What is Paper Boy S3?
Paper Boy S3 is a build project rather than a finished handheld being sold as a product. It uses the M5Stack PaperS3, a development kit reported to have a 4.7-inch, 960 × 540 E Ink touchscreen and an ESP32-S3 microcontroller. Notebookcheck and CNX Software describe the hardware and project.

The software uses CrankBoy, an open-source emulator originally made for Playdate. Its display technique updates changed pixels rather than refreshing the entire E Ink screen, and the Game Boy image occupies a 160 × 144-pixel area scaled on the larger display. CNX Software reports that the PaperS3’s raw row-and-column display interface lets the project bypass the usual waveform approach.

CNX Software reports performance of 30–60 FPS for most games, with results varying by title. It describes Tetris as especially demanding and Super Mario Land as reaching the highest frame rate. These are figures reported in coverage of the project, not independent benchmark results. The headline’s 30 FPS phrasing therefore understates the reported range and should not be read as a fixed rate for every game.

How do you control it?
The touchscreen provides simulated Game Boy buttons, and the reports also mention Bluetooth gamepad support. Compatibility is described as limited; TechSpot notes that controller responsiveness and accuracy still need work. The available coverage documents neither a physical NES-controller dock nor a tested setup using one. Notebookcheck, CNX Software and TechSpot describe the reported controls.
Can you buy one or build it now?
Notebookcheck says Paper Boy S3 is not commercially available; project data is available through GitLab for people who have the relevant development kit. The PaperS3 itself is reported as discontinued and difficult to find, and current retail stock has not been established. Notebookcheck, CNX Software and Tom’s Hardware report the availability constraints.

CNX mentions the older M5Paper as a related board, but it uses an ESP32 rather than an ESP32-S3 and would require further modifications. It is not established as a direct substitute for the PaperS3 build. This project is best understood as an E Ink emulation experiment for people who already have compatible hardware, not an easy-to-buy alternative to a ready-made handheld.
