Palworld’s Sakurajima update launched on June 27, 2024. Pocketpair described it as the game’s first major update and a free update, adding a new island, Pals and skills, tougher tower encounters, multiplayer combat, an oil-rig stronghold, and more building options.
When did the Sakurajima update come out?
Sakurajima began rolling out on June 27, 2024. Pocketpair’s launch announcement called it Palworld’s first major update and described it as free. That date is the update’s original release, not a new 2026 launch.
At launch, Pocketpair listed Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One as Palworld platforms in its June 28 announcement. Those are launch-era platform details, not a definitive list of current storefront availability.
What does the Sakurajima update add?
A new island to explore
The namesake island is the update’s central addition. Pocketpair describes a Japanese-inspired region with a shrine, a strange swamp ringed by large mushrooms, a Japanese-style dungeon, and a cemetery. The company’s announcement says the island is home to many new species of Pals.

New Pals, variants, and skills
The update adds new Pal species, variants of existing Pals, and many new skills. That gives players new creatures and abilities to discover alongside the island’s exploration and combat content.
The Moonflowers faction and harder tower fights
Sakurajima introduces the Moonflowers faction and hard modes for tower leaders. It also raises the level limits for players and Pals, supporting further progression for players taking on the tougher encounters.

A player-versus-player arena
An arena in the Desiccated Desert adds player-versus-player battles. It is a competitive multiplayer feature; it should not be read as a single-player arena activity.
A Rayne Syndicate oil rig
The Rayne Syndicate-controlled oil rig is a large combat stronghold built around a fight for valuable resources. It also introduces crude oil as a resource, giving players a reason to take on the encounter beyond clearing its enemies.

More base-building and resource options
The update adjusts building limits and the number of bases players can have. New additions include pillars, glass building pieces, sulfur mines, and coal mines, expanding both construction choices and resource gathering.

Yes, Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 server guide describes dedicated and community servers, and lists Xbox Series and Microsoft Store Windows PC among the platforms in its cross-play section. It says Xbox players need to use a community server to join; the guide does not say that Xbox players can join dedicated servers directly. Its cross-play guidance also lists Steam and macOS, says co-op cross-play is available, and notes that PS5 cross-play is currently unavailable.

These details come from Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 server guide. They are separate from Xbox Wire’s June 2024 announcement of dedicated-server access in the Xbox Update Preview for Xbox and Windows, which described that preview at the time rather than all present-day server support.
Dedicated server or community server?
- Dedicated server: Runs independently of a player’s game client, so the world does not depend on its host staying in-game. Platform eligibility and setup requirements depend on Pocketpair’s current guidance.
- Community server: Appears in the in-game server browser. Pocketpair’s guide says Xbox and PS5 players need a community server to join.
Pocketpair’s guide explains server types and joining, but does not establish provider pricing, service performance, or player-capacity comparisons.
