Palworld WorldOption.sav vs PalWorldSettings.ini Explained

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PalWorldSettings.ini controls server-wide settings, while WorldOption.sav stores settings for one particular Palworld world. Both files can contain world-related values, but an existing WorldOption.sav can take precedence over a matching INI value. That is why editing the INI, restarting the server, and seeing no change is common.

Use the active INI for server identity and network options. Use a corrected or regenerated WorldOption.sav when a world setting is being shadowed, including cases where BaseCampWorkerMaxNum does not apply on a dedicated server.

What each Palworld file actually does

PalWorldSettings.ini is server configuration

PalWorldSettings.ini is an editable text file read from the dedicated server’s active platform-specific configuration directory. It is intended for settings that describe the server itself, such as its name, passwords, ports, RCON options, and REST API options. You can open it in a text editor, change a value, save the file, and apply the change after a complete server restart.

The official Palworld guide places the active file at:

  • Windows dedicated server: Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini
  • Linux dedicated server: Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini

Palworld also provides DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini as a template. Copy that template into the appropriate WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory and edit the resulting PalWorldSettings.ini. Editing only the default template does not alter the file the running server reads.

WorldOption.sav belongs to one world

WorldOption.sav is a binary save file inside a world’s directory. A typical dedicated-server path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<WorldID>/WorldOption.sav

The same directory normally contains Level.sav and LevelMeta.sav. Unlike the INI, the SAV file travels with that world. Moving the world to another server can therefore carry its saved world options with it.

PalWorldSettings.ini and WorldOption.sav compared

Comparison PalWorldSettings.ini WorldOption.sav
Scope Server-wide configuration Settings saved for one world
Format Plain-text INI Binary SAV
Location Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/ Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<WorldID>/
Typical examples Server name, server and administrator passwords, ports, RCON, REST API World-specific options that have been saved into that world
How you change it Edit text, save, then restart Replace, remove, or regenerate the binary file, then restart
Portability Belongs to the server configuration Travels with the individual world save
Precedence Can be shadowed when a matching value exists in the world SAV Can take precedence for matching world settings

Why changing PalWorldSettings.ini can appear to do nothing

The usual cause is not a misspelled value or a failed restart. It is precedence. If WorldOption.sav already contains a matching world setting, that saved value can override the value supplied by PalWorldSettings.ini. The server starts normally, but the world continues using its saved option.

This distinction matters because the two files are read for different purposes. The INI remains the right place for server-level values. A saved world option, however, may be treated as the authoritative value for that world. Editing the INI repeatedly will not replace an existing shadowing value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical symptom

  • You stop the server and edit the correct active INI.
  • You save the file and restart completely.
  • The server accepts the restart without an error.
  • The affected world still behaves exactly as before.

When those conditions match, inspect the world directory for WorldOption.sav. Do not assume that a successful restart means every INI value won precedence.

How to find the active files

Find the active INI

  1. Identify whether the dedicated server is running on Windows or Linux.
  2. Open the server’s Pal/Saved/Config/ directory.
  3. Enter WindowsServer on Windows or LinuxServer on Linux.
  4. Open PalWorldSettings.ini. This is the file to edit.

If that file does not exist, locate DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini, copy it into the matching platform directory, rename the copy to PalWorldSettings.ini if necessary, and edit the active copy. A template left in the wrong directory is not read as the live configuration.

Find the world SAV

  1. Open Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/.
  2. Identify the directory named for the target world’s <WorldID>.
  3. Open that world directory.
  4. Look for WorldOption.sav beside Level.sav and LevelMeta.sav.

A server can contain multiple world directories. Changing a SAV in the wrong <WorldID> directory changes nothing for the world you are testing.

Which file should contain a setting?

Use the INI for server identity and access

Keep values that describe the server or its administration in PalWorldSettings.ini. Documented examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Server name
  • Server password
  • Administrator password
  • Network ports
  • RCON settings
  • REST API settings

These values are not made world-specific merely because a world save also exists. Edit the active platform directory’s INI, restart the server, and verify the result using the normal server or administrative checks.

Use the world SAV for shadowed world options

World gameplay options can be present in both configuration layers. If the world already has a value in WorldOption.sav, that saved value may win. In that case, changing the corresponding INI line alone is insufficient. The practical fix is to replace or remove the existing SAV, or generate a new SAV containing the intended values.

Do not infer scope from the setting name

A parameter appearing in the INI does not prove that the live value will always come from the INI. Scope and precedence are separate questions: the INI is server configuration, while the SAV is world state, and a matching saved world value can shadow the text configuration.

Safe procedure for changing a setting

Use this sequence whenever a configuration change affects an active dedicated server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server completely. Do not replace a save file while the server process is still writing it. Wait until the process has exited and any host control panel reports the server as stopped.
  2. Back up the world. Copy the entire target <WorldID> directory, including Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, and WorldOption.sav if present. Keep the backup outside the live save path and label it with the date and the intended change.
  3. Edit the active INI for server-level values. Use the correct WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory. Do not edit only DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini.
  4. Check for a shadowing SAV. If the target is a world option and WorldOption.sav exists, assume it may override the INI until you have tested otherwise.
  5. Choose a SAV operation. Remove or replace the existing file only after the backup is complete. If you need to preserve several options, generate a corrected SAV from a complete, verified set of desired INI values rather than creating a partial binary file.
  6. Place the SAV correctly. The resulting WorldOption.sav belongs in the same world directory as Level.sav and LevelMeta.sav, not in Pal/Saved/Config/.
  7. Start the server. Allow the normal startup process to finish before connecting.
  8. Verify in the affected world. Test the setting in-game or through the server’s normal administrative checks. Confirm that you changed the intended <WorldID>, not another world on the same installation.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  1. Stop the Palworld server and make a complete backup of the target world directory.
  2. Prepare the desired values in PalWorldSettings.ini.
  3. Use the project’s conversion process to generate a WorldOption.sav from those values.
  4. Copy the generated file into the world directory beside Level.sav and LevelMeta.sav.
  5. Restart the server and verify the setting in the world.

The converter is not a reason to skip backups. A malformed or incorrectly targeted SAV can prevent the intended option from loading, and replacing a live save without a recoverable copy removes your easiest rollback path.

BaseCampWorkerMaxNum: the important exception

BaseCampWorkerMaxNum controls the maximum number of workers assigned to a base. The current official Palworld guide, version 1.0.4, documents a maximum of 50 workers per base.

That parameter illustrates why the two-file distinction matters. It is listed as a configurable INI parameter, but configuration-tool documentation separately warns that some INI entries, including BaseCampWorkerMaxNum, may not work on dedicated servers. When the INI value is ignored, the documented workaround is to put the desired value into WorldOption.sav through the conversion workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying the worker limit change

  1. Stop the dedicated server.
  2. Back up the relevant world directory.
  3. Set BaseCampWorkerMaxNum to the desired value in the source INI used by the conversion process.
  4. Generate a new WorldOption.sav.
  5. Copy it into the target world’s directory beside Level.sav and LevelMeta.sav.
  6. Restart the server and test the worker count in that world.

Do not report a value above 50 as supported by the cited official guide. If the server still shows the old limit, confirm that the generated SAV is in the correct <WorldID> directory and that the server was fully stopped before replacement.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Action
INI edits never change the world A matching value in WorldOption.sav is shadowing the INI Back up the world, then replace or remove the SAV, or generate a corrected one
Server name or password does not change The wrong INI was edited, or the file is in the wrong platform directory Use WindowsServer or LinuxServer according to the server OS and edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini
Worker count remains unchanged BaseCampWorkerMaxNum may not apply from the INI on a dedicated server Use the WorldOption conversion workflow and verify the resulting SAV is beside the level saves
Change affects no world The SAV was placed in Config or in another world’s directory Place it under SaveGames/0/<WorldID>/ for the world being tested
World fails to load after a SAV replacement The file is invalid, incomplete, or was copied while the server was running Stop the server, restore the backed-up world directory, and repeat the conversion with a clean source
Changes revert after restart A host panel, deployment process, or another administrator restored an older file Compare timestamps and retain one authoritative backup and change record before restarting again

Backups, migration, and portability

Back up the world, not just the INI

Backing up only PalWorldSettings.ini does not protect a world-specific change. The setting that actually wins may be inside WorldOption.sav, so preserve the complete world directory before replacing it.

Moving a world to another server

Copying the world directory carries its saved world options with it. That portability is useful when migrating a world, but it can also surprise administrators who expect the destination server’s INI to take over. After migration, inspect the copied WorldOption.sav before assuming destination-side INI edits will override it.

Keeping configuration understandable

  • Record whether a value is server-wide or world-specific.
  • Keep dated backups before every SAV replacement.
  • Note the target <WorldID> in your change log.
  • After restart, verify the effective value rather than only checking that the process started.

Administrator decision checklist

  • Is the setting about the server’s identity, access, ports, RCON, or REST API? Edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini.
  • Is it a world gameplay option that refuses to change? Inspect the target world’s WorldOption.sav.
  • Does the option appear in both files? Treat the existing SAV as a possible override.
  • Is the parameter BaseCampWorkerMaxNum? Remember the official 50-worker maximum and use the SAV conversion route if the dedicated server ignores the INI.
  • Are you replacing a binary save? Stop the server and make a full world backup first.
  • Did the change fail? Verify the operating-system directory, world ID, file placement, and complete restart before changing another value.
