The fastest reliable way to level in Palworld is to capture the first 12 examples of every Pal species you encounter, then chain dungeon runs, final Alpha captures, exploration objectives and enemy-base clears. Defeating wild Pals can help, but capture bonuses usually advance you faster while also filling your collection and supplying stronger team options. In late game, repeatable high-level content such as Oil Rig raids and legendary-Pal captures becomes worthwhile only when you can clear it consistently.

This guide reflects Palworld 1.0, released July 9, 2026. That update added 72 Pals, bringing the roster to 287, and increased the player level cap from 65 to 80. Exact rewards can change with later patches, so treat the route below as a priority system rather than a promise of fixed XP totals.

What changed in Palworld 1.0

Older leveling guides often stop at level 65 and focus almost entirely on fighting. The 1.0 update changed the practical route in three important ways:

  • The level cap is now 80 instead of 65.
  • The roster grew by 72 Pals to 287 total, creating many more species-capture opportunities.
  • Some dungeon and enemy-base clears now award exploration experience, so map progression can contribute directly to leveling.

Pocketpair also states that watchtowers reveal the surrounding map and function as fast-travel points. Activating them as you travel reduces the downtime that can erase the benefit of an otherwise efficient XP activity.

Check the EXP Rate setting

In a solo world or a server you administer, open the world-selection screen, choose the world, select Change World Settings, and adjust EXP Rate. The referenced settings data lists a range from 0.1 to 20. Higher values increase experience gained from the game’s activities; they do not create a special leveling method. State the multiplier when comparing your results with another player’s.

Players on someone else’s server may not have permission to change this value. If you are joining a hosted world, ask the administrator which multiplier is active before judging an XP route.

Prepare a rotation instead of one fragile party

  • Keep your strongest available combat Pals in the active party for dungeon and base work.
  • Carry several sphere tiers appropriate to the area. A missed or failed capture wastes more time than the small inventory space saved by carrying too few.
  • Bring healing items, ammunition and repair materials for any route that can end in a boss fight.
  • Send duplicate captures to the Palbox so your active party remains combat-ready while you work through new species.
  • Open nearby fast-travel points and watchtowers before committing to long loops.

Use a realistic success standard

XP per minute includes travel, healing, crafting, loading, failed captures and deaths. A theoretically lucrative activity that forces repeated retreats is slower than a modest route you can repeat without interruption. Track a complete loop from departure to the moment you are ready to start again.

Early game: capture the first 12 of each species

Why capturing beats repeatedly killing common Pals

The current leveling guide’s core rule is to capture the first 12 examples of each Pal species. Captures contribute to the collection and give you usable team members in addition to their experience reward. Killing the same common Pal over and over supplies only combat experience and does not complete the species-capture objective.

Do not interpret “12” as a reason to ignore every other Pal after your first capture. The efficient pattern is to finish the early captures for a species while you are already in its habitat, then move to another nearby species. This keeps travel short and steadily raises the number of completed species bonuses.

A practical early-game loop

  1. Choose a cluster of nearby habitats rather than crossing the entire map for one target.
  2. Activate a watchtower or fast-travel point on the way into the area.
  3. Capture enough examples of each available species to reach the first 12, using the best sphere you can afford without exhausting materials needed for survival.
  4. Keep high-level or useful-role captures in your party and move the rest to the Palbox.
  5. Gather ore, wood, food and other materials along the route so the trip also supports crafting and technology unlocks.
  6. Return through fast travel only when your inventory, healing supplies or sphere stock requires it; otherwise continue to the next nearby habitat.

Capture or fight?

Capture when a species is new to your collection, when you need a stronger party member, or when the target can be secured with a reasonable sphere cost. Fight when a capture is unlikely to succeed, when you need to clear a dangerous group quickly, or when you are protecting scarce spheres for a higher-value target. For early leveling, fighting should support the capture loop rather than replace it.

Mid game: make dungeons the core repeatable route

Why dungeons are efficient

Dungeons combine several useful outcomes in one trip: ordinary Pal encounters, chest loot, a final Alpha Pal, and exploration progress. Their layouts and spawns are semi-random, and dungeons vary by tier, so travel time and difficulty differ from run to run.

Capture the final Alpha when you can

The dungeon reference reports that the final Alpha Pal awards nearly twice the experience of capturing a non-dungeon variant. This is a relative comparison, not a universal XP number, and the exact reward can be affected by later balancing. Bring enough spheres and survivability to attempt the capture without turning the run into a death loop.

Rank #2

If you cannot capture the Alpha reliably, defeating it may still finish the run, but the missed capture removes one of the dungeon’s largest leveling advantages. Improve sphere quality, weaken the Alpha carefully, or return at a higher level rather than repeatedly spending supplies on failed attempts.

How to evaluate a dungeon loop

  • XP per minute: include the entrance journey, clearing time, capture attempts and return trip.
  • Travel time: a nearby lower-tier dungeon can outperform a distant higher-tier one if the latter requires a long flight or climb.
  • Failure risk: count deaths, forced retreats and lost time, not just the reward shown after a successful run.
  • Consumable cost: record spheres, ammunition, healing items and repair materials used per completion.
  • Secondary value: chest loot and materials may unlock the next technology tier, making the run more valuable than its XP alone suggests.

Exploration and enemy bases now contribute XP

Palworld 1.0 added exploration experience for clearing some dungeons and enemy bases. The wording matters: not every map action or every structure is guaranteed to award the same reward. Treat these clears as part of your route when they are on the way to a new area, not as a reason to cross the map for an unverified payout.

Build exploration into normal travel

  1. Open the map before leaving your current base and identify an unactivated watchtower or fast-travel point along the route.
  2. Activate the point as soon as the area is safe. Watchtowers reveal nearby terrain and provide a return option.
  3. Clear an enemy base only when your party and equipment can finish it without a likely wipe.
  4. Enter a dungeon when its tier matches your current survivability and sphere supply.
  5. Use the newly opened fast-travel network to shorten the next collection or dungeon loop.

This approach turns exploration from sightseeing into a multiplier for every later activity: less travel means more captures and clears per hour, while the qualifying dungeon and base completions add their own exploration experience.

Late game: high-level targets and raids

Oil Rig raids

The current fan guide places Oil Rig raids in the late-game route. They can provide substantial combat and exploration value, but they are not automatically the best XP-per-minute option. The route only wins when your weapons, armor, party and healing stock let you clear the rig repeatedly without long recovery periods or failed attempts.

Legendary-Pal captures

Legendary captures, including examples such as Jetragon and Frostallion, are another late-game recommendation. Their value is not limited to experience: a successful capture can materially improve your party and gives you a high-end target worth preparing for. Do not treat the examples as a guaranteed ranking of every legendary encounter; the guide does not publish a reproducible XP table.

Choose repeatability over spectacle

A failed Oil Rig or legendary attempt produces worse XP per minute than a dungeon loop you can complete consistently. Move into high-level content only after you can survive the encounter, carry enough appropriate spheres, and replace ammunition and healing supplies between runs.

Which activity is best at each stage?

Activity Best use XP-per-minute outlook Travel and risk Extra progress
First 12 captures per species Early and mid game Strong while new species are nearby; no version-locked numeric rate stated Low risk when targeting local habitats; travel rises if you chase isolated species Collection completion and additional party members
Dungeon with final Alpha capture Mid game and beyond High potential; the final Alpha capture is reported at nearly twice the experience of a non-dungeon capture Moderate risk; tier and layout are semi-random Chest loot, materials, exploration experience on qualifying clears
Enemy-base clear Exploration-focused progression Variable; no reproducible XP figure stated Risk depends on base level and party readiness Exploration experience and access to the surrounding map
Watchtower and fast-travel activation Every stage Indirect benefit through reduced travel; no standalone XP figure stated Usually low once the area is safe Map visibility and faster future routes
Oil Rig raid Late game Potentially strong, but no guaranteed ranking or XP table is published High danger and high consumable cost if underprepared Late-game loot and combat practice
Legendary-Pal capture Late game Valuable target, but exact XP comparison is not established High preparation and failure risk Powerful party addition and collection progress

No primary, version-locked table gives XP for every action, and no reproducible time-to-level benchmark is established. Use the table to choose a route based on consistency, travel and secondary rewards rather than inventing a universal “best” number.

A complete fast-leveling route

Levels and areas before reliable dungeon clears

Start with local species captures. Finish the first 12 for each species that shares your current travel circuit, activate watchtowers, and gather materials while moving. Upgrade spheres and equipment as soon as your technology and resources allow. Keep a balanced active party so a failed capture attempt does not force a base trip.

Once dungeons become comfortable

Choose the nearest dungeon whose final Alpha you can weaken and capture. Clear ordinary encounters, open useful chests, attempt the Alpha capture, then use fast travel to begin the next run or return for supplies. Add a qualifying enemy-base clear when it lies on the same route and your party can finish it safely.

After reaching high-level regions

Continue collecting uncaptured species during travel, but make repeatable dungeons and selected exploration clears your baseline. Test an Oil Rig or legendary encounter only when the preparation cost is justified by a realistic clear rate. If two attempts in a row end in a retreat, switch back to the dungeon loop and strengthen your equipment before trying again.

How to improve XP per minute without changing the EXP Rate

  • Reduce empty travel: activate every practical watchtower and fast-travel point during collection circuits.
  • Batch supplies: craft spheres, ammunition and healing items before leaving so production downtime is not counted as hunting time.
  • Use habitat clusters: complete several species’ first-12 captures in one region before moving on.
  • Keep a capture-ready party: avoid replacing every team member with low-level duplicates from the current area.
  • Record complete runs: measure from departure to readiness for the next run, including sorting loot and repairing gear.
  • Stop bad runs early: retreat before a death when the current route has clearly exceeded its normal healing or ammunition budget.

Common mistakes and fixes

Grinding kills instead of completing captures

Symptom: your level rises slowly while nearby species remain incomplete. Fix: carry suitable spheres and prioritize each species’ first 12 captures before farming ordinary defeats.

Ignoring the final dungeon Alpha

Symptom: you finish dungeons but spend the run’s biggest opportunity on a defeat because captures fail. Fix: enter with better spheres, weaken the Alpha safely, and attempt the capture only when your party can survive the process.

Taking on late-game content too early

Symptom: an Oil Rig or legendary attempt consumes supplies and ends in a retreat. Fix: return to a repeatable dungeon route, improve armor, weapons, party levels and sphere stock, then test the encounter again.

Forgetting the world multiplier

Symptom: your results do not match a friend’s route. Fix: compare the EXP Rate first. A world set near 0.1 and one set near 20 cannot be judged by the same XP-per-hour expectation.

Using old level-cap advice

Symptom: a guide tells you the journey ends at level 65. Fix: plan for the current cap of 80 and treat pre-1.0 stopping points as incomplete for a current playthrough.

Server, co-op and difficulty considerations

The capture-first route works in co-op, but coordinate species targets so two players do not waste spheres capturing the same low-value targets while another player clears a dungeon. Split responsibilities only when the group can still protect the capture bonus: one player can weaken an Alpha while another handles spheres and healing.

Frequently asked questions

Is catching always better than killing in Palworld?

No. Capturing is the priority for a new species and its first 12 examples, but fighting is useful when a capture is unsafe, spheres are scarce, or you need to clear a threat quickly. The fastest route uses both actions for different purposes.

Do all dungeons give the same amount of experience?

No fixed, version-locked XP table is established here. Dungeons vary by tier, layout and final Alpha, so compare complete runs rather than assuming every entrance has an identical reward.

Does every enemy base award exploration experience?

The 1.0 wording says exploration experience is available for clearing some enemy bases and dungeons. Treat the reward as activity-specific rather than guaranteed for every structure.

What is the highest EXP Rate I can set?

The referenced World Settings data lists a range from 0.1 to 20. Availability depends on whether you control the solo world or server.

What level should I be before Oil Rig raids?

There is no single level threshold that guarantees success. Start when your armor, weapons, spheres, party and supplies let you clear the raid consistently; otherwise a repeatable dungeon route is more efficient.

The Bottom Line

For the current level-80 game, capture the first 12 of each nearby species, build fast-travel coverage, then repeat dungeons that end in an Alpha capture. Add qualifying exploration and enemy-base clears while traveling, and move to Oil Rig raids or legendary captures only when they are reliably repeatable. Your real fastest route is the activity that delivers steady completions with minimal travel, deaths and consumable waste.
