ingot | One round |
Plasteel: the heavy recurring cost
Plasteel consumes five Crude Oil per unit, alongside Ore and Paldium Fragments. Because the oil cost is higher than for the ammunition recipes listed here, Plasteel projects can empty a small emergency stock quickly. If your immediate goal is a new armor or equipment tier that uses Plasteel, reserve oil for that project before converting it into disposable ammunition.
Flamethrower Fuel
One Crude Oil makes five units of Flamethrower Fuel. This conversion can stretch a small stock when you specifically need the flamethrower, but it still competes with the same oil needed for Plasteel and explosives.
Frag Grenade Mk2
Each Frag Grenade Mk2 costs three Crude Oil, plus Gunpowder and Pal Metal Ingots. Keep a separate count for planned grenades so a combat session does not consume oil reserved for a construction milestone.
Missile Ammo
Each missile round costs one Crude Oil, together with a Circuit Board, Pal Fluids, and a Pal Metal Ingot. Missile use is therefore an ongoing draw on both oil and other advanced materials; a dedicated extractor becomes increasingly valuable if missiles are part of your regular loadout.

How to decide where each unit of oil goes
Use your next recipe as the allocation rule rather than crafting whatever is available first:
- Identify the next progression gate. If Plasteel is needed for a key upgrade, reserve five oil per planned unit before making fuel or explosives.
- Reserve combat ammunition separately. Multiply planned Frag Grenade Mk2 production by three and missile rounds by one, then set that amount aside with the required companion materials.
- Convert only the remainder. Flamethrower Fuel is efficient at five fuel per oil, but it should not consume stock needed for a higher-priority upgrade.
- Use emergency sources strategically. Spend rig-chest or enemy-drop oil on the immediate craft that unlocks progress while your field base is being assembled.
This approach prevents a common late-game trap: having enough Ore or Circuit Boards for a project but discovering that the Crude Oil was spent on lower-priority consumables.

Each method solves a different problem. Compare them by the resource scale you need, not by convenience during one trip.
| Method | Setup cost | Electricity | Repeatability | Combat exposure | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crude Oil Extractor on an oil field | Technology level 50, two technology points, 250 Pal Metal Ingots, and 50 Circuit Boards, plus a power build | Exceptionally high; insufficient generation can drain storage and stop other powered structures | Continuous while powered | Depends on the chosen base location | Sustained Plasteel and ammunition production |
| Oil-rig treasure chests | No extractor recipe; requires a trip to a rig | None at the chest | Limited chest supply | Encounter-dependent travel and looting risk | Bridging a shortfall before the base is ready |
| Hostile-Pal drops | No technology or structure cost, but requires finding qualifying enemies | None at the drop source | Encounter- and drop-dependent | Direct combat | Small emergency quantities |
The extractor has the highest initial investment and the greatest infrastructure burden, but it is the only option in this comparison described as continuous while powered. Rigs and enemy drops avoid electricity, yet neither gives you a predictable production base.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical oil-base workflow
- Set the objective. Decide whether the base is for a one-time Plasteel project, regular missile production, or general late-game stockpiling.
- Locate a field. Use visible deposits and verify the position in the current map. If you use the reported Sunlit Isle coordinates, recheck them because map locations can change between patches.
- Reach level 50 and unlock the technology. Spend the required two technology points only after confirming that oil is the next bottleneck you intend to solve.
- Bring the construction materials. Pack 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards for each extractor you plan to build.
- Build electricity first. Add generation and storage with enough headroom to avoid draining the base reserve immediately.
- Place the extractor over the deposit. Do not finalize a nearby placement that fails to overlap the oil field.
- Test the load. Watch the reserve and the operation of other powered structures. If the reserve falls quickly, expand power before adding more oil equipment.
- Set a spending reserve. Keep oil earmarked for your next Plasteel, Frag Grenade Mk2, missile, or fuel requirement instead of consuming the full stock as soon as it appears.
Common mistakes and fixes
Building beside, not on, the field
Symptom: the extractor is near an oil deposit but does not produce. Fix: reposition the structure until its footprint overlaps the visible oil field. Distance alone does not count.

Underestimating Pal Metal Ingots or Circuit Boards
Symptom: the field is ready, but the extractor cannot be crafted. Fix: gather the full recipe—250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards—before relocating to the site.
Powering the extractor from an already busy base
Symptom: several unrelated machines shut down after oil production begins. Fix: increase generation and storage, or move extraction to a dedicated field base. The extractor’s unusually high draw can exhaust stored electricity rapidly.
Expecting merchants to refill the tank
Symptom: repeated merchant visits produce no Crude Oil. Fix: use an oil field, an oil-rig chest, or a qualifying hostile-Pal drop; the material is not sold by merchants.
Relying on an old coordinate guide
Symptom: the reported node count or position does not match your map. Fix: treat coordinates and counts as patch-sensitive and verify the current map before planning your base around them.

When should you build the extractor?
Build it as soon as three conditions line up: you have reached technology level 50, can spare two technology points and the 250-ingot/50-board recipe, and can supply the extractor without collapsing your existing electrical network. If one condition is missing, use a rig chest or hostile-Pal drop for the smallest quantity that unblocks your immediate craft, then return to permanent extraction once the power and material requirements are met.
For a player producing Plasteel or ammunition continuously, a dedicated oil-field base is the durable answer. For a one-off recipe shortly after reaching the required tier, temporary sources can be more efficient than diverting an entire main base to an exceptionally demanding electrical load.
