“Surface Book Pro 4” is not one Microsoft model: Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 are separate product families. Confirm which one you own before installing firmware or drivers. On Windows 10, work through permissions, an app-only test, security controls, Device Manager, model-specific Surface updates, UEFI settings and a force restart. This order separates a blocked camera from a driver, firmware or hardware fault without replacing the wrong package.
First identify the exact Surface model
Open Start > Settings > System > About and record the model shown there. A Surface Pro 4 and a Surface Book generation use different firmware and driver packages. Do not use a download labeled for the other family simply because both names appear in searches. The Windows 10 troubleshooting steps below apply to either family, but every Surface update must match the model and operating-system version displayed on your device.

Also note whether the problem affects the front camera, the rear camera (where fitted), or both; whether it began immediately after a Windows or Surface update; and whether the camera is missing everywhere or fails only in one meeting app. Those details determine which branch to follow.
Use the symptom to choose the right branch
| What you see | What it usually indicates | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The Camera app shows a live preview, but Teams, a browser or another program cannot use it. | The camera hardware and Windows driver are probably available; the affected app, its permissions or another process is blocking access. | Check app permissions, close competing programs and select the intended camera inside that app. |
| Every app reports that no camera is available, or Windows shows 0xA00F4244 “NoCamerasAreAttached.” | Windows is not detecting the device. Missing, outdated or corrupted drivers are common causes. | Inspect Device Manager, reinstall the camera device, then install updates for the exact Surface model. |
| The camera is listed in Windows but is disabled. | The device is present but disabled at the operating-system level. | Enable it in Device Manager and retest in the Camera app. |
| The camera is absent from Windows and remains absent after driver repair. | A UEFI setting, firmware problem or physical fault is possible. | Check Surface UEFI, perform a correct force restart and escalate for service if detection does not return. |
1. Turn on every Windows 10 camera permission
Windows 10 has separate controls for the device, ordinary apps, Microsoft Store apps and desktop applications. A single restrictive switch can make a healthy camera appear broken to every program.

- Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera.
- Under Allow access to the camera on this device, select Change and turn access on.
- Turn on Allow apps to access your camera.
- Review the individual app switches and enable access for the program that fails.
- Turn on Allow desktop apps to access your camera. Browsers and many conferencing clients, including desktop installations of meeting software, use this permission rather than the Store-app switch.
Close and reopen the affected program after changing a permission. If an organization manages the computer, a policy may immediately restore a disabled setting; in that case, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the switch.
2. Test with the built-in Camera app
Open Start, type Camera, and launch the Windows Camera app. Check whether its preview appears and whether you can switch between available cameras.
- Preview works: Windows can communicate with the camera. Concentrate on the failing browser or meeting app: verify its selected camera, review its own privacy setting, update or repair that app, and close duplicate tabs or sessions.
- Preview fails everywhere: Continue with the device, driver and firmware checks below.
Only one process may hold a camera at a time. Before retesting, close Teams, Zoom, browser tabs that requested camera access, recording utilities, virtual-camera software and any other program that may still be using the device. If necessary, save work and restart Windows to release a process that did not close cleanly.

3. Check security software and organization policy
Some antivirus and endpoint-security products include a camera-privacy control that blocks access independently of Windows’ Privacy page. Open the security product’s settings and review its camera or webcam protection area. Temporarily changing that control for a controlled test can identify the cause; restore the protection afterward.
Error 0xA00F4292 can also result from an enterprise group-policy restriction. On a work or school Surface, ask the IT administrator whether camera access is prohibited and whether the policy permits the specific application you are trying to use. Do not bypass an organization’s policy on a managed device.
4. Repair the camera device in Device Manager
When Windows reports 0xA00F4244 “NoCamerasAreAttached,” Microsoft describes the condition as Windows failing to recognize a built-in or external camera. Driver repair is the next practical step.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras. On some Windows 10 builds the category is named Imaging devices.
- Look for the integrated Surface camera. On supported Surface hardware, an Intel AVStream camera adapter may be listed. The exact label varies by model.
- If the device has a down-arrow icon, right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If it is enabled but still fails, right-click the camera, choose Uninstall device, and select the option to remove the driver when Windows offers it. Do not remove unrelated display, audio or chipset devices.
- Restart the Surface. Windows will attempt to rediscover the camera and load the appropriate driver.
- Open the Camera app again. If the device does not return to Device Manager, continue to the Surface update and UEFI checks rather than repeatedly uninstalling it.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon or an error code, record the code before making changes. It can help an administrator or service technician distinguish a driver load failure from a disabled device. A camera that never appears in either Cameras or Imaging devices is not merely an app-permission problem.
5. Install updates for the correct Surface model
Run Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install applicable updates, restart when prompted and check again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
Then open the Surface app and use its Help & support area to check for Surface-specific updates. Firmware and driver bundles are model-specific, so verify the model recorded in Settings > System > About before downloading anything manually. Never substitute a Surface Pro 4 package for a Surface Book package, or the reverse.

If the failure started immediately after an update, note the update date and version. Do not assume that rolling back a random driver is safe; first use the matching Surface package and the supported Windows Update path. If an update cannot install, capture its error message and proceed to UEFI and service escalation rather than installing an unrelated package.

Surface UEFI is below Windows, so it can reveal a hardware-level disablement that no privacy switch or Device Manager change will correct. Use it only after saving work and shutting down.

- Exit UEFI, allow Windows to boot and test with the Camera app.
You can also reach UEFI through Windows: Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Surface Book support for UEFI applies across its generations, but the labels and available controls can differ by model. If no camera control is shown, do not change unrelated UEFI settings.

7. Perform a proper Surface force restart
Waking from sleep, closing the lid or choosing a normal restart does not always reset a camera firmware state. Microsoft’s Surface procedure is a shutdown followed by a sustained power-button press:
- Choose Start > Power > Shut down.
- Wait until the screen is completely off, then wait a little longer for the device to finish powering down.
- Press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds.
- If the Surface logo appears during that interval, continue holding until the full 20 seconds has elapsed and the logo appears again.
- Release the button, let Windows start normally and test the Camera app before launching other programs.
This procedure is not a factory reset and does not erase personal files. It is intended to reset the hardware state after ordinary software troubleshooting has completed.
8. Decide when the problem needs service
If permissions are enabled, the Camera app fails, competing processes and security policy are ruled out, the camera has been reinstalled, the correct Surface updates are installed, UEFI shows no disablement and a force restart changes nothing, software repair may be exhausted. Use Microsoft’s service-order process or an authorized service provider where available. Regional availability, warranty status and commercial terms vary, so check the options offered for your location and exact model.
A practical temporary fallback is a UVC-compatible USB webcam. Most USB webcams use Windows’ in-box USB Video Class driver. Connect the webcam, allow Windows to detect it, then in the affected application choose the external camera. If Windows presents a choice between a manufacturer device and USB Video Device, select the USB Video Device entry for a standard UVC webcam. This workaround supplies a separate camera; it does not repair the Surface’s built-in camera.
Windows 10 support status matters in 2026
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Surface can continue running Windows 10, but Windows Update no longer provides the normal free software updates, technical assistance or security fixes that were available before that date. When deciding whether to keep troubleshooting an older Surface, include its Windows-support status and hardware eligibility for a supported Windows release in your longer-term plan. That status does not change the permission, Device Manager or UEFI steps above; it affects future maintenance and security.
