Palworld Server Won’t Start: How to Fix Launch, Connection, and Xbox Issues

A step-by-step Palworld server troubleshooting guide: separate startup crashes from network failures, repair SteamCMD and Windows prerequisites, validate PalWorldSettings.ini, forward UDP 8211 and 27015, diagnose CGNAT, and configure community servers for Xbox and PS5.

Palworld server problems fall into two different failures: PalServer.exe (or PalServer.sh) will not remain running, or the server stays running but players cannot reach it. Diagnose the branch first. A missing executable, runtime error, bad DLL, or malformed configuration needs an installation fix; a timeout, absent listing, or platform-specific join failure needs firewall, port, router, NAT, or server-mode work.

Work through the checks below in order. Do not start by changing router rules when the process itself closes, and do not reinstall the server when it is already running and only unreachable from the internet.

Start by identifying the failure

What you observe Most likely area First check
PalServer.exe opens and closes, or the Linux script exits Installation, runtime, DLL, configuration, process conflict, or security software Run the official executable or script from a console and read the error before changing network settings.
The process remains visible, but nobody can join Firewall, router forwarding, NAT, public IP, or an incorrect server mode Try a connection from the host or the same LAN using the host’s local IP and port 8211.
Steam can connect, but Xbox or PlayStation 5 cannot Dedicated/direct-IP versus community-server requirements Configure and advertise a community server, then use the platform’s supported connection mode.
The server works locally but not from outside the home network Forwarding, fixed local address, CGNAT, or ISP restrictions Check the router rule and whether the public address is actually assigned to your connection.

Keep a short record while troubleshooting: the operating system, the command used to launch the server, the configured game port, the host’s local address, and the exact last lines in the server log. That information prevents repeating the same test under a different name.

When the server process will not stay running

A server that exits before it can accept a local connection is not a port-forwarding problem. Repair the installation and startup environment first.

1. Confirm that the installation is complete

Open the actual Palworld dedicated-server directory rather than a desktop shortcut or an old backup. On Windows, the documented program is PalServer.exe. On Linux, use PalServer.sh. Launch that file directly. If PalServer.exe is absent, changing an .ini value cannot help: the server files were not installed correctly.

SteamCMD installation failures commonly leave the folder without the executable or without the generated configuration. Retry the installation in the intended SteamCMD directory. If the file never appears after a clean retry, remove the incomplete server folder, create a new installation location, and run the installation again rather than copying a random executable from another machine. Keep your world and configuration backups separate so a reinstall does not destroy them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Run it from a console so the error remains visible

A double-clicked Windows executable can close before you read the diagnostic text. Open Command Prompt, change to the PalServer directory, and start PalServer.exe there. Leave that window open while you test. On Linux, run the documented shell script from a terminal and capture the final lines if it exits. The exact error often distinguishes a missing runtime from an invalid setting or a file-access denial.

Do not treat a clean return to the prompt as proof that the server is healthy. Confirm that the process remains listed in Task Manager or your Linux process monitor and that a server log is being written. If it starts and then stops after loading, note whether the last message concerns a configuration file, a port, a missing library, or world data.

3. Repair Windows prerequisites

The Windows troubleshooting guidance lists the DirectX Runtime and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable as prerequisites. Install or repair those components from Microsoft, restart Windows, and launch the server again from Command Prompt. Repairing an existing installation is preferable to installing several unrelated runtime packages at random.

Security software can also terminate a newly downloaded executable. Check the antivirus or endpoint-security history for a quarantine or blocked-child-process event. Restore or allow the server only after verifying that the files came from your own SteamCMD installation, and create a narrowly scoped exception for the server directory instead of disabling protection system-wide.

4. Investigate the documented Steam DLL crash condition

One community troubleshooting guide describes immediate crashes associated with missing Steam libraries. For that specific condition, it discusses verifying or copying these files into the server installation as directed by the guide:

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Xbox 360 Standard Edition
  • The No. 1 LEGO videogame franchise triumphantly returns with a fun-filled, humorous journey based on the blockbuster Star Wars film.
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • tier0_s64.dll
  • tier0_s.dll
  • vstdlib_s.dll
  • vstdlib_s64.dll
  • steamclient.dll
  • steamclient64.dll

Use this as a diagnostic lead, not as a universal crash cure. Copy only matching files from a trusted, compatible Steam installation or repair the SteamCMD download. Replacing DLLs with versions from an unrelated game or an unofficial download can create a different crash and makes later diagnosis harder. If the console reports another missing library, follow that message instead of applying this list blindly.

5. Generate the configuration before editing it

Official Palworld instructions have the operator start the server once, stop it cleanly, and then edit the generated PalWorldSettings.ini in the platform-specific saved-configuration directory. Follow that sequence even if you intend to change only a server name or password. A first run creates the expected directory structure and a known-good baseline.

  1. Start the official executable or script with no custom configuration changes.
  2. Wait until the process has completed its initial setup, then stop it using the normal shutdown method.
  3. Locate the generated PalWorldSettings.ini under the saved configuration directory for your operating system.
  4. Make one change, preserve the existing syntax and quotation marks, save the file, and restart.
  5. If the next launch fails, undo that single change. This identifies the offending value without losing a working baseline.

Do not put the file in the installation root merely because it is easier to find. A misplaced file can make the server appear to ignore settings or fail during startup. Avoid pasting a settings block with typographic quotation marks, stray comments, or a missing delimiter.

6. Rule out a second process and resource conflicts

A previous PalServer process may still be running after a management window closed. Check Task Manager on Windows or the process list on Linux, end the stale process gracefully, and launch only one instance. Two instances configured for the same ports will cause one to exit or bind only part of its services.

Also check whether another application is using the configured ports. The operating system’s resource and network tools can show listening sockets; compare the process ID with the PalServer process before changing ports. If the server loads a large world and then exits, watch CPU, memory, and disk activity while it starts. No universal CPU, RAM, or disk minimum applies to every current Palworld version, so use the log and the operating-system monitor instead of relying on an unsupported specification.

Make sure the account running the server can read and write the installation and saved-data directories. A service account with read-only access may launch far enough to display a window and then stop when it cannot create a log, world, or configuration file.

7. Read the startup log methodically

Look at the last successful initialization line and the first error after it. The distinction matters:

  • An error parsing PalWorldSettings.ini points to syntax, encoding, placement, or a value changed in the last edit.
  • A bind or address-in-use message points to a duplicate process or another application on the port.
  • A security or access-denied message points to antivirus controls, permissions, or a protected directory.

After every correction, stop the process completely, apply one change, and perform a fresh launch. Restarting repeatedly without recording the last error can hide which change actually fixed the problem.

When the server runs but players cannot join

Once the process remains running, test reachability from the inside out. This prevents an internet problem from being mistaken for a broken server.

1. Test from the host or the same LAN

From the host machine or another device on the same network, connect to the host’s private IP address and game port 8211. The local address is usually in a private range such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x; use the address assigned to the machine actually running PalServer, not the router’s address.

If a local client can join, the executable, world, and basic game port are working. Move to firewall, forwarding, public-address, and NAT checks. If a local client cannot join, stay on the host: verify that PalServer is listening, that the client is using the configured port, and that the local firewall allows the traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Allow PalServer through the host firewall

On Windows, permit PalServer.exe through Windows Firewall when prompted. If the prompt was dismissed, open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and create an inbound rule for the server program or the required UDP ports. Apply the rule to the network profiles the host actually uses; a rule limited to Private networks will not help when Windows has classified the connection as Public.

Keep the rule narrow. Allow the PalServer executable and required UDP traffic rather than opening every inbound port. After changing the rule, retry the local connection first and then test from an outside network.

3. Forward the correct UDP ports

The troubleshooting documentation identifies the following roles:

Port Protocol Purpose Exposure guidance
8211 UDP Game traffic and player connections Forward to the server host when internet players need to join.
27015 UDP Query and server-list traffic Forward when discovery or query responses are required.
25575 RCON Remote administration Keep private unless you intentionally need remote administration; do not expose it by default.

Create the router rules for the correct protocol, not a generic TCP-only rule. Forward each required port to the host’s fixed local IP. Then confirm that the rule still points to that same device after a reboot; DHCP can silently assign a different private address and invalidate an otherwise correct rule.

4. Give the host a stable local address

Use a DHCP reservation in the router or a correctly configured static address so the Palworld machine keeps the same private IP. A reservation is usually safer for home networks because it avoids duplicate-address mistakes while keeping the router in control. Record the address, the forwarding targets, and the firewall profile in your server notes.

Do not forward to the computer currently in front of you unless it is also the PalServer host. If the dedicated server runs on a separate desktop, mini-PC, or Linux box, its private address is the one that belongs in every forwarding rule.

5. Check the public address and CGNAT

If local joining works and forwarding appears correct but friends outside the network time out, determine whether the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). Under CGNAT, the router’s “WAN” address is shared or differs from the public address visible on the internet, so unsolicited inbound traffic cannot reach your home even with perfect port rules.

Use a reputable CGNAT detector or compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by an independent service. If they do not match in the way the detector describes, ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 address is available. A static public address, a VPN or tunnel service designed for inbound game traffic, or managed hosting are possible network-architecture solutions. Buying a different Ethernet cable or repeatedly recreating the same port rule will not remove CGNAT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Distinguish a timeout from a listing problem

A direct-IP connection and a server-list entry use different paths. A server can accept a direct connection on 8211 while query traffic on 27015 is blocked, leaving it absent from a browser or community list. Test the direct address first, then verify the query port and the server’s registration settings. Do not open RCON simply to make a listing appear.

Why Steam works while Xbox or PlayStation 5 cannot join

Official documentation distinguishes a dedicated server from a community server. A dedicated server is normally joined by entering an IP address and port. A community server is a dedicated server registered so it appears in the in-game list. Xbox and PlayStation 5 players require the community-server approach; the normal Steam direct-IP path is not interchangeable with their console workflow.

  • Smash, swing and fly in the first Lego video game featuring more than 100 of your favorite super heroes and super villains from the Marvel Universe, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Loki and Deadpool.
  • Perform new and powerful moves as “Big-fig” characters like Hulk and Abomination. Leave a path of destruction as you smash through Lego walls and throw cars using hyper strength.

What to change for Xbox

  1. Keep the PalServer process running and confirm the game port works locally.
  2. Configure the server as a community server rather than relying only on a direct address.
  3. Use the community-server registration and query settings required by the current Palworld documentation, including the query path associated with UDP 27015.
  4. For Xbox, change the connection platform from the Steam default in the server setup. Leaving the default unchanged can produce a server that Steam users can reach while Xbox users cannot discover or join it.
  5. Test from an Xbox account after the server appears in the community list; do not use a successful Steam test as proof of console compatibility.

PlayStation 5 users likewise depend on community-server discovery. If the entry is missing, verify registration, query traffic, and the public reachability of the host before troubleshooting the console itself.

Common cross-platform mistakes

  • Calling a direct-IP dedicated server “cross-play” without registering it as a community server.
  • Forwarding 8211 but blocking or omitting the query traffic needed for list discovery.
  • Changing the Xbox platform setting but leaving the host behind CGNAT.
  • Testing only from the same LAN, where hairpin-NAT behavior can hide an external reachability problem.

Server missing from the community list

First confirm that the process is healthy and that a local client can connect. Then check, in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The server is configured for community mode, not only direct-IP use.
  2. The query port is set to UDP 27015 where required by the setup.
  3. The router forwards the query port to the same fixed local IP as the game port.
  4. The host firewall allows inbound UDP query traffic.
  5. The server has a reachable public address and is not blocked by CGNAT.
  6. The selected platform mode matches the players you are trying to support.

List propagation can take longer than a local launch, so keep the process running while checking. If direct-IP connections work but the list remains empty, concentrate on query and registration settings rather than reinstalling the world.

Self-hosting, management tools, and managed hosting

Choose the operating model that matches the problem you are willing to own. The technical trade-offs are different, not merely cosmetic.

Option Control Reachability Maintenance Best fit
Self-host on your own Windows or Linux machine Full access to files, logs, settings, mods, and ports Depends on forwarding, public addressing, and CGNAT You handle SteamCMD updates, restarts, backups, firewall rules, and monitoring Operators who can manage a host and network
Server-management software Still uses your machine, but automates parts of installation, updates, firewall rules, and restarts Still depends on your router and ISP unless the tool supplies another transport Less manual work, but the tool adds its own configuration and update dependency Owners who want automation without moving the server
Managed Palworld hosting Provider abstracts operating-system and port administration Usually supplies a reachable endpoint, subject to the provider’s network and region Provider handles much of the service operation; you must verify backups, updates, support, and terms Groups blocked by CGNAT or needing predictable 24/7 availability

Before choosing a managed service, verify the current region, player capacity, backup policy, update timing, console/community-server support, cancellation terms, and whether you retain access to world files. Those details vary by provider and can change; they are not established by the troubleshooting information above.

A complete recovery sequence

Use this checklist when you need a single, repeatable path from failure to verification:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether the process exits or stays running.
  2. Open the PalServer installation directory and verify PalServer.exe on Windows or PalServer.sh on Linux.
  3. If the executable is missing, retry or reinstall the SteamCMD installation before touching network settings.
  4. Launch from a console and save the exact error and final log lines.
  5. On Windows, repair DirectX Runtime and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable if the log indicates a runtime failure.
  6. Check the documented Steam DLL condition only when the crash matches it; verify the six named libraries from a trusted compatible installation.
  7. Start once, stop cleanly, and edit the generated PalWorldSettings.ini in the correct saved-configuration directory.
  8. Change one setting at a time and undo the last change if startup fails.
  9. Check for duplicate PalServer processes, port conflicts, permissions, and security-software blocks.
  10. After the process stays up, test from the host or LAN using the private IP and UDP 8211.
  11. Allow the executable through the host firewall and forward UDP 8211 to the fixed local IP.
  12. Forward UDP 27015 when query or community-list traffic is needed; leave RCON 25575 private unless intentionally required.
  13. If local works but remote access fails, investigate the public address and CGNAT with the ISP or a network detector.
  14. For Xbox or PlayStation 5, use community-server registration and the correct platform mode instead of assuming a Steam direct-IP test proves compatibility.

What not to do

  • Do not troubleshoot router forwarding while PalServer.exe is missing or immediately crashing.
  • Do not quote a universal RAM, CPU, or disk minimum when the Palworld version and workload are unspecified.
  • Do not expose RCON to the internet just because the game port is forwarded.
  • Do not copy arbitrary DLLs from download sites or unrelated games.
  • Do not edit several configuration values at once; you will not know which one caused the failure.
  • Do not assume that a server visible to Steam is automatically available to Xbox or PlayStation 5.
  • Do not forward ports to a changing DHCP address and then conclude that the router is unreliable.

When escalation is justified

Escalate to your ISP or a managed network solution when local connections are reliable, the firewall and forwarding rules are correct, and the connection is confirmed to be behind CGNAT or another inbound restriction. Escalate to a hosting or management provider when you need continuous uptime but cannot maintain SteamCMD updates, backups, restarts, and security rules. In either case, keep a copy of the world data and the last startup log so the next operator can reproduce the diagnosis.
