Party Versus is a mixed-reality party game for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S that blends mini-games with the room around you. Schell Games launched it on December 17, 2024, then announced on June 10, 2025 that it was free to play on those headsets. The launch and the later pricing change are separate events.
What is Party Versus?
Schell Games describes Party Versus as a social mixed-reality game made with Oculus Publishing and built in Unity. Rather than replacing your view of the room with a fully virtual setting, it uses headset passthrough to keep your surroundings visible and bring parts of that space into the game.
According to Schell’s FAQ, the headset cameras map the room and align players’ physical floors and walls to create an expanded shared-room effect. The result is a party game designed around the space players are actually in, with collaborative and competitive mini-games for families and casual players.
How do its mini-games and party modes work?
The December 2024 launch announcement advertised more than a dozen mini-games. Named examples include Hot Potato, Spike Attack and Pop Pals. Schell also lists Party Playoffs and Quick Party, private and public party options, earnable party favors, and Twisted modes that can invert the view. The mix of cooperative and competitive activities gives groups different ways to play, while the room-aware presentation is a defining part of the experience. The launch announcement describes games that integrate the playspace, rather than simply placing a conventional virtual party game in front of the player.

What hardware do you need to play it?
Schell’s launch announcement lists Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S as supported launch devices. The developer says the game is best experienced on hardware with high-fidelity color passthrough, naming Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro as examples. The sources establish Quest 3S as a launch platform, while Schell’s best-experience guidance specifically names Quest 3 and Quest Pro.
If you already own a compatible headset, you do not need another one just to play. If you are choosing hardware, consider how much room-aware color passthrough matters to your intended use; Quest 3S is one of the supported options, but the game alone is not a reason everyone should buy a headset.

What makes the game different from a standard VR party game?
Its central distinction is mixed-reality play tied to players’ physical surroundings: passthrough leaves the room visible, and the game maps physical surfaces to help form a shared play space. For comparing it with another social VR or MR party game, useful questions are which headsets it supports, whether it uses the room itself, how parties are formed, how many people can play, whether activities are cooperative or competitive, and how many mini-games are included. Those are comparison criteria, not a head-to-head performance verdict.
At launch, Schell Games CEO Jesse Schell described the goal as “creating unforgettable game night moments with friends and family” by blending the real and virtual worlds. The quote appeared in GamesBeat’s December 17, 2024 coverage.
